The skin I’m In is a realistic fiction written by Sharon G. Flake. This was her first novel and was originally published by Hyperion in 1998. It tells the story of a seventh grader named Maleeka Madison who is teased by her classmates due to her dark skin color. It is written in first person point of view from the perspective of Maleeka. There were some reasons that caused me to choose this novel. Its plot was very unique compared to other books I’ve read which are mostly adventure and many others. Its setting is quite modern since it took place in the early 1990s, making it more relatable to the readers.
The Skin I’m In is very well written for a debut novel. I quite enjoyed the novel because of its interesting plot, It also talks about
The book takes a lot of perspectives mainly among Aries, Clementine, Michael and mason. This is really good compared to other books. The multiple perspective makes it feel like a movie and mixes it up. Also, it has an abundance of suspenseful cliff-hangers that make you crave to read more and lead you on. The characters also aren’t afraid all the time and cower how most teens would. They seem to know how to live in the moment, and have good times and joke even when there is danger. That shows us they are fearless kids just about.
You don't find this type of historical book interesting very often, but this one was. Everyone who I know has read or is currently reading it agrees. Learning and discovering different perspectives and stories that are sad but exciting are what made me continue reading this book. I never got bored of the book. There was never a dull moment. Somewhere in a span of 2 pages, there would be a problem, or something bad would happen. It kind of felt like a mystery to me. I would try and think, with all the things that have happened are they going to make it to their destination. Are they going to get to Florida, Greece, or Cuba? Also, now knowing in detail what people in the 1900’s and now are facing makes me feel educated in a way, which I like. Reading what sacrifices these characters and their families had to do to survive really moved me in a way a book hasn't done to
I really enjoyed the book because I love reading very interesting and right at the
I loved this book so much. There is so much action and is so much better and exciting with so much amazing detail and description. This is one of my favorite books ever. When you read it, you don’t want to put it down and it makes you feel like you are with the characters in the book and you know them so well. I recommend this book to anyone who can read at this level.
First, as intro says, "If strong ideas and action offend you then read no more.” This quote is very accurate, because in order to enjoy the book you must be willing to accept the opinions expressed and be willing to hear tales of wild adventures. I really enjoyed this book because it was a more mild version of historical fiction. It didn't have many strong references history-it was more of an action-packed story than one about history. Finally, It had a strong main character, Charlotte Doyle. Who is a female; I like that because it showed that girls can be action heroes
For the most part, the novel was very enjoyable. One aspect of it that I loved was that the storyline was extremely intense, which always compelled me to find out what would happen next. For example,
enjoyed the plot of the book. I also chose the book because it was the only book that seemed most interesting.
It captured my attention from the beginning. I like how the Rand was descriptive words to help me have an image of what was happening in the novel. I like the story line. I like the idea of someone breaking way from everyone else and being different from others. That they are able to think for themselves and that it is ok to be different from others. I also liked how the novel had some romance because I do enjoy romance novels. The Language Police written by Diane Ravitch, I did not quit enjoy the book. I do not really like books like that. I do not recommend this book if you are not interested in how the bias panel chooses stories for children. I do recommend the novel, Anthem. It gives the reader a sense of individualism, there is a story behind
For example, I knew slavery was harsh but it is completely different when you read about their daily life and how extreme things were. The book also allowed me to feel connected to Isabelle and to the time period. I liked Isabelle and her determination, so whenever she was hurt I took it personally and felt like it was my friend hurting. The book gave a realistic account of being alive during the Revolutionary War, which I liked. Many people think of the Revolutionary War as being glorious, but it wasn't, People were shot and killed and if you weren't killed immediately you were taken to a prison and starved.
The characters bring a riveting story to life when reading. Throughout the book, I felt emotions left and right for the characters and what they were going through. There is a lot of mystery and questioning that will be answered later in the book, but once its done, there are still many questions being asked. when I look for a book, that is something that stands out to me because I really want to read more, and when you have that reaction to a book, that means it was worth reading. I found this book remarkable because of the behaviors, characteristics, and decisions that the characters make, and I recommend this book to everyone, even if they don’t like to
I really enjoyed the book because from the beginning it started giving background information about the characters, which really helped me see how they became the person we see in the book. Also the book does a wonderful job at painting pictures in your head. One part described the city as “… a ceaseless passage of carriages, trains, and grip cars all with iron clad wheels that struck the pavement like rolling hammers.” With that description I could see the cars and hear the wheels, plus it just helps me understand the book a little better.
What made me choose this book was the title. Looking at the title and reading the back of the book it just seems like something I can relate to. Grewing up the way that I did and seeing the thing that I have I felt like this could be a good book for me. The subject of the book is also something that I would like to learn more about. This being a non fiction book I seen a perfect chance to do actually that. What really made me choose this book was my interest in the title.
I liked the book because i thought their was a lot of detail added into the story also i think that it was kind of neet that their was good characters
I cared about what was going to happen to these characters and even though I saw what was going on through each characters eyes I still questioned which one was truly in the right. This book does start to go into relationships between characters much more than, Legend, using love triangles, relationships that, "would just never work out," and more than one stolen kiss. This was a part of the book that I was expecting, but at first I did not really buy it and it seemed overly complicated and forced at times. Eventually however I got swept up in the crazy relationships and truly cared about who was going to be with who. Overall this book exceeded my expectations and was really interesting to read. Almost every chapter had a "wow" moment that made me keep reading. I wish the author had eased into the love triangles slightly more to make it seem more natural, but it works out in the end.
When I first read the book as a fifteen-year-old girl in the midst of those always tumultuous teenage years, I loved the escape the book gave me. It could take me to a world that, while just as harsh as my own, was something different to explore both in the pages and in my own mind.
