Andreas Capellanus’s book, De Amor (about love), written sometime between 1186-1190, is a book many contemporary historians use to delineate their understanding of courtly love and its prominence during medieval times. In the articles titled, “The Courtly Model” by George Duby, and “Andreas Capellanus’s Scholastic definition of Love” by Don A. Monson, one can see two unique interpretations to Capellanus’s work. For this short reflection, I will first provide the major differences in both authors’ interpretations, while also using their evidence to either support or undermine my own interpretation of the source.
In Duby’s article, he argues that Capellanus’s work is not a “primer on courtly love but a critique.” While both authors agree of

The book’s third volume is a particularly insightful window into 16th century romantic ideals. Throughout Book Three, Baldassare Castiglione builds an elaborate perspective on what makes the perfect court lady, what sexual and social behavior is acceptable, and how an ideal couple (both courtier and court lady) should function.
In Marie De France’s poem “Lanval”, the knight Lanval faces immense cultural pressure to get married and have a male heir, as it is the norm in King Arthur’s kingdom. It may appear that “Lanval” is supporting the concept of the institution of marriage, as the story had a heavy focus on marriage, and the court nearly punished Lanval for rejecting Guinevere. On the surface, the poem could easily mislead the reader to believe this is the case, but without further analysis, the reader may miss the courting that the mystery-lady has provided Lanval, which prove why the text critiques the establishment of marriage, as her courting is very much of the inverse of a typical heterosexual relationship in the culture. According to American mythologist, Joseph Campbell, “The greatest love was during the Medieval Ages, when noble hearts produced a romantic love that transcended lust” (Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers [2001]). In Chaucer’s “Franklin Tale” the plot revolves around a married couple: the knight, Arviragus, his young wife, Dorigen, and a young squire, Aurelius who importunes and attempts to Dorigen. The characters can be said to oscillate between desire and their ego honor which affects what they say and do. Lacan’s definition of desire tells us that we desire for recognition from this “Other.” Our desire is to become what the other person lacks. Duby’s model of courtly love is a concept that focuses on chivalry, nobility and women being at the center. In this paper, I will examine what the story reveals about the relation each character has to his or her desire, how they act in accordance to their desire and the role magic or illusion plays in the plot and how it affect characters’ relation to desire.

Braden sees this capacity for seduction having developed via the kiss’s growing presence in Petrarchan-inspired poetry of the sixteenth century. In some texts, the kiss is one “in which souls are exchanged without the taint of physical lust, and possibly with that protection they become part of the expected commerce between lover and lady in almost all Renaissance venues” (108). But as Braden shows through Pierre de Ronsard, the kiss wished from the beloved could turn from a chaste kiss—which Ronsard’s poet dismisses as “icy”—into one that has “savour in the mouth, or never kiss” at all (qtd. in Braden 108-109). This transformation from chaste/unconsummated love into more erotic poems is a subject on which Philip Sidney later complains in his Defence of Poesy, arguing that the once-virtuous love poems have become “larded with passionate Sonnets” intended to seduce

The medieval knight suffers greatly for his love, who is often someone else's wife. He will do anything to protect and honor her, remaining faithful at all costs. Adultery and secrecy characterize these relationships. The knight views a woman and experiences true love. During the Middle Ages, Courtly love was a code which prescribed the conduct between a lady and her lover (Britannica). The relationship of courtly love was very much like the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege. The lover serves his beloved, in the manner a servant would. He owes his devotion and allegiance to her, and she inspires him to perform noble acts of valor (Schwartz). Capellanus writes, in The Art of Courtly Love, “A true lover considers nothing good except what he thinks will please his beloved”. The stories of Marie de France and Chrétien de Troyes illustrate the conventions of courtly love.
The modern concept of love owes a great deal to the Humanist tradition of the Renaissance. The humanists focused on perfection and exaltation of this life as opposed to the afterlife. In Tristan and Iseult the seeds of Renaissance love are present in the Middle Ages. To the modern eye, it is a mystery how the period of the Middle Ages produced the seeds of the diametrically opposite Renaissance. Yet it is necessary to understand this transformation if one is to fully comprehend the forces that helped produce the modern consciousness.
