Let us examine our attitude toward peace itself. Too many of us think it is impossible. Too many think it unreal. But that is a dangerous, defeatist belief. It leads to the conclusion that war is inevitable, that mankind is doomed, that we are gripped by forces we cannot control.
We need not accept that view. Our problems are manmade; therefore, they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man’s reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable, and we believe they can do it again.
I am not referring to the absolute, infinite concept of peace and good will of which some fantasies and fanatics dream. I do not deny the value of hopes and dreams, but we merely invite discouragement and incredulity by making that our only and immediate goal.
Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace, based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions, on a series of concrete actions and effective agreements which are in the interest of all concerned. There is no single, simple key to this peace, no grand or magic formula to be adopted by one or two powers. Genuine
In the movie Miss Congeniality, all of the contestants are asked what they wished for. Coincidentally, all of the pageant contestants replied confidently with ¨world peace.” That famous line has now turned into a well-known punchline due to how stereotypical and obvious it is. All joking aside, that is actually what everyone strives for in their lifetime. World peace has unfortunately been absent in past occurrences. For example, blacks were greatly mistreated by many in a harmful and unkind way. Back when slavery was present, kindness was absent. Despite all of the past happenings, hope for a more loving world still has a chance to prosper.
Martin Luther King once said, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only achieved by understanding”. King’s speech talks about a denial of the Nobel Prize until most of the conflict between races are abolished. In his speech, he describes violence is not a key to stop the segregation but to communicate and understand how to live in tranquility. In President Obama’s nobel speech, there is many indistinguishable claims that goes with King’s speech which Obama describes that war won't bring peace because it comes with sacrifices. Consequently, there is evidences that they both thought peace is precious to their own country and the rest of the
The idea of peace in the Middle East has been fought over, discussed, caused physical battles, and political name-calling. The conflict caused by misunderstanding the will of God and the pride of man has been history's leitmotif since the beginning of recorded time. In certain parts of the world, that recurrent theme is more of a constant heartbeat. Since the outbreak of the second intifada, people around the world have witnessed many bloody scenes where people sacrifice their lives for their own justification of peace. Many people had a hard time believing their own eyes when viewing a photo shot of a father trying to protect his son from pouring bullets and another shot of a frightened 12-year-old boy killed as his father tried to
As intelligent and social beings we strive to achieve and maintain conditions that lead to peace at all times, peace is idealized into a social norm that we all expect to cherish and benefit from. This basic belief, that is part of our common sense, is rooted in our religion tradition (Lecture 28; 03/17/2017). Because generally war has a negative meaning and people believe that faith brings peace to the world, they often have a hard time connecting war and religion. However, as ironic as it sounds, the causes and constraints of copious wars in human history are most often directly correlated to religion (Lecture 28; 03/17/2017). War happens due to human behaviors and it can have both positive and negative effects. As war is considered negative
Peace is not something you wish for, it’s something you make, something you are and something you give away - Robert Fulghum
Peace is constant across cultures and history when it is a positive peace, that is when there is not just an absence of violence but also, “. . . peace with justice for all” (positivepeacewarriornetwork.com). Positive peace is constantly working towards a better society, it is a life style and a conversion of a community for a better world. It is arguable that peace of this nature could be universal, in that if everyone is working towards the same goal then the results would, in the end look similar universally. Positive peace is something that would theoretically be a universal idea, something that would transcend borders and communities and, in the end, become part of the world picture. So much of the world today is built off of a war mentality and while it seems impossible for peace to become common place, it is not impossible. Through effort and changing the mentality of war being the only way, it would make peace a plausible and actually sensible solution to violence. This exchange of violence for positive peace would be a process, but it would not be impossible. A worldwide revolution of peace is a plausible and cross-cultural possibility that all should advocate and work
Peace is difficult to find, Peace is an unforgettable adventure that once the goal has been reached it takes time and effort to keep the prize because, in the end, it is worth the fight. In life there will be ups and downs, smooth sailing and storms, good luck and bad luck but it will always depend on the attitude that goes towards life, without a positive attitude, goals will not be achieved and to achieve them peace is always required whether it is with family, with nature, or with faith, peace will always help achieve goals that are set.
“The American experience supported the assumption that peace was the natural condition of humanity, prevented only by countries’ unreasonableness or ill will” (Kissinger, p. 241). The United States, like President Wilson, thought that “international peace required the destruction of every arbitrary power anywhere that can separately, secretly and of its single choice disturb the peace of the world; or, if it cannot be presently destroyed, at the least its reduction to virtual
The law of nature commands that each man be willing to pursue peace when others are willing to do the same, all the while retaining the right to continue to pursue war when others do not pursue peace.
What is peace ? To some it is freedom of disturbance and to others it is the presence of tranquility. To those that study the field of conflict resolution, peace is seen as a concept that can be viewed as either negative or positive. Negative peace is the absence of war while positive peace is the integration of human society (Galtung). Though positive peace is the ideal standard that most would like to hold the world to, it is negative peace that is most present in society. Negative peace though having the benefit of lacking violence can still be detrimental to a society because of lasting effects a conflict could posses. An example that shows how negative peace does not automatically solve inherent problems in a society is the Central
Peace within the world begins with increased communication and resolutions between nations. Countries around the world have issues with each other, declaring war with little effort towards finding simple solutions, with a prime example being the United States of America and North Korea as tensions rise due to the differences between the two. The chances of a nuclear war are also increasing and neither country have a common negotiating ground. Attempting to negotiate a pact that suits both countries demands is the appropriate action to take. Without a common negotiating ground, military action would be seen as the only option to settle the
The modern state’s approach to peace is primarily a justification for militarism and warfare. Examples of this include the proliferation of nuclear capabilities, the “war on terror,” and what time, money, and forces are dedicated to military action compared to peacekeeping missions through the U.N.
Conflict creates strong impulses such as fear and hostility, but due to the disapproval of society, many people have quickly learned to not acknowledge them at all, not even to themselves, when these impulses are involved in a conflict, the person is anxious, but does not know why. They are then less able to bring rational thinking to bear on the problem which in extreme cases can and have lead to war. We frequently experience disagreements with others that are left unresolved or dealt with incorrectly. When in these disagreements we feel we must win the argument at all cost that is when we see the break of warfare, both at a personal level and a global level. Once we abandon the idea of resolving conflict, the inevitably, sooner or later, ignites into something much worse, into battle.Obama’s speech in Hiroshima may create long lasting peace with that country, however, warfare is “engagement in or the activities involved in war or conflict”, and it is hard to imagine the prevention of warfare without conflict when dealing with radical groups such as ISIS. Although it's nice to be optimistic and believe in long lasting peace, the reality is war is
While world peace is theoretically possible, some believe that human nature inherently prevents it.[1][2] This
