Analysis: Should People Under The Age Of 18 Be Allowed To Drive?

Imagine your 15 and cant wait until you can drive on your own. The day you get your license you start driving just for the fun of it. Next thing you know your speeding and run right into the car in front of you. I think that 16 year olds shouldn't drive because the problem with them driving is some of them aren't very mature. Their irresponsible behavior can sometimes cost lives. They get excited they can drive on their own and there's usual deadly consequences involved.

On the counterclaim side if the driving age is raised to 18 then it will save young lives.On Average about nine teens ages 16-19 are killed everyday from car wrecks. If it's raised to 18 then there won’t be as many teens ages 16 and 17 killed in car wrecks. A lot of teens lose their lives a year do to car accidents. On average about 6,000 teenagers die a year due from car wrecks. So that's why it might be a good idea. According to( DRIVE-SAFELY.NET) “ A sixteen year old is almost twice as likely to die in a car crash then a 30 year old.”

I understand that individuals want the driving age to be raised. Sixteen-year-olds can be very irresponsible and immature. There are also the safety concerns that can happen, for example, car crashes. However, I believe that the age requirement to drive should stay the same. Teens get the freedom they have been wanting. Teens are able to get jobs to help save up for college. Teens can also learn the responsibilities that come with driving or owning a vehicle. As a result of getting a drivers license, teens don’t have to drive with their parents anymore which can be a big problem. Teens become careless when getting into a vehicle without a parent present. They want to cram in as many people as they can fit, turn up the radio, and have reckless amounts of fun being able to transport themselves for the first time. “The Insurance Institue of Highway Safety conducted endless amounts of research on teen accidents. They found that there is a high crash rate for new younger drivers than older more experienced ones due to their decision making and inexperience” (Lund 28). It has also been recorded that 17 and 18 year olds have also recorded less accidents than newly licensed drivers (Lund 28). Is it really safe to drive a car or be a passenger in one? Does the age of other drivers on the road make it any safer? Some states in the U.S want to raise the minimum driving age from 16 to 18. Albeit many drivers, and passengers alike, may think the minimum driving age should be raised to 18 because of the number of traffic accidents caused by younger drivers, the minimum driving age should remain at 16 because the responsibility of having a car can influence teenagers to be more responsible with other aspects of their lives, teens would not have to rely on their parents for transportation, and it could help adolescents build up experience to improve their driving.

The current driving age of sixteen is implemented in almost every state in the United States. Most states have become accustomed to the current driving age, but recently there are certain states that believe that the legal driving age should be raised due to various reasons. The main argument for most states is that sixteen-year old’s are not mature enough and lack the preparation to handle the responsibility to drive safely. Teenagers under the age of eighteen should be required to wait longer to get their license and should be more prepared before getting their license.

Recently, people have started to become doubtful about the legal driving age being sixteen. They believe that teenagers are immature, childish, indecisive and underdeveloped. People feel that the driving age should be raised to twenty-one so that the society is safer and has more responsible drivers. These people are wrong because teenagers are not as irresponsible as they think. Teenagers need a chance to change others view on them as drivers and become more independent. After turning a certain age, youth do not depend on parents as much anymore and become more independent and self-reliant. Most also believe that teenagers are the cause of many deaths and injuries because of their habit of drinking and driving. Teenagers are not the age group that drink and drive the most. This has been thought to be true for so many years creating false stereotypes about teenagers. It is better to have adolescents learn how to drive so that they are used to driving by the time they are in their twenties and their mistakes are rare, The legal driving age in Canada should not be raised from sixteen to twenty-one giving teenagers a chance to prove their maturity and capability.

For most kids turning sixteen is what they look forward to for years. After countless hours of driver’s education, and driving around with their guardian, they can finely gain some freedom. Receiving a license gives one independence, responsibility, and more opportunities. Therefore; raising the driving age is unfair and ineffective.

With a graduated license, teens will earn the experience they need to become skilled drivers. According to the text, “Studies show that it is inexperience, not age, that causes accidents.” Think about it: could changing the age from 16 to 18 really prevent accidents or just put more inexperienced adults on the roads? Teens make up 7 percent of all drivers, but are involved in 20 percent of all accidents. The reason being is that many teens do not have the road experience necessary to make safe driving decisions.

I agree that the legal Safe Driving age should be at age 18, this is a point in your life where you are growing to become a mature person, it is a time were you can work and you are considered to be independent. At age 18 you have the consciousness that all laws apply to you, so you are aware that all actions have a reaction. The big debate as to whether the legal driving age should be raised to eighteen is an ongoing issue. There are both arguments for and against this matter. Younger drivers, as well as old ones, can cause many life-threatening accidents; therefore, raising the minimum driving age could significantly reduce the number of accidents. The accident rates can be lowered considerably if the legal driving age is bumped up to eighteen. This would mean that no more kids could get hurt or worse, killed in a car accident.

People under the age of 21 should not be able to drive. They are involved in mmore car accidents than older, more experienced adults. In result of irresponsible, careless driving.
