Misty Gifford Instructor Tim Harding American Art History 21 May 2013 Andy Warhol vs. James Gill The following paper will compare and contrast the works of Andy Warhol and James F. Gill. I will begin by discussing Mao Tse-Tung No. 91 by Andy Warhol. This is a silk-screen portrait of the communist Chinese leader Mao Tse-Tung. It is a simple forward facing portrait from the shoulders up, created with garish colors. Artist: Andy Warhol Title: Mao Tse-Tung No. 91, 1972 Size: 36” x 36” Medium: Screen print on Beckett High White Paper In this work, Andy Warhol used very saturated colors to create a bold image that stands out from the norms of art. The colors on his pallet for this particular work are yellow, blue-violet, and …show more content…
The blue and orange are complimentary to one another, and blue-green is a tertiary color. These pigments agree with one another. The way that they are placed on the canvas makes it easy for the eye to travel. The arrangement on the canvas begins at the top and works its way to the bottom. Much like the choice in color, the arrangement also assists in helping the eye to travel across the entire work of art. When James Francis Gill was first recognized in 1962 at The Felix Landau Gallery in L.A., he did so by walking into the gallery unannounced with a series of paintings under his arm titled “Women in Cars”. (Galerie Michael) In these earlier works, Gill illustrated upper class women who always wore their sunglasses stepping out of their cars. It bewildered him that you could never see their eyes; therefore, he chose to do a series about it. (James Gill Full Circle) Candy Apple Chick II I believe is accompanied by this earlier idea of Gill’s, although the triple portrait of the woman does not have on sunglasses. This to me represents some sort of awakening. It almost says to me, “I don’t have to hide; now I can see the light.” In a very seductive manner, the woman’s leg is stepping out of the car. She wears a black stiletto, and you can see where the top of her panty hose ends. If you were to put sunglasses on this woman, it would seem that she was hiding a secret or maybe just wanted to appear mysterious. Then instead of a woman’s face with eyes
I image him creating this amazing painting while sitting in his room and looking out his window early in the morning, or late at night. I think the rich blue colors make the painting seem less depressing and actually makes the photo have a much more charming feel to it. I think this is interesting because you would think van Gogh would draw something darker since he was basically locked up and couldn’t
There have been different art forms that have come and go over the course of time. Hence I will discuss, two significant movements like Post-impressionism and Pop art. Two important artists from these movements are, Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. There are many differences and very few similarities between these two movements and artists, although more differences. Van Gogh is one of the most captivating artists of post-impressionism. . Throughout his career Van Gogh has painted many works. One of those magnificent paintings is “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. In the other hand we will discuss one of the popular paintings “ Gold Marilyn” by Andy Warhol. Warhol is also the most famous of the Pop Artists and played a major role in making the art movement popular.
While the painters after the Impressionism period were collectively called the “Post-Impressionists,” the label is quite reductive. Each artist had their own unique style, from Seurat’s pointillism to Signac’s mosaic-like divisionism, Cezanne, Émile Bernard, and others. These artists were all connected in that they were reacting to the aesthetics of Impressionism. Two of the more influential painters from this movement were Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, who aimed to connect with viewers on a deeper level by access Nature’s mystery and meaning beyond its superficial, observable level. However, each artist’s approach to achieving this goal was different. In close examination of Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait (Dedicated to Paul Gauguin) and Paul Gauguin’s Self-Portrait with Portrait of Émile Bernard (Les misérables), one may clearly see the two artists’ contrasting styles on display.
Although Vincent van Gogh and Sol Lewitt share a similarity in their use of lines, overall, they have very different approaches in how they use these lines. Vincent van Gogh uses his lines in a loose, chaotic, free way. The way he uses the lines almost creates a mood within his artwork; it allows his pieces of art to show emotion and tell more of a story. As shown in Vincent van Gogh’s painting, The Sower, his use of different line types allows the painting to “…posses its own direction and flow”. Also, with van Gogh’s artwork, he seems to place the lines in groups, allowing them to create a more distinct picture.
As we all know, color is the voice for the artist 's sentiment. It makes up the appearance of a picture. Color is the decisive factor in depths of the two-dimensional plane of the artwork, making the viewer feel physically and mentally attracted, or the context of things - the phenomenon the author wants to present. Colors have been around for a long time, but there is not a common definition for colors. And perhaps humans are one of the luckiest creatures that can identify colors. Often, the recipient 's eye knows a myriad of colors and colors that always change based on the relationship between light and perspective. In art, color creates a sense of
Protesters were attacked by dogs, and sprayed with water hoses. Warhol contributed this small print to a portfolio of work by ten artists, published the year after the riot. Andy Warhol created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Warhol was known for his “Death and Disaster painting.
The color tone is mostly analogous in the mural; however, there are complementary colors in detail elements such as the artist uses blue and green for large areas to represent river and mountains, uses red and orange to paint houses, huts, horses, small roads and clothes in the village to create emphasis point. For the color tone that artist uses, the harmony of blue and green of the most of the areas can represent the abundance of water or farms in the village and a rainbow ribbon shows what the leader gives to people in the village as
The flowers face many angles and are all different, most have contrasting shades of green leaves surrounding the petals and varying stem widths and lengths. This creates interest throughout the painting. To complement the bright yellow flower petals, Van Gogh has detailed a baby blue background with small, vertical and horizontal brush strokes. This contrasts well with the yellow flowers and helps to separate them from the yellow foreground. Also, to break all the yellow sections, he has cleverly used a lighted yellow tint on the bottom half of the vase, rather than shades, which he has used to outline the petals of the flowers. In doing this and by also adding light to the front petals and vase, Van Gogh has added a third dimension to his painting. Like Olley, Van Gogh has painted this artwork in warm colours to create a joyful and uplifting artwork to look at.
For the second art encounter I visited the Museum of Art at BYU and viewed the Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso print exhibit. There were several other modernist artist on display in the exhibit, such as Lichtenstein and Kalloeitz, however Warhol and Picasso were the artist that are most talked about in this course. Both of these artist are considered to be modernist, however their works look very different. Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn Monroe print was on display showing the industrial, pop side of modernist art. Warhol’s art imitates the negative social norms of the time. His lowd use of neon color and choice of subject add to the growing popularity of veneration of celebrities. He also was one of the first artist to mass produce his art, adding
We can also see the use of black shades to create a hole at the bottom part of the rock. With his excellent use of colors, we can identify the good, healthy and green grass from the bad, unhealthy, brown grasses. Looking beyond the main focus of the painting, he uses colors to separate the sky from the land in the background creating a solid form of perspective on the painting. He also uses colors to create water forms as seen behind the young character. Now, for the sky, he uses shades of white to magnificently differentiate the thick clouds from the light ones. He also uses this to create a source to light to the whole area. All these put together creates a splendid, realistic and familiar atmosphere for the viewers to relate with.
The use color holds a lot of meaning in this painting, and the use of color reveals very important symbolism itself. The values of hues were used to symbolize the vast wealth of the two subjects, from the rich tones of the room to their clothing, but they also mean more than that. The use of intense green on the woman represents that she was from a family of merchants or high business. Since the woman was deceased when this paining was done, her bright and rich blue and
The use of dark colors in middle of the painting, with subtle hint of brighter colors like red, tan, and green, on the outside courts of the painting.
It is most predominantly pink, blue, and yellow at the bottom. There is a whimsical strip of orange that comes from the left edge; and from the right is supple organic lined oval, inside lays a dark mixture of blues, greens, and reds almost brown. It is symmetrical and balanced on both sides. There is a lot of flowing movement throughout the image that makes unity because nothing is fighting or contrasting with each other. The unity of colours gives harmony because everything blends together giving it a watercolour aesthetic.
Most colors within the visible light spectrum hold specific emotions that are conveyed to individuals by artists through their pieces of art. Van Gogh carefully incorporated both vibrant and dark colors in his iconic painting Café Terrace at Night, of which span across a vast array of emotions. One of the colors that stand out when you first observe the painting is the vibrant yellow used for the exterior of the café. The color yellow is known within the art community as a cheerful and warm color, helping the café to come across as an inviting gathering place to the individuals observing the painting. Another color that Van Gogh used which quickly grabs
Andy Warhol did a lot of paintings, mostly comics of artist or ads. The one that became his favorite one was the Campbell’s soup cans. The idea of him painting this painting came through an ad he saw at a gallery. This painting is different than all the paintings he has done throughout his career because it’s comic-strip painting.
