The Jungle” is a book by Upton Sinclair. The book mainly focuses on how life was back in the early 1900’s. It really nags at how Social Darwinism works. It does this by telling a fictional story about an immigrant named Jurgis Rudkus and his family, and their experiences in america. Even though Sinclair’s intent of the book was to spread the idea of socialism, when the book came out in 1906 readers were mainly focused at the beginning of the book. How it describes the conditions of the meat packing plant, of how awful it is is. He described it in his book as: unsanitary and they do little effort to clean up the meat. So they made laws and created the FDA to clean things up. Sinclair mostly described in his book how Social Darwinism is bad. He did this by having the main characters either die off or experience a great deal of agony, because of Social Darwinism. Upton Sinclair still did some good for the future generations of America. In the book, from beginning to end most characters are usually bad. Like mentioned before the meat packing plants are unsanitary, but that’s not the only thing awful about them. The employers overwork and under pay their employees. They also place them in harsh working conditions. The rest of the business owner besides this also abuse their employees in one way or another. Towards the climax and end of the book Jurgis meets up with criminals. The only ones mentioned are the thieves and con-artist. The book somewhat explains the criminal's
