Teenagers are often seen in society as careless and dangerous in the U.S. society. With many articles on adolescence, this thought stays true. Although, in a basic psychology book the author contradicts this thought. The author of a basic psychology book merely states that peers often coincide with parents on encouraging teens to do well. So, what’s the truth? The best way to answer this is to analyze articles that have strong support for their opinion on adolescence. An article by the name of “Why Teen-Agers Are the Worst” by Elizabeth Kolbert explores the possibilities on why teenagers may be dangerous. Kolbert’s thesis is “At moments of extreme exasperation, parents may think that there’s something wrong with their teen-agers’ brains. The thesis is always the main statement to look at when assessing an article. If the thesis can be proven in some way, the article is a valuable source to use. When assessing Kolbert’s thesis, she is essentially stating that many parents wonder why teenagers are so dangerous until they get older. Secondly, she is stating that many researchers have explored this topic to try to understand the behavior behind teens. All in all, the article was very objective in its goal to assess the behavior behind teens. The only bias that came out of this article, was Kolbert’s stories about her children. She told her audience that her daughter backed into a mailbox prior to her writing about this topic (Kolbert par. 28). She also overgeneralized in thinking that all teenagers will act accordingly to the research found. Or if there was information from the researcher's experiment saying this wouldn’t apply to all teens, she didn’t include it in the article. Furthermore, Kolbert does give new information about teenagers that wasn’t included in the psychology books. She speaks about two
