Globalization, a word that is associated with the development of interactions with various nations and ethnic groups worldwide for the sole purpose of trading and gaining perspective of the needs of others while benefiting substantially from such a system. The word ‘globalization’ is often connected with modern times as in the 20th and 21st century eras of imperialism but actually began around as early as 17th century. Timothy Brook’s Vermeer’s Hat delves into the paintings of Johannes Vermeer by analyzing context clues in the paintings in order to explore how deeply rooted globalization was in the artist’s time as well as its effects of what would eventually become known as a social or global economy. Although the idea of globalization seemed ideal, in retrospect it had many challenges when it came to the various cultural, ethnic, geographic and linguistic differences among those involved as well as transportation and information gathered to achieve a successful trade.
