In All Quiet on the Western Front, the author paints a realistic and gruesome tale of war. Many people believe that war is a glorious event. The author succeeds to show how gruesome and devastating war actually is. In many books, movies, and TV shows, war is described as glorious and good. War is not glorious or good from the beginning of time people have been at war and from that people have died. War is shown as the thing that gets the girl or the thing that makes people see you as a king and that people come back untouched. That is the false way the Hollywood and others have butchered the reality of war.

During the war, many soldiers may feel as though they are losing their self-identity. Having that one person they can confide in, who share the same troubles, tends to be one of the few things that helps them manage the chaos of battle. Thus, camaraderie is the key to survival during the time of war. Putting extra sensory images into a scene gives the reader more idea of what’s happening “I hear aspirant for the frying pan” (52). Lost generation is the idea of an unfulfilled generation coming to maturity during a period of instability (New Oxford American Dictionary). The idea of lost generation first started with writers such as Ernest Hemmingway after having served time in the war felt a disconnection to his prewar self. In the book, All Quiet on the Western Front, the author Erich Maria Remarque wrote about war and included details that were often kept as a secret. A very prevalent theme in Remarque’s novel is the loss of innocence, which ultimately leads a generation of soldiers to become known as the lost generation. World War One caused a sense of instability and uncertainty in its young men, ultimately leading the soldiers to lose their innocence and questions their sense of self.

While the disconnection allows the soldier to adapt to the brutal war environment, it inhibits them from re-entering society. When he takes his leave, he is unable to feel comfortable at home. Even if Paul had survived the war physically, he most likely would not have integrated back into society suitably. The emotional disconnection inhibits soldiers from mourning their fallen friends and comrades. However, Paul was somewhat less than able to completely detach himself from his feelings, and there are several moments in the when he feels himself pulled down by emotion. These rush of feelings indicate the magnitude to which war has automated Paul to cut himself off from feeling, as when he says, with unbridled understatement, “Parting from my friend Albert Kropp was very hard. But a man gets used to that sort of thing in the army (p. 269) .”

I often see myself looking back at the event where Paul accidently killed his own soldier then had to watch him pass away. The rollercoaster of emotions that Paul undergoes during this scene gives the reader a sort of anxiety and sympathy for Paul. First, Paul wants the man to die and when he does he is then relieved originally. Unfortunately, this feeling of relief does not last long as he later he feels remorse for killing the man. There are thousands of reviews for this deeply moving and heartbreaking book , and I don't know that I could add anything new. It simply broke my heart. However I do strongly feel that I should describe the vivid pictures in my mind when I am reading it .I first time read All Quiet on the Western Front in my first year of university that I took history world war as an elective course.During this re-read, I reflected on not only in appreciation of what soldiers and their families suffer during war, but also for my university’s teachers who spend their days trying to inspire me to have perspective and big Ideas and to think deeply. I remember how meaningful it was to read this book when I was 19, and it helped shape how I think about history
