Animation: Differences Between Eastern European And European Animation

Aside from basic two dimensional art, I have always been fascinated with the unique stories told through film. The way that a picture is painted through film is something that one cannot find in just any art form. Film is unique and fascinating, so I sought to find a way to unite the two worlds of film and the 2D art that I enjoy so much. My findings were that digital animation combined the artistic style that I love and the storytelling of film in a way that intrigued me beyond any other career I had researched.

Animation is just another medium to tell stories. Actually, scratch that. Animation is more than just about telling stories. It can be about anything. Wherever your imagination takes you. There is no right or wrong in animation.

Animation has a variety of differences between Japanese culture and the culture of the United States. While animation is usually made for the sole purpose of entertainment for children in the United States, Japanese animation, also known as anime as it is referred to both in Japan and in the West, is a form of media that is enjoyed by people of all ages. Unlike the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob Square pants, both very popular American animations shows in their times, anime focuses more on drama and other non childlike qualities. The differing cultures of the United States and Japan can be considered the main factor to the huge differences in their own respected animation styles.

Animation is the technique of photographing successive drawings or the positioning of models to create illusion of movement in the movie. Animation is all around us. Animation is in our homes, schools, and workplace. Films that used animation were mainly Disney movies. Disney movies used animation in cartoons every since mid 1900s.

For longer than anyone can remember, we have created and performed stories for each other. Plays, puppet shows, and other forms of moving stories. Something to pass the time. But then there came the world of animation; pictures, presented one after another, so that it looks like a moving picture.

Film is often an important medium through which the filmmakers can express important views and opinions. Often, filmmakers use cinema as a way to criticize the societal norms and other problems with the government in an entertaining way. Satire is the use of humor to critique serious issues. Through animated films, satire can be implemented in a much more effective way. The cartoon drawings and animations directors can greatly exaggerate elements of real life in order to satirize them to a higher degree. In the Fyodor Khitruk films Story of One Crime, and Film, Film, Film from the Masters of Russian Animation collection, animation is used to satirize both the housing crisis of the Soviet Union and the filmmaking process / bureaucracy in order to expose the heinous situation imposed on Russian citizens and arts.

“Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world,” said Walt Disney of his beloved cartoons. While it is true that cartoons are an interesting medium of visual entertainment, their unique ability to convey information to people, adults and children alike, make the animated film medium one of the most far reaching means of propaganda. Today it is impossible to imagine American animated cinema without Disney and its cartoons. The American captivation with Disney has not changed much in the seventy years since World War II. Animation; an art form with the ability to tell a story and convey a multitude of emotions along with information. Animation can be found almost everywhere in media from commercials, to movies, to games. Every single animation need an animator or a team of animators to create it. There are many kinds of animation: 2D, 3D, motion graphics, visual effects. Each of these categories may have multiple people working on them using their own special skills to produce the final product. The reason for researching this occupation is because of my fascination and respect for the craft. I admire the art of storytelling immensely and the creativity that goes into it.

The technological factors in the animation industry are not really favorable. Though there are several supportive technologies, there is constant rapid change, resulting in quickly obsolete technologies. Consequently, keeping up with the dynamism of animation technologies becomes difficult.

Film Industry has been expansively affected by the changes in technology. The mechanical and digital innovations give cause to the influence of equipment, distribution and the way in which films are made and consumed. New trends shape directors and filmmakers to expand creatively towards telling stories in motions. The film industry has developed to one of the most important tools of communication, it's cause so powerful affecting the way individuals and societies think, act and behave. Among the new Era approaching film, and seeing celluloid film fade is that of the Digital Era and a camera that saw celluloid films passing hastened.
