The film Patton, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, is about a WW2 General who goes by that name and his various campaigns against the German’s. Though he does run into obstacles, one of which is his mouth. He starts by taking control of the 2nd Corps in Africa, after the Battle of Kasserine Pass. He then makes his way to Sicily and then to Europe. Patton is portrayed as a very capable General, similar to that of his real life counterpart. I was surprised to learn how closely the movie was with it’s characters, in personality, acting, and looks. The performance of George C. Scott fit the character fierceness and overall determined nature, and never faltering to show the softer moments while staying within the character. It’s no wonder he was
The film The War Room is a documentary about Bill Clinton that has very little to do with Bill Clinton himself. The primary focus of the film is devoted to the team of campaign strategists that got Clinton to the presidency. The two main players the film focuses on are James Carville--the Lead Strategist for the Clinton campaign and George Stephanopoulos the Communications Director. The film follows them and their team of campaign strategists and experts as they try to get Arkansas Governor, Bill Clinton, to the presidency. The documentary highlights many key moments in Clinton’s campaign, for example the Gennifer Flowers scandal. However, the film showcases what was happening behind closed doors in the War Room, where Clinton’s
As time goes on, history has a way of getting distorted from its most truthful form. Time causes people to drift away from accuracy and become more interested in what they want to remember. Hollywood has a reputation of creating films that cater more to the average viewer, rather than the history buff. Inglorious Basterds, by Quentin Taratino, take very liberal liberty with a history story, and creates a story that will sell to the crowd. This may seem dubious, but it is often not such a bad thing. Hollywood can take a story that may have one connotation, may it be serious or dreary, and turn it into something that evokes different emotions, will still addressing historical issues or topics. Taratino chooses to film a movie of this type
The Patriot. A person who is willing to fight for their country against enemies. The Patriot begins in the year 1776 in the colony of South Carolina. Mel Gibson plays a planation farmer who fought in the French-Indian war named Benjamin Martin. A War was about to begin and Benjamin wanted no share partaking in the soon-to-be American Revolutionary War. He was more concerned about his two eldest sons who wanted to fight under General George Washington. The beginning of the movie starts out with Benjamin Martin peacefully living with his kids whom no longer have a living mother. Benjamin’s oldest son, Gabriel, joins the war without permission from his father. As the rest of the family are at home one afternoon, Colonel William Travington burns the Martin Plantation to the ground and his second oldest son was killed immediately for interrupting Travington’s plan. Benjamin finds a way to seek revenge because of the rage he experiences after his family is hurt. He begins to realize that he needs to fight for his children and he will not do it alone. Both Benjamin and his oldest son, Gabriel, decide to join the militia as a way of showing what they are capable of. Throughout the film, Benjamin Martin becomes a soldier whom others respect and admire. He shows the militia what it means to truly care for not only his men, but also for his family. As the film progresses, a turn of events take place that show Benjamin’s continued want of revenge against General Charles Cornwallis. The Continentals and the militia soon commence the battle at Cowpens. This is when Benjamin Martin meets his enemy, Travington, who murdered his two eldest sons. After a drawn-out battle, Benjamin stabs Travington in the neck and kills him for the sake of his children. It is then that General Cornwallis retreats his forces and the rest celebrate. Even though some portions of The Patriot aren’t as accurate as we perceive, it is a film full of war and despair, but also a film that contributes to the importance of dignity and the love for one’s family.
The narrative of Davis’s monograph and Vigne’s movie has similarities and differences as well. For example, the return of Martin Guerre after eight years to the court in the neck of time is basically the same in both works, but the starting point is different in terms of time and place. The book starts with a detailed background of Martin’s family, their journey from the Basque region to Artigat, and how they adopt the life of the new place by changing their names, changing their customs, and learning the language so that they become like the villagers. On the other hand, the film begins with villages of Artigat and soon with the marriage of Martin and Bertrande in order to capture audience’s attention to be engaged in watching the film. However, the movie’s director ignores all the background of the Martin’s family.
For my history assignment, I viewed the movie, Sergeant York. Sergeant York is a film about the life of Alvin York. Alvin York is one of the most decorated American soldiers of the World War 1 (Birdwell, M., Dr. (n.d.). It was released on July 2, 1941. This film was directed by Howard Hawks starring Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, and Joan Leslie. This film has been nominated for many awards and has been ranked 57th out of 100 for the most inspirational American movies (Sergeant York, n.d.). This movie is a great portrayal of Alvin York.
Die Hard, a film directed by John McTiernan, successfully utilized several aesthetics, which offered viewers various meanings throughout the duration of the film. Although the diverse meanings grasped by viewers may differ, it was clear to me that McTiernan effectively applied elements of cinematography and mise-en-scene that resulted in viewers being allowed to interpret a range of different meanings or functions of the elements.
In the short film, “The Negro Soldier,” the whole focus was to get African Americans to join the military. With the use of propaganda, the U.S. government hoped to promote getting African Americans to want to fight for their country. It hoped to instill patriotism in them. It showed that Germany and the Nazis had no respect for them and considered them the scum of the earth. It also portrayed them being accepted as equals into the American society. It was used to make them think they were wanted and play a major role in the success of the war against germany. And to ultimately make Germany and the Nazis look like the bad guys (destroying their monuments) instead of the racist America they lived in. It also portrayed African American soldiers prior contributions in previously fought wars as pivotal moments in American history. It made it seem like they were the reason for those victories. It also explained how the African American soldiers were honored with tributes, memorials, medals and parades for their service in the military. In the ongoing WWII, it was said that there were three times the number of African Americans soldiers in WWII than in WWI. Also, many more were getting commissioned and attending West Point and OCS (Officer Candidate School). African American men that were once printers, tailors, entertainers are now soldiers in the Army as gunners, tankers, radio operators, mechanics, quartermasters, and infantrymen. They were now the backbone of
The film showed me a lot about the horrors of the war. It was a very hard and long war.
I watched this movie with my grandpa, who served in the Air Force for over 20 years. He didn’t fight in World War II, but he did see action in Vietnam. In one of the early scenes of the film, when Patton begins wearing his three star general stripes before his promotion is official, my grandfather remarked “Patton was one arrogant S.O.B.” He knows more about the man than I do, and he thinks it is an accurate portrayal and a good film. In this case, I agree with my grandpa.
Background Patton is a film written by Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H North and directed by Franklin J Schaffner (IMDB). This film was made in 1970 and the screenplay was based on the biography, Patton: Ordeal and Triumph and A Soldier’s Story (IMDB). The film’s primary focus is the professional life of general George Patton through his commanding positions in World War II. Patton was a unique character who often had a polarizing effect on people. You either love or hate Patton and throughout the film the writers did a good job of expressing Patton’s persona while allowing the viewer to decide how to receive him.
In the film Platoon by Oliver Stone, we were shown many things the soldiers of the Vietnam War did and things that had happened to them. Some of the soldiers made very poor choices during the war and that was mostly because of the time they were in. They were in the post-war era, they just didn’t know who to trust and so many of them did things that now they would probably regret. The post-war era consisted of a time of drug use, heartless killing, and betrayal.
“The Patriot”, there is a farmer named Benjamin Martin that had previously fought in the French and Indian War, and he has 7 children, and his wife deceased 3 years ago. His oldest son, Gabriel wants to enlist in the army when South Carolina decided to join the Continental Army. So, Gabriel enlists without his father’s permission. Benjamin had caught his 2nd oldest, Thomas one night with a British uniform on, so he had thoughts about joining the army in 2 years (when he is of age). One night after Gabriel enlists, there is someone that jaunted into Benjamin’s house, and it was his wounded son. South Carolina perceived this as treason, and thought that Gabriel's was deserting his army. They were going to hang him, but as walking away, Thomas
“Charlie Wilson’s War” directed by Mike Nicholas is based on a true story of the early 1980s. This politically themed movie was released in the year 2007. The main components of the movie are politics, stubborn politicians, national leaders, war, international policies, national security and most importantly, funds. The movie depicts how funds are gathered through which Afghanis people acquired the weapons and required training to fight against the Russians. It is a story of a liberal democrat, a beautiful socialite, and a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent, who made a pact to conquer the Russians in the Afghanistan. The main characters were played by Tom Hanks as a Congressperson Charlie Wilson, Julia Roberts as Texas socialite Joanne Herring and Philip Seymour Hoffman as CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos. All three of them played an extraordinary role in shaping the history of Afghanistan.
World War II lasted from September 1939 until May 1945 and killed over 70 million people. The war was made up by two sides: the Allies and the Axis. The Allied side included the UK and the US while the Axis side was mainly made up by Germany, Italy, and Japan, however, a total of 61 countries were involved in the war. The beginning of the war is indicated by Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Fury, directed by David Ayer, is a movie about five American soldiers fighting in World War II from inside their tank, which they had named Fury. Fury is based on true events that occurred during the war. Although many Hollywood movies claim to do this, Fury does an excellent job at depicting what war is really like. Not only does the movie show the gruesomeness of being in combat, but it also shows the mental aspects of war. For example, it shows how hard it is for soldiers to see hundreds men being killed every single day. The soldiers are also told not to get to close with anyone because they know how hard it can be if someone you are close to is killed. The soldiers are also shown as very dirty and grimy from fighting everyday in the dirt and mud. This movie does a phenomenal job at using every little detail to depict the life of a soldier serving in WWII.
The blockbuster movie Forrest Gump was made in the year 1994, and it was anAmerican comedy-drama film that won multiple awards and nominations, includingawards won from the 67th Academy Awards, 1995 Golden Globe Awards, 1995 MTVMovie Awards, 1995 Peoples Choice Awards, 2005 American Film Institute Awards andvarious other ones. It was an adaption of a novel of the same name, by Winston Groom.Robert Zemeckis was the director of the movie, and he made great decisions about thecamera techniques to be used in each scene. In 1996, a restaurant with the name Bubba Gump was open in honor of the movie, and surprisingly there is one in the peak Galleria in Hong Kong! The opening scene of the movie is filmed very beautifully, especially with thefeather floating in the air, because it creates the mood of the whole piece. Also, the music and sounds were chosen to accompany the opening scene, contributes to the tone of the entire movie. From right the beginning of the film, the feather is already floating around in theair. This white feather is a symbolic object that counts as a sign. The whiteness of it seems to show the purity and innocence Forrest has, and his enthusiastic personality, where he is determined to do whatever it takes to fulfill his own, and his friends and families dreams. It also seems to symbolize the famous quote that his mom always said, Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get. With thefeather floating to random places, e.g. on top of cars, on peoples shoulders, on thefloor It shows how random life can be, and how no one ever knows what lies in theirpath of life, what obstacles they will have to overcome, and what their destiny is.A very interesting effect the feather is shot from in the opening scene is that it is extreme long shot of different parts of the town, allowing the audience to adapt the setting of the film into their minds, whilst the feather is shot from multiple angles, sometimes close up, and sometimes using medium shots. With the words and the town background, the feather interestingly is still the focal point of the whole shot, and unintentionally, your eyes follow wherever it is going even when the background is changed drastically. When the feather is shot
