Animal Farm Analysis

"All oppression creates a state of war" -Simone de Beauvar, French Philosopher. Animal Farm by George Orwell is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. Each animal was a key character in the Revolution such as Napoleon being Joseph Stalin, Mr. Jones being Tsar Nicholas and Boxer, being an ignorant. Mr.Jones was run off the farm because the animals were tired of the drunken man mistreating them. What the animals didn't know was that they went from one dictator to a whole group of them. The pigs. Ignorance contributes to political and social oppression and is proved by the inability to comprehend what the pigs are doing to the other animals. The animals cannot read or write as well, are perplexed easily, couldn't see the blemishes in the pig's leadership, or how the pigs changed things and didn't see or completely ignored how the pigs had acted.

Animal Farm begins on Manor Farm, where overworked, tired, and hungry animals are unhappy in the conditions that they are in, but when an old boar named Old Major introduces the idea of a rebellion and encourages the animals to take control over the farm, the animals begin an uprising against the humans, taking control over the land and renaming the farm “Animal Farm.” However, greedy and corrupt leaders rise to power and turn a once prosperous farm, into a nightmare. In Animal Farm, George Orwell asserts the idea that absolute power results in corruption. Napoleon and the other pigs, interested in remaining superior, persuades the other animals by using intimidation and emotional appeals in order to keep control of the gullible animals.

It is clear, to the reader and to the animals in the story, that the pigs embraced the full role of man on Animal Farm in stride. They treated their fellow animals as Mr. Jones had in the past, in cruel and harsh ways. They do so to gain money and leisure from their fellow animals’ product. Eggs, foal, or even dung. If it could be sold then the pigs would whisk it away from the animals and sell it for every cent that they could. Animal Farm is a novel written by George Orwell. The story takes place in a farm full of animals. Eventually, the animals rebel against the humans, which leads them the make their own government. As the book progresses Orwell uses many types of literary devices to communicate his opinions and thoughts specifically about the government in the society. In Animal Farm Orwell uses satire through the animal allegory, and irony, commenting on the the Russian Revolution, to show a connection between the individuals of a society and a totalitarian government and to create a cautionary tale that warns the readers about abuse of power.

Animal Farm written by George Orwell is an animal fable happens in a farm where animals start building a communism society, but end up being totalitarianism, hinting obliquely at the communists in the real world. The gaps between pigs and other common animals, demonstrate the theme that the corruption of power appears when majority is ruled. The intelligence superior allows the pigs placing themselves at a position which is closer to the power and which is more easily to corrupt. The inability to question the authorization makes the other common animals becoming the naïve working class who suffers the corrupting influence of power. In Animal Farm, subsequent to the suspension of Mr. Jones, the pigs of the farm were in charge of the whole farm including the other animals; they were in fully superior to all the other animal of the farm as they were most clever. Nonetheless, the pigs took advantage of their new hierarchy by tricking the animals into allowing them to have larger portions of food. Every time the pigs were asked why they are consuming more foods than others they would replying saying that they must be in good health.The pigs would tell the others animals that Mr. Jones would return if the pigs were not in charge. “ "Comrades!" he cried. "You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. However, the pigs had a change in mind. They decided to be leaders of the farm because they believed they were the smartest. Nonetheless, they unknowingly become “human”. This is where the quote comes into play. The pigs start to forget how Jones acted and started to become Jones but in animal form. They even changed all the commandments to satisfy all their needs. They turned “No animal can sleep in a bed,” to “No animal can sleep in a bed with sheets.” And “No animal can drink alcohol,” to “No animal can drink alcohol to excess,” and so on and so forth. This just shows that the pigs did not want to break the seven commandments so instead, they changed it to make it seem like they are doing nothing

The pigs were able to bend the animals at their will with simple words, empty promises of more food and early retirement kept the animals doing more and receiving less while the leaders did less and received more. Another example of the leaders making the farm miserable would be squealer using propaganda. According to the text “ “There were times when it seemed to the animals that they worked longer hours and fed no better than they had done in Jones’s day. On Sunday mornings Squealer... would read out to them the lists of figures proving that the production of every class of foodstuff had increased by two hundred per cent, three hundred per cent, or five hundred per cent, as the case may be. The animals saw no reason to disbelieve him, especially as they could no longer remember very clearly what conditions had been like before the rebellion” ( Orwell 92). The leaders began to think for the followers altering their thoughts so they would never be suspicious of the leaders.

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and and from pig to man again, but already it was impossible to say which was which.” Orwell wrote Animal Farm as an allegory based on problems resulting from the Russian Revolution. In Animal Farm, George Orwell uses tone, characterization, and stylistic elements to show that people in power use manipulation to stay in power.

George Orwell’s timeless novel Animal Farm is political satire about the era of The Soviet Union and Communism as an action rather than an idea that was meant to be expressed on paper. In George Orwell’s, Animal Farm, the idea of an authoritarian government lead by animals is played out, literally. The first few chapters of the book and it’s continuous use of the word Comrade and animals referring to their peers as Comrade seems apparent that Animal Farm has communist undertones, alternatively the animals authoritarian form of government is called Animalism. The novel Animal Farm by George Orwell and the movie Animal Farm (1999) have similar stories, but take different directions, resulting in different themes. The themes in both pieces of media acknowledge the manipulation that the powerful uses to take power, however the novel shows the lower class in a hopeless situation, while the movie shows the lower class rising up and fighting back.

Animal Farm is a novel satirizing communism in Soviet Russia by George Orwell. Animal Farm shows many methods of propaganda. After a farm’s pigs lead the rebellion against the farm’s owner, Mr. Jones, they aim to lead a communist society or animalism as the animals refer to their new lifestyle. Their new farm was renamed Animal Farm rather than Manor Farm. Seven commandments were put forth by the animals, one of which was “all animals are equal”. Three pigs stood out from the rest, Napoleon, Snowball and Squealer. Squealer was a brilliant talker, he always got his way through words. Snowball and Napoleon lead the farm, yet the leader position was disputed among them. During a meeting Napoleon’s dogs purposely chased Snowball out of the farm, which lead to the Animal Farm’s tyrant ruler, Napoleon, to rise in power.

‘…you would not rob us of our repose, would you, comrades? You would not have us too tired to carry out our duties? Surely none of you wishes to see Jones back?' (p.46). Much like Australia's situation with boat people and declaring islands not part of Australia, so the refugees can't gain access to citizen rights, the Laws of Animalism changed with the Pigs' will. Manipulation and twisting of words and laws meant that the Pigs' were never in the wrong. ‘Squealer always spoke of it as a ‘readjustment', never as a ‘reduction'.' (p.75). Not only was propaganda used as a means to keep society repressed, but also violence and intimidation through subtle and constant threats ‘Surely you do not wish to see Jones back?', and fear of the repercussions if you were found to be betraying the revolution.

When Benjamin yells “ They are taking him to the knackers!”(Orwell 122), it is certain that the pigs have made the decision to kill a fellow animal. Furthermore, the pigs can be seen altering the seven commandments when “Squealer temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, and near at hand there lay a lantern, a paint brush, and an overturned pot of white paint”(Orwell 108). Squalor has been caught adapting the seven commandments to fit the needs of the pigs. The commandments were set to separate the path of mankind and the path of animalism, but the more the pigs adjust the rules, the more humanlike the animals become.
