Sarah Kay is a contemporary American poet. My first contact with her poetry was via YouTube. I knew about writers occasionally reading their works, I was a collector of song lyrics, but I was new to the existence of spoken word poetry. In short, spoken word poetry artists perform their poems. This art form is more lyrical, and, of course, more direct. The poem I saw her perform was “B”, and it was delivered in a Ted Talk.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, and can even be known to show up in men. Mary-Claire King devoted her studies to this horrible disease that takes the lives of over 40,000 women a year (BCRF). Since King had a strong background in mathematics and evolutionary biology she was able to take a new approach to learning more about this disease. She has been researching this disease for more than 40 years, but started her research from the beginning by analyzing the first gene of breast cancer. King discovered the ability to use gene mapping to trace the BRCA1 which shows a link with breast cancer. Although King was not the first to genetically clone this gene, she is shown to have various contributions to the first cloning.

When the vines grew large enough then the vines started to wrap themselves around Mary Ann. Once the vines were completely around her the vines took her soul and mind into the book. Her dermatologist prescribed antiviral creams, but nothing helped until she met Ted A. Thanks impart to Karen Clark who introduced a new way of dealing with catastrophic event, people were able to make close logical estimation of the magnitude of losses faced by insurers. Most notably, Clark was able to predict loses by “gathering very long-term historical data on hurricanes [and] combining those record with new data on property exposures [such as property] zip code, engineering reports, local building codes (p.6)” to model loses and profitability of catastrophic event. By doing so, she was able to lay a fundamental foundation of catastrophic risk modeling that various financial and insurance institutions heavily rely up on to some degree to this day.
