What makes a person mature? Does age mean that you're mature? Your life experiences? Maybe by how much you know? The dictionary definition of maturity is "fully developed physically; full-grown" (Dictionary.com) This means that a person has grown all they can and is ready to live on its own. My definition of mature is rational, stable and sophisticated. In the article "The Marks of Maturity" Tim Elmore explains how and why adolescents become mature. He lists many reasons for immaturity, such as societal expectations, and life at home. He also explains that emotional control, brain development, and sophisticated decisions are signs of maturity. First off, Elmore starts his article by stating "this generation of kids is advanced intellectually, but behind emotionally." He explains that society throws information at kids too fast and while the brain files it away, the child is not ready to face it emotionally, which leads to outbursts and unpredictable behavior. This is a reason some teenagers are considered immature. Because of all the expectations that schools, parents and society place on kids at a young age, many teenagers are left emotionally unready for adulthood. Some include emotionally stable, rational and mentally developed. All of these characteristics are equally very important for a person to succeed in their lifetime. Without emotional development, a person's behavior becomes erratic and unpredictable, which is very unattractive and it hinders a teenagers ability to make decisions. Also, mental development is essential because without a fully developed mind, the teenager is not able to aspire to their full potential.
