The novel ‘Trash’, is a novel about three dumpsite boys, Raphael, Gardo and Rat, trying to hide from the police. At the beginning of the book, Raphael finds a bag containing money and the identity of José Angelico, which they later find out is dead. It turns out that José Angelico stole money off Senator Regis Zapanta and the police are looking for the bag to track him down. Meanwhile, Raphael, Gardo and Rat are trying to hide the bag from the police and at the same time find the money that José stole.
Our values are an important and valuable part of who we are and make up our personality and influence our choices and our moral framework. Various values are explored and shown clearly clearly in the novel Trash by Andy Mulligan that was first published in 2010. This novel is about three boys brought up on the dumpsite called Behala. The adventure starts when the boys discover objects owned by Jose Angelico. The boys then go out on a quest for justice for Jose Angelico in a world of corruption. Mulligan uses characterisation to show his characters values. Senator Zapanta values money, Rat/Jun Jun values survival and Jose Angelico values justice. Through the characterisation and the values it is easy to filter the good and bad people.
In addition another key factor which has a significant impact on the manner in which the Ratcatcher’s role can be interpreted is the language used to describe him in the given extract. He is described as someone who “hisses” the aggressive words “I will find you.” The use of the strong verb “I will” indicates a threatening and predatory tone. A similarly threatening tone is used further into the play by an officer who exclaims “Sir! Sorry Sir” indicating Eva to repeat after him. The stage directions also state that the officer “bodysearches Eva” which reflect his threatening and patronising character. The similar character of authority figures to the Ratcatcher suggests that perhaps these figures are just the reality version of the Ratcatcher.
The additional purpose in the setting of his idea is to remind himself of the rules of dumpster diving, what things you may be able to learn from it, and the advantages along with the disadvantages.
Andy Mulligan’s “Trash” deals with challenging issues, including poverty and children living in third world countries. He uses setting descriptions and rich characters in this book to help the reader to understand poverty and third world countries as it helps the reader to understand the themes in the book. Poverty and third world countries are also presented to the reader as Mulligan uses different language techniques throughout the book like the description of the dumpsite. Sensory language and imagery are the techniques that Mulligan uses to cause the reader to almost physically feel some or all the five senses that Mulligan intends to share with his audience.
for 2 weeks. Rat is unable to adjust to this night life, and begins to act eccentric towards the surrounding environment. Rat Kiley’s hallucinations eventually leads to his demise when he shoots himself in the foot to escape the war.
The assignment I chose to do was "Option 4: Creating a book code" and the steps I had to accomplish in order to finish are quite simple. First and foremost I had to complete the assigned reading,"Trash" By Andy Mulligan and I then used pages 231-232 as a starter for my book code. From there I had to fully comprehend the idea of a book code and come up with one since there can be many variations to a book code. I went with the one that was explained on page 231 where the first number represents the page you start on, second is the amount of lines down you need to go and the next number is how many characters (includes punctuation and spaces) you have to go in. The slash represents the turning of a new page. After that point, I came up with
Rat’s key qualities are leadership, smart and empathic.Rat shows the quality of leadership in the scene where he goes to the station. A quote which give evidence of this quality is “don’t run he said slow down ok.” ( Mulligan, 2011, pg.42). Another important quality that Rat shows is smart. He demonstrates this quality in the scene where he make it look like he is meant to be there. A quote which gives evidence of this quality is “ they stop and played with the drinks machines.” (Mulligan, 2011‘ pg.42). Finally, Rat’s quality of empathic is shown in the scene where he said that is ok straight away with out knowing what it is. A quote which gives evidence of this quality is “ we need your help I said. That ok.” ( Mulligan, 2011,
The author has also made intentional attempts to persuade the audience through the use of logical statements backed up by evidence. Eighner has started the essay by introducing how he viewed dumpsters as valuable objects. He then gives reasons why he is depending on dumpsters for his food. Being out of the workforce, he had no means of acquiring meals. He thus seeks refuge to the dump sites to get what he described as discarded and perfectly good food items. To support his position, Eighner informs his audience that this decision followed his inability to buy food as the little money he had was used to pay rent. He writes, “I put almost all my sporadic income into rent. The necessities of daily life I began to extract from Dumpsters” (Cite). Hence, he is able to convince the audience that his actions were as a result of saving money for rent.
In the essay “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner, Eighner talks about materialism and wealth. He explains his process of dumpster diving and the best places to go to dumpster dive. Eighner incorporates tone, detail, irony, observation, and ethos throughout his essay.

The novel Trash, by Andy Mulligan, is a very controversial and emotional book. Trash makes readers wonder why poverty to this extreme is still happening in the world, despite everything people are trying to do to stop poverty. I recently participated in a book club meeting, about Trash, and have grown as a person because of it. In my opinion, during our book club meeting, the members of my book club enriched, challenged, and reinforced my ideas, beliefs, and opinion on Trash. My top three discussion moments were whether or not police discrimination, and corruption is the primary cause of extreme poverty in some regions and extreme wealth in some, whether or not it is every ok to steal, and lastly whether or not Gardo and Raphael’s aunt should be able to stay at home while the two young boys work in a garbage dump.
A) A contemporary problem raised in “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner Is the amount of wealth spent by consumers, and the effect of that. Consumers spend too much money and waste even more when they throw food and clothing away. In the essay he explains the way of life as an scavenger and how to demonstrate how people are able to live by the minimal resources although most consumers continue to buy things they do not need and continue to waste resources that may be valuable to others. Aside from food, he additionally describes the emotional impact that living out of a dumpster can have on a person. He describes finding sad things such as "abandoned teddy bears, shredded wedding books, and pets lying in state." Seeing the pets makes him think about his dog Lizbeth and how she is likely to end up with a dumpster as her final resting place, as Eighner does not see himself having a place for her before she passes on. Rummaging causes Eighner to consider how much individuals underestimate, including the way that they can purchase something new to replace something old that they have discarded. He feels frustrated because of the individuals who don 't have that extravagance.
