Design Analysis Essay

In this essay I am going to analyse the movie poster for the film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean : The Curse of the Black Pearl’ . This film was released in 2003 directed by Gore Verbinski and it was a huge Box-Office hit and had great reviews . It also made Johnny Depp the superstar he is now and it stars other actors such as Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley . The genre of the film is an action adventure film with lots of other elements in it .
As we can see the main colors used in the poster are Gold and Red which fits with the theme of the movie which is about different pirates . The gold color can refer to golds and jewels that pirates in the movie are after it and the red color

Based on the skull it seems that he must be a villain as the skull is symbol of death and the way he looks is quite different than the others in the poster. On the other hand , on the left side we can see a young male and female which clearly tell the audience that there will be some sort of romance between the two and based on the way they looks it attracts a lot of audience to watch the movie . (Javed, 2011)
In the Middle of the poster we can see the name of the movie written in black font with unique font and gold background . Under that there is subtitle of the movie written with much lesser size font , but the most interesting thing we can see is the unique skeleton pirate with two daggers behind it which is the symbol of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and is also used in posters of the sequels of this film .
Under the name of the movie , we can see few ships on fire which once again gives away the genre of the film which is an action adventure and it also shows that in the movie there will be a lot of ship battles and destruction . On the left side we can see a lot of skulls and jewels in gold color . They specifically used gold color to let the audience know that they are gold and not normal skeleton . Based on this we can assume that some part of the movie will be pirates going after the golds and battling each other for finding the map of the hidden chests
I think the artist is able to communicate the bad condition of the ship and its crew is in. The mood of the work is scary and gloomy. The design and intensity of the waves, the changing weather, and the ships in the ocean seem to make the scene come alive. It really conveys a since of naturalism in the painting the way it depicts the environment around the ship.
First, the swastika symbol which to me represents the time Hitler took over who was a Nazi. Second, the skull and crossbones when I see that in this particular poster I think of death. Thirdly, the little boy who has blonde hair and blue eyes. Now during World War 2 when Hitler was in power he was out to make the master race which include blonde hair and blue eyes. So the little boy would have lasted a long time during the war. And the fourth thing I notice is the scene in the background. The scene in the background looks to me like a war zone with the fire in the right-hand corner and or the buildings that had fallen to the ground.
2. The poster has both denotation and connotation signs. The movie title is on the top part of the movie poster in black and white. This indicates a big plot of the movie where white people ‘get’ into the black people’s bodies and black people are ‘out’ of control of their bodies. Underneath the title, there are some sentences saying, “Just because you are invited, doesn’t mean you are welcome.” This explains
This poster represents the similarities between the movie Gattaca and the book the Chrysalids. In both stories the setting takes place in a distant dystopian future. Also both stories show the different types of dystopian futures. In Gattaca it shows a future ruled by order and in chrysalids it shows a future ruled by chaos, I showed this by drawing a clean city and a destroyed city.
The movie poster that I have chosen is Maleficent, produced by Walt Disney and is released in year 2014. Movie poster is very important as it is considered as an advertisement for a particular movie. With containing the powerful visual elements of the movie such as the famous actors, movie title and attractive image, it can easily grab the audience’s attention. Some of the movie posters may include the main actor’s name as well. These visuals are vital to convey impactful messages to the audience and persuade them to watch. Maleficent is an example of using actress’s name to attract audience. The main actress name, Angelina Jolie is written in an elegant and simple black capital letters in serif typeface and is placed in upper part of the poster.
In the movie, The Shining, Stanley Kubrick uses shades of red and blue to symbolize innocence and perniciousness. In the beginning of the film, the owner of the Overlook Hotel wears a dark blue jacket with a deep crimson tie as he informs Jack Torrance of the macabre past of the hotel. In the following scene, Wendy Torrance, Jack’s wife, wears a bright, colorful blue dress with a vibrant red shirt and socks while discussing the positive side of Jack’s outbreak against his son. Similar to Kubrick’s use of color in The Shining (AdvSC), F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the colors yellow and gold to symbolize new and old money. Both authors use similar, but different colors as a symbol to display the relationships between both themes. Gold represents old
By making the words seem inconsequential in comparison to the image the artist immediately gave the words more power. Once noticed the revealing words explain the image and allow for the mind to wander to all of the battlefields it has heard of. The natural toned background split down the middle also plays a role by giving clear lines of separation between the gun and the megaphone. Even the color scheme plays a role, on the side with the gun the background is an unappealing yellowy-green, while the side with the megaphone has a nicer calming silver background. These choices allow for the reader to, even without the text, decipher the meaning of the ad.
Another major thing you look at when analyzing a poster is its ethos, pathos, and logos. This poster does a good job of appealing to all of these. Its ethos or in other words its credibility is shown in the fine print at the bottom and right above the main title. Above the main title you at the bottom of the poster you see Disney, which is a very credible company that is known for making very good movies that tend to appeal to the modern generation. When you look at the fine print at the very bottom you can make out a few of the actors names and the names of people who helped produce the movie. Most
Being one of the world’s most popular art forms, it was inevitable that these archetypes would find their way into film as well. In this essay I will argue that the
The poster itself is mostly three colors: the blue of the sea, Moana’s red clothing, and the white text. Focusing on the background of the poster, the blue is significant in itself. Blue is heavily considered to be a male color, which can be seen as early as birth when babies are wrapped either a pink or blue blanket depending on their sex. The blue in the poster also goes back to the oar in Moana’s hand. Like mentioned earlier, vigorous water sports are typically
Pirates of the Caribbean was the first film of Pirates. The whole movie was about Pirates, their lifestyle such as stealing a boat from other people which were shown in the movie when Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) stole a boat from the British people. Other fascinating facts which I found about pirates were shown in the movie when they showed a couple of punishments for pirates who committed crimes and of course the myth of mermaids which for me was inaccurate. This movie was released in 2003 and was directed by Gore Verbinski.
I had seen Drew Struzan’s artwork my entire life without ever realizing it. The iconic movie posters, that commonly are displayed on the front of the movie cover, are easily recognized by most Americans. Classic movies, such as Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Harry Potter, Hook, and Star Wars have all had their covers graced by the iconic art of Drew Struzan. I was struck in awe as I came to the realization that someone had actually drawn all of these realistic images that had been a part of my entire life. I had never thought about who made all of the drawings to fill up promotional posters, or even who may have designed the movie itself. As I watched clips of him drawing the posters, I was amazed at his ability to bring the characters
The principles used in this design include figure/ground relationship, asymmetrical contrast and repetition. Out of all these principles, contrast and repetition stands out most. In this work, there is contrast and repetition in colors. Color changed as it has moved one triangle to another. In addition, rhythm and repetition played important part in this design because the geometric shapes repeated more than once. Furthermore, there is also contrast in the size of the type and triangles. For instance, the title "The 2010 Shepley Bulfinch Summer Design Fellowship MMX" used bigger in size than other text. In this work, the figure/ground is well-balanced as well as positive and negative space. These triangles in primary colors and secondary colors are considered as figure and the white part in each rectangle considered as ground. The primary focal points are the triangle in red, blue and yellow. Then the secondary focal point is the triangle that colored in purple and light orange. At last, the tertiary focal point is the texts and the white background of the poster.
This painting is divided into three equal parts by the arches in the background and the characters correspond to each of these arches (TV12). The father is in the middle portion of the painting. The lines of perspective created by the tiled floor, draws our attention to the swords that the father is holding and the vanishing point lies just behind the handles of the sword. Our angle of vision is such that we are looking directly at the main figures groups, particularly the father. A single light source from the left of the picture illuminates the characters and also focuses our attention to the father holding the sword. This creates a ‘theatrical’ effect. The background is simple and stark so our attention is focussed on the figure groups in the painting. The painting has a wide tonal range that makes the composition logical and balanced. The colours used in this
A well-known phrase in the English language is, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This catchy slogan is commonly used to convey emotion, individuality, and personality in an image. In the film industry, creating movie posters will indefinitely be a part of the phrase above. According to Alexander (2011), “a movies poster encompasses the message and feeling of the film, it should be the main source of attention for the release of a new movie” (n.p.). For this project I chose the genre, Drama. Within this genre, I chose three movies that are very diverse to analyze. The movies that I chose were, Holes, Gone Girl, and The Shawshank Redemption.
