The story starts with the Narrator, an engineer, who is temporarily staying at the Hale house in Starkfield, Massachusetts due to a project in a nearby town. Dealing with a delay in his work, the Narrator decides to observe the citizens of Starkfield. He notices Ethan Frome at the post office and wonders why a man with immense strength seems so physically and mentally crippled. He decides to investigate and finds out that Ethan was a victim of a “smash-up”. The Narrator had been using Denis Eady 's horses to get to Corbury Flats so he could get on the train to the Junction, but when Eady’s horses fall ill, he hires Ethan as a driver. On the way back to Starkfield, the Narrator has no choice but to seek shelter at Ethan’s farmhouse due to a terrible snowstorm. The frame changes to a third person omniscient point of view, and Ethan is going to town to walk Mattie, his wife’s cousin, home from a dance at the church. Her parents both died just a year ago, and she was left with nothing. Due to her father squandering her relatives’ money, Mattie had no one to look to for help. Zeena, Ethan Frome’s wife, decided to take her in, in exchange for her doing the housework and taking care of Zeena. He reminisces about his past annoyance of having to walk Mattie home, however, he now wishes he could walk her home every night. This is due to his ever-growing love towards her. He arrives at the church
Ready Player One hits some of the same situations as in the holocaust or for the book that we read “Night” like taking people spread out over a good area and combining them into a small dense area. They both also touch on the topic of how when someone is killed or something is blown up now one raises an eyebrow or if they do no one does anything about it.
Isolation can be the determining factor in changing one’s mindset. In Ethan Frome, Ethan faces many disappointments throughout the novel. In the novel, Ethan is an orphan since both parents have passed. His wife Zeena who is also his cousin has become the dominant one in the relationship taking over full control. While living in Starkfield, Zeena has suddenly become “sick” and is forced to bring in her cousin Mattie for help around the house. Zeena is depicted as a bitter prematurely old woman who is always “sick” while Mattie is the picture of health as well as the sweetest woman alive. When Mattie comes into the picture, she becomes the speck of happiness in which Ethan longs for but Zeena keeps taking away. This brings up a theme of failure throughout the novel.
Though too intelligent for rural life, Ethan finds himself stuck in an average man's shoes. Leaving any opportunity he had to become someone in life, Ethan moves back to Starkfield to take care of his ailing mother and attend to their farm(Wharton 29). Rather than living a lonesome
Ethan had “taken a year’s course at a technical college at Worcester, and dabbled in the laboratory,” however later ended his schooling because of “his father’s death, and the misfortunes following it” (Wharton 24).His action in giving up his proud studies is an example of what makes Ethan a tragic hero as he feels obligated to pursue his family’s farm instead of following his dreams through college. Not only is he troubled by leaving college for the farm, but Ethan is also unhappy with his relationship with his wife, Zeena. Zeena they were both happy until within a year of their marriage Zeena contracted an alleged illness and she becomes bitter. “He felt a chill of such forebodings,” within Ethan’s diminishing marriage with Zeena as she has become a burden (Wharton 63). Since Ethan is not capable in revealing his feelings about Zeena, it leads to the downfall of Ethan’s miserable relationship with her. than Frome begins to live a life of tragedy that evolves into suffering by the action of unthoughtful

He wishes to be with Mattie, the younger, vivacious niece of Zeena who has been staying with the Fromes to help around their house. Because the death of Mattie’s parents left her penniless and homeless, her extended family saw the opportunity of sending her off to the Frome’s as a way to take care of Zeena’s claims to need help because of her sickness. “Night” is a book based on the childhood of the writer Elie Wiesel and his experience during Nazi-Germany. He writes about his experiences from 1944-1945 the height and downfall of the second World War.
After reading the book “Night” I wanted to know why people try to put others down to make them feel better about themselves. I’m writing this paper because I don’t like that people are stereotypical and racist. This topic doesn’t really interest me, it just makes me curious as to why people are like this. Did something happen to them to make them hate on others? Are they just like that? Reading about the holocaust and how they were treated really made me want to why people treat others like that. In “Night” all the prisoners are treated as if they aren’t human, they’re treated like animals and I don’t know why the officers try to dehumanize them for their race but it is really sad. The prisoners had to run miles after not eating for
One of the most important themes in the book ‘Ethan Frome’ is one way or another you reap what you sow. Many tragedies occur in the life of Ethan Frome time to time and although some are inevitable , other just simply occur because of his actions and mistakes. From the initiation , Ethan was surrounded by illness and in the end of the book he was forced to watch for his wife and wife’s disabled cousin. Nonetheless , Ethan Frome suffered all around for his actions.
In Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome, the main character, Ethan faces many decisions throughout the book that both positively as well as negatively affect those close to him. The most important of these decisions takes place near the end of the book. This decision that Ethan made not only impacted him physically but also mentally for the rest of his life. Soon After Danny’s prayer to St. Jude, He quickly began finding work. Danny Thomas would eventually become one of the biggest stars on the radio, film and television in his day, and even one of the world’s biggest celebrities, and he had St.
Gauging the relaxed, calm posture of the prince, Ramses waved at the empty space in front of him. "Didn't you kill him?"
Today is September 1st, 1939 in Holland. Right now I’m going to be writing a book, it is going to be really good. I wish it would be published so that lots of people could read it and enjoy it. Once I’m finished with my book I will lend a copy to my good friends the Franks. The Franks are, Otto Frank, Edith Frank, Margot Frank, and Anne Frank. So it’s 1:00 in the afternoon and while I was in the middle of writing my book I was interrupted by a loud, BANG! Then there were even more loud noises and I started to think that they were gunshots, so I looked at my window and i saw a Jew laying on the ground dead and next to him was a Nazi with a rifle. I quickly ran over to the Frank’s House to see if they heard the shots and they did. Every single one of us started wondering why they would kill Jews. We knew it was because of Adolf Hitler, he is in control of the Nazis. Everyday now for the past week there has been at least one killing of a Jew. I started to think that we were going to be in a war with the Germans. The next day seven Jews were shot and killed and lots of people were being taken to a place called Concentration Camps. It is a horrible place, they hardly feed you, it is just a complete disaster. The Franks are going into this hideout called the Secret Annex, the Secret Annex is hidden in Otto Frank’s business place. The Secret Annex entrance is covered by a moving bookshelf. Also I have to take care of my family too, my son and my husband. So everyday someone has
Ethan Frome does not abide by the typical societal norm. His face gives off something “bleak and unapproachable,” (Edith Wharton 1). Due to his stiff figure and the scar upon his face, he gives off the persona of a ruined man and as a result no person thought of approaching him. Despite being alienated from his peers, Ethan remains quite sensitive. Furthermore, Ethan’s life at home does not help. His wife Zeena controls him and wants everything to run her way. She falls ill and goes out of her way to spend loads of money on treatments she does not need. Ethan cannot afford what she acquires, and becomes tired of her actions and begins thinking of ending their marriage. However, Ethan meets a girl who makes everything worth living for. Her name is Mattie Silver and she is remarkably beautiful. Mattie is Zeena’s cousin who has been living with the Frome’s after her father died. Ethan sees her as a blessing and longs to be with her. Ethan becomes tired of being controlled by Zeena and spending money on someone who does not deserve his affection. Ethan is crumbling under his marriage while falling in love with the girl of his dreams.
The eerie, soft but low wail of the dark figures around me echoed in the swirling wind as I dug my claws into the frozen soil, staring longingly at the distant wooden house, my sharp, pale yellow eyes barely able to see it through the thick sheet of descending snow.
