Homework 1: Stono Rebellion When reading multiple perspectives of the same event, the experience is often very eye opening. History told through cloudy judgement, so reading contrasting accounts of the Stono Rebellion was nothing short of interesting. Both perspectives are considerably different; that is true. However, there is important information to be extracted from each of the writings. Because race plays such a significant role in the way this historical event is perceived, both tellings have blaring differences. The account produced by the White man is less sympathetically written. He writes this memo as what seems to be a sort of public announcement to other White people. Using the word “negroe” constantly in reference to the slaves,
Before reading the Willie Lynch letter, my assumption was that he was a black man. Then realizing his last name, “Lynch”, I knew he was white. Although The Willie Lynch’s letter wasn’t a real letter made centuries ago and it was made based off todays time, it gives a clear view of how black people are controlled today. In Lynch’s letter he gives advice to his people about how to control black people. The number one thing that caught my attention was when he began to list off the methods of controlling slaves, and blacks.
The black slaves resisted and tried to run away they wouldn’t give up. Even though there was laws in trying to stop the blacks from running away, they still ran away. There were laws made that if anyone were to find black slave they should do to them what they feel be appropriate. Man slaves were killed or burnt in the book there was a case were a black slave was burnt in a slow fire for 8-10 hours. In some cases both white and black slaves ran way together but the punishment wouldn’t be the same white would only extend there period of serving as slaves and the black salves were hanged or killed. Even then they could see racism how the whites that committed the same crime would get treated differently then the black slaves. The black salves couldn’t do anything besides being slaves, so thought the white people. Even the white servants were treated different, not only were they working for a set period of time, but they were treated as humans and they had rights, and would receive land and pay at the end of their term. The white people justified their own slave trade because in Africa slavery existed too. This was
“These words sank deep into my heart, stirred up sentiments within that lay slumbering, and called into existence an entirely new train of thought. It was a new and special revelation, explaining dark mysterious things, with which my youthful understanding had struggled, but struggled in vain. I now understood what had been to me a most perplexing difficulty – to wit, the white man’s power to enslave black men. It was a grand achievement, and I prized it highly. From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom” (20).
This is hypocritical in that the white men make these values and traditions a staple of their lives, yet when it comes to slaves, they seem to go away. He also believes that, though he will use “the severest language”(Douglass) he can, he firmly believes that “not one word shall escape me that any man whose… not blinded by prejudice, or… a slave-holder, shall not confess to be right and just”(Douglass). So he sincerely believes that the average human being also knows that the treatment of slaves is unjust and unethical, but they choose not to act on these thoughts. His view, coming from the eyes and thoughts of slaves across America, show how hypocritical the nation actually is in both one sided values and not acting upon their knowledge that what is going on is wrong.
The Willie Lynch Letter: The Making of a Slave was a document that was presented by a white slave owner William Lynch on the bank of the James River in 1712. This document was written to establish how they can keep the African Slaves enslaved for at least 300 years. William Lynch had foolproof plan to keep the Africans in what we call today the “slave mentality”. His main goal was to turn the slaves against one another. Even today the powerful speech still enslaves black people and turns us against our brothers and sisters
Throughout Douglass's autobiography, he described what slavery does to white people. The stories he told are true yet so inconceivable that many readers were shocked how
The conditions for slaves in the 1730’s were abhorrent. Slaves were not seen as people and had little to no basic human rights. The Africans brought in for slavery were treated like cattle, and were herded towards farms and plantations where they would spend the rest of their days working for their owners. Slaves could not travel, meet in groups, grow their own food, or hunt game. If they wanted to participate in any of these activities they had to do them in secret. The slaves became tired of being mistreated by the white southern slave owners, which eventually led them to start uprisings and rebellions like the Stono Rebellion.
Writing in the favor of black people has always remained controversial from the very beginning. Critics regard such writing as “a highly conventionalized genre” indicating that “its status as literature was long disputed but the literary merits of its most famous example such as Frederick Douglass 's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass…are widely recognized today.” (Ryan:537) Despite of such severe resistance, writers like Douglass have penned down their autobiography to present the misery of their fellow beings.
“The Book of Negroes is a master piece, daring and impressive in its geographic, historical and human reach, convincing in its narrative art and detail, necessary for imagining the real beyond the traces left by history.” I completely agree with The Globe and Mail’s interpretation of this story. One could almost see the desolate conditions of the slave boats and feel the pain of every person brought into slavery. Lawrence Hill created a compelling story that depicts the hard ships, emotional turmoil and bravery when he wrote The Book of Negroes.
White over Black: American attitudes toward Negro 1550-1812 is a book written by Winthrop D. Jordan, who was a historian in the subject of the history of slavery in the Americas.
Although some white people liked slaves, they shouldn’t have had slavery at all. One should consider the life , liberty and happiness. At one point in Douglass life he finally had gotten enough confidence to escape. He said in chapter eleven on page 59, “Finally come to the point of life during which I planned and succeeded in making my escape from slavery.” He had made a plan but he wasn’t going to state or tell every detail of his plan.
As well as this, sources B is also quite useful as it was written in a diary. Consequently , it is likely to be the slaves true thoughts as he probably didn't intend for anyone else to see it so he can be honest and
Kevin Sieff and Northrup try to show in both articles that neither black or white, iniquity is not alright. In both articles they each have unique ways of displaying racial discrimination. In the articles they’re diverse in many ways; furthermore there is a great deal of alikeness between , “Time Machine (1846): A slave auction in New Orleans,” and “An African country reckons with its history of selling slaves”.
In the world, The Known World, The one who determines right from wrong is the white men society. The law also run by white folk. They can do whatever they want to the slaves, as long as they don’t offense the owner of the slave.
In the first article, in line 51, it shows that due to the slavery system, African-Americans’ status are not totally equal even in today, they are on the lowest economic ladder, where they suffered a lot from the poverty. In the second article, according to the announcement of Roger Taney, the Supreme Court Chief Justice, “blacks have no rights which white man was bound to respect” (L.49), which shows different rules have been applied to different groups of people, there is nothing called justice. Besides, the blacks are linked with the weak and prisoners who should be inferior, while the whites are linked with the strong and keeper who deserve more
