Isolation of the Human Spirit In “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank, a thirteen year old girl becomes one of the most well-known victims of World War II by writing every devastating experience she goes through during the 1940’s in her diary she calls “kitty”. This remarkable story provides every diary entry Frank wrote, and about what it was like being Jewish while hiding in a place her family called the ‘Secret Annex’ during World War II. During the family’s time of hiding, they each were required to wake up at 6:45 each morning, they could not go outside, and they were not able to turn on the lights once it got dark. Due to the fact that all of Frank’s time was occupied indoors, she had spent most of her time reading books and writing in her diary. Frank’s diary was very informative regarding what it was like during the holocaust, and at the same time introduced …show more content…
Without Anne’s isolation she would have never become so self-reflective of herself. Frank writes, “I never used to feel like this, my fun and amusements, and my girl friends, completely filled my thoughts. Now I either think about unhappy things, or about myself” (55). Frank’s isolation within the annex allows her to develop a sense of self-awareness. However, this self-awareness does not fully develop until later on when Frank realizes the knowledge Frank has of herself. Frank states: “I understand more and more how true Daddy’s words were when he said: ‘All children must look after their own upbringing.’ Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands” (260). Towards the end Frank realizes that she is in control of almost everything she decides to do, and her parents are only there for the emotional support and
During the holocaust many children were unable to process the emotional stresses placed on them by hiding. Many children along with their parents were unsure they would survive. This is one case in the Diary of Anne Frank. Anne is unsure about her future and whether or not she would live long enough to fulfill her dreams. This has a big impact on her way of thinking, but her father Otto Frank realizes this and steps in to make sure she never gives up hope of one day doing what she loves the most. “It’ll be hard I know. But always remember this Anneke. There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind.” (711) One thing many people feel when nothing is going well for them is the feeling of being trapped. It’s really easy to feel like nothing can help the situation when one is in the middle of it, but having someone who can help lift your emotions and thoughts off the ground is a God send. Everyone should go out of their way to offer encouraging words or emotional support when they can offer it, because who knows, it could be exactly what someone needs to hear in order to feel
“It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” (Anne Frank) Anne Frank was one of the many children who fell victim to the Holocaust during the World War II. Anne’s story is nothing short of a tragedy; she died at the early age of fifteen from Typhus while being held by the Nazi Regime, in the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. Before dying, Anne and her family went into hiding and lived secretly in her father's office building in the Netherlands. While living in the “Annex,” a secret hiding place, she developed many interests such as reading and writing. Anne is famous because she is one of the best-known victims of the Holocaust, her story has been shared with millions in a publication of her diary, and through her writing’s she introduces many people to the massacre and its horror.
Jews have perished because of their beliefs since the beginning of time but never have so many Jews been persecuted worldwide as they were in World War II. Anne Frank’s diary reaches a place within all of our hearts because it reminds us how easily the innocents can suffer. Sometimes we may choose to close our eyes or look the other way when unjustifiable things happen in our society and Anne’s tale reminds us that ignorance, in part, claimed her life. Sadly, her story is but one of many of those who died in the Holocaust and as with other Jews, her fate was determined by the country she lived in, her sex and her age.
People can only imagine the terrors that the Jews and other ethnic groups had to go through during the Holocaust in World War II. With Anne Frank’s diary, people can finally put themselves into the scene and captivate all the feelings and sentiments that Anne Frank has poured onto the pages. Anne Frank, her family, and their friends were known for hiding from the German Nazis in the Secret Annex for two years from 1942-1944. Innocent and naive,
"The Diary of Anne Frank" tells us a story about how her life as a Jew was drastically changing during the Holocaust and the start of World War II (WWII). She was a very intelligent young woman that had hopes and dreams. Anne was a normal teenager trying to find her way in life. All of that changed when the Nuremburg Race Laws were formed. Her father who was a World War I fighter hid his family and friends in a Secret Annex that was blended in with a normal neighborhood. As she lived for months in the Secret Annex, Frank had written her diary, full of her experiences in the Annex. Everything changed though, when she reached the end of her times in the Annex. Hitler's men had found Anne and her family and friends. This memoir adds in to the
Survival is living on the hope that better things are yet to come in your life. Right now in our country people survive because of hope and the belief that people are good and they will help them out. People survive when they are homeless on the streets only because of the people who are good at heart and give them food or money to buy clothing for the winter. Gerta survived because of her family and friends. Anne Frank survived because she believed that “Despite all the evil going on in the world I still believe that all people are good at heart.”
In the famous story of a girl, named Anne Frank, we see this true life story of this one girl hiding in the secret Annex with her family and friends. Anne Frank by Anne Frank, is a diary with her true feelings and confusion in life with comical laughs in it. But one thing she is different is, isolation. She feels isolated from her family is different values. Her mother she feels the most isolated from. In the outside world, her family is being isolated also , in hiding. But in her own way of happiness too. The Secret Annex shows all the isolation, good and bad of Anne, and her feelings.
Norman Mailer once stated, "For what does it mean to be a hero? It requires you to be prepared to deal with forces larger than yourself." This quotation means that there are some things that certain people will not be able to face head on. It takes them a while to physically and mentally prepare themselves for what forces lie ahead. This quotation is valid because there are going to be certain things people just can't face or they aren't strong enough to face them. The film, The Fighting Sullivans and the film The Diary of Anne Frank prove the interpretation because both of the films are about a group of people who have to deal with forces that are bigger than themselves. The film The Diary of Anne Frank supports the critical lens about Norman Mailer's quote because they had to go into hiding, hiding from the Germans which in this case were the bigger force. The first
Discrimination is now becoming a well-known term around the world; many acknowledge it from the time they came across: sexism, racism, ageism, and the type Anne Frank came across, persecution. Anne Frank was a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl who was hiding from the German Army or the Nazi’s, as they are better recognized back then. Her life story consisted of constantly escaping and being in isolation from those who wanted her dead; it was a difficult time to live in. Anne Frank was attacked because of her differences; Adolf Hitler (leader of the Nazi’s) was killing anyone who was not classified as “pure” or part of the “superior race”.
The Diary of Anne Frank is a remarkably moving book about the short life of a young girl and her family. The Holocaust was a horrible time for Jewish people and Anne and her Jewish family’s lives were completely turned upside down as a result. The war resulted in the deaths of countless people, mostly innocent people. Before the invasion on D-day and the end of the war not too long after, the rest of the world didn’t know the real disaster going on over seas. Anne Frank’s once secret diary has introduced the immense suffering and horror that occurred during the Holocaust.
Anne Frank faced adversity from her own family and the people who she had contact every day in the Secret Annexe. She was misunderstood and rejected from giving her opinions in the adults’ conversations just because she was just a teenager. She was probably more mature and thoughtful than Mrs. Van Daan. Her actions were always compared to her sister’s, which was unfair because she was expected to meet the near-impossible expectations
Miriam Korber and Alice Ehrmann have many similarities as far as their experiences during the Holocaust. They both see unthinkable horrors in the form of “hunger, cold, illness, filth, death, humiliation, and despair” (Korber 245). Unlike the six million Jews killed by the Holocaust, Alice and Miriam both survive, which led me to examine how their different experiences and personalities help them survive. They both face their emotions directly and use their diaries to vent which may be part of the reason they survive. On the other hand, Anne Frank always has hope and is naive to some of the horrors that others are experiencing. In this horrible time Anne Frank has privilege compared to Miriam and Alice who don’t have a support system or
During the devastating time of World War II, a Jewish teenage girl wrote a diary about the gruesome events she witnessed, this diary was named, Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank. Anne Frank lived in Holland and went into hiding when her sister, Margot, got a letter to go to a reception camp. The Franks faced terrifying moments during hiding. They witnessed war outside their window and stayed in the same house without even going outside for about two years. To add on, the Franks had to keep in mind how every day they could be arrested or even die. Sadly Anne and her family are arrested and are sent to Auschwitz, a concentration camp where she would later die. While in hiding, the Franks and the Van Daans, who were also in hiding with them,
Do you ever get mad when your parents say you can’t do something or go anywhere? Well, imagine how Anne feels being isolated in that room all day long, every day. The story "Diary of Ann Frank" reveals what it’s like to transition from childhood to adulthood in the modern life. The theme of the story is living in oppression and how it affects Anne as a person, both physically and emotionally. For two years, Anne and her family along with another family are locked up in hiding in a secret loft. “The diary of Anne Frank” shows us that sometimes family is all we got but we have to make the best of it and be thankful we have our family. Anne Frank quoted “we all eat and read like one family” (page 230) This statement tells us that no matter what
The Diary of Anne Frank holds many themes and life lessons; however, from a psychological standpoint there are many psychological concepts present. The members of the
