Tyle, the invention of the weaving machine unfortunately pushed Carnegie’s family in to poverty “In 1848, Carnegie’s family left Scotland and moved to Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, where his father and eventually him worked in a cotton factory” (Tyle). After leaving the cotton factory “Carnegie became a messenger boy for the Pittsburgh telegraph office and eventually made his way up to telegraph operator” (Tyle). According to Laura B. Tyle “Thomas A. Scott, the superintendent of the western division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, made Carnegie his secretary at the age of eighteen.” Later, Carnegie took over Scott’s position of the railroad. Carnegie soon went to work as a telegraph messenger and his quick thinking, dedication, and results caught the eye of Tom Scott. Scott made Carnegie his personal secretary and telegrapher. Seeing the young man’s commitment, Scott raised Carnegie through the ranks until he surpassed even him at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He also helped come up with the first sleeper car that truly worked at that time. Carnegie left the Railroad company, or the nest as they say, to join with the Keystone Bridge Company. During this time, he built a bridge out of steel that had never done before, yet his method for calming down the public was a well-liked and known superstition involving an elephant. Carnegie began working at the age of 13 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He eventually became a telegraph messenger and then moved up and became an assistant to one of the most important railroad officials. He then learned the ropes of the railroad industry and business. In 1856, he became superintendent. Over the next 10 years, Carnegie became known as a steel tycoon and started his own steel company. He became establishing different plants throughout the country. By the late 1800’s, the Carnegie Steel Corporation became the largest steel company in the world.
