An adult may lie to a child, but sometimes it’s for their own good. Other times it is because they’re too afraid but want to keep their kids calm. There are a few times, however, when an adult isn’t looking out for a child’s best interests. Many have lied to the main character of Number the Stars, Annemarie Johansen. Most of the time it’s for her own safety. Annemarie is just a kid,but she thinks like an adult. She’s smarter than most children and can tell when something is wrong. Mama and Uncle Henrik lied about Great Aunt Birte being in the casket that was sent to Uncle Henrik’s house, because there was no Great aunt Birte. “ There is no Great Aunt Birte, and has never been. Your mama lied to you and so did I.” page 77 If they had told …show more content…
No matter how scared she was, she would never show it to her children. She was dishonest with them so they wouldn’t be afraid. Mama tries to comfort Annemarie’s sister Kirsti when she sees the ships in the harbour burning by saying it was her birthday celebration. Annemarie and Mama both know what it is and lie to Kirsti. “The sky in the southeast had been ablaze, and mama had comforted her by calling it a birthday celebration.” page 31 Annemarie found out what happened, and Mama could only comfort Kirsti with lies. Peter Nielsen was a part in the resistance against the nazis; he usually was up to no good for the right reasons. He would bring the Johansens the illegal newspaper, De Frie Danske. Peter didn’t tell Annemarie about her sister, Lise’s death the real way it happened. She told her that Lise had been hit by a car, which was true to some extent. In reality, She was part of the resistance too, and was run down by a nazi car during a meeting. “ From the military car, they saw her, and simply ran her down.” page 131 Peter and Lise were doing wrong by some people, but for them it was right. In conclusion, Annemarie was lied to for her own protection, because an adult was too afraid to tell her, or because there was someone up to evil. Sometimes it is for the best to lie to a child. Other times they need to know the
Parents around the world tell their children they can tell them anything but when their children tell them anything serious they say they don’t believe them or that they're outright lying. They are telling their children it’s not okay to lie or keep secrets, but then say the children are
In the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne is a dynamic character who is disrespectful and immature in the beginning of the play. When Anna had a nightmare in the beginning of the play, her mother came into her room to comfort her. Her mother offered Anne water and to stay with her until she fell asleep, but Anne said it wasn’t necessary to stay. When Mrs. Frank stated, “But I’d like to start with you . . . Very much. Really.” Anne replied, “I’d rather you didn’t” (398). This scene demonstrates Anne is both immature and rude because she rejects her mother’s help. Her mother is likely very hurt by this rejection, especially since, as her mother leaves the room, Anne asks for her father instead. In the end of the play, Anne shows she is a dynamic character by displaying the character traits brave and thoughtful. While Peter and Anne
It is clear that Anne no longer cared for the group ultimately betraying and risking the life of everyone in the group. This effected many people such as Anne herself because she ended up taking her life because she did not the trust the group also the whole group need to stay more alarmed just in case anyone found out about their skills.
Don’t you hate it when your family and strangers treat you in a harsh way. Anne Frank was treated harshly by some people in the secret annex people would yell at her call her spoiled lazy and was always telling her what to do. But some people treated her nicely like Peter VanDaan and her dad in a way that made her feel loved by some people around her. Anne was a twelve year old girl when she was forced into hiding because she was a Jew in Nazi territory during WW2. Anne is treated by the people in the annex in many ways and that effects her character in such a way that changes her character.
The Holocaust was a time of war where many families were separated from one another and many had died from this tragic event. Although, from the book “Diary of Anne Frank” a Jewish girl named Anne that had been affected by the Holocaust had said, “In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart.” Even though Anne and her family faced many hardships during the Holocaust Anne still saw the good in it all, and after reading the book I have to agree with Anne’s quote. One of the main reasons of why I am siding with Anne is because of Peter’s actions throughout the book and how his actions rapidly changed once Anne showed kindness to him. However, I can see how some people may disagree with Anne’s quote throughout Mr. Van Daan’s horrible actions throughout the book.
Further and further into her life, Anne becomes more of a caring person than she already was. On page 344, the Van Daan's were very close to being kicked out of the secret annex. Anne knew the consequences of being kicked out would endanger the family. Anne cared so much about the family leaving because if they lived on the streets, they could very well be captured and thrown into a concentration camp. She argued with her mother, that she should not throw them n the street because of the consequences. Anne states that she cares deeply for Miep's life, on page 349. Anne understands that Miep is risking her life, every trip she takes up to the annex. Since Miep is helping out people that are Jewish, she could be put to death for her actions, if she is caught. Finally on page 313, line 2259, Anne states, " I'm never going to do that again. Never! Of course I may do something worse... but at least I'll never do that again!" She said this after an argument involving herself, and her mother. After this argument, Anne states the direct quote. You can infer that she wants to change her attitude towards her mother. This would mean that truly, Anne does care about her mother very
Anne had to suffer many hardships throughout her life especially while in hiding. During this time, the living conditions were poor, relationships formed within the Annex, and having enough food for everyone was very difficult. As the Nazis began invading Germany, the Franks made their way to the Netherlands to begin hiding.
D. Annemarie’s motive would be influenced by the time period because the Nazis were kicking the jews out of their home and them to move. So when she tried to take off the necklace she got mad because she did not want her best friend to leave.
Consider the times at some point of your life you have lied when you were a child and why. Some children worry how their mom and dad would react, whether or not if they would get into trouble. Due to the fact that covering up the truth seems easier than dealing with a lie, one of the unending problems that many parents face is lying by their children. Most children tell lies at some point, but it can a surprise the first time you hear your child lying. Learning how to lie is part of a child’s development.
Just like our founding father Benjamin Franklin states “Half a truth is often a great lie.” (Franklin) This indeed is true as illustrated to us through Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. About halfway through the play Juliet is confronted by her parents and told she is to be married to Paris. Although this may seem unfair it was common in those days to have a marriage suitor chosen without the bride 's consent. Juliet however, was guarding a few secrets of her own the biggest one being she was already married to her parents mortal enemy Romeo. This small lie or lacks of communication eventually lead to Juliet’s and Romeo’s downfall. The book of Proverbs offers many exceptional verses on lying one of them stating “Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal truthfully are His delight.” (The New King James Bible Proverbs 12:22) Untruthful parent and teen communication often point to a guilty teen. Teens often lie for privacy, for fear of punishment, or to hide failure all the while destroying a parent’s trust.
Uncle Henrik was milking Blossom, the cow, and Annemarie had the courage to go out there and talk to him about it. She wasn’t scared to talk to him about it. She wanted to know why they were lying to her because Mama had never lied to her. She also had the courage to take the basket with the handkerchief in it to Uncle Henrik at the boat. She could have died, but she wasn’t scared.
The first text, “Lies, Lies, Lies” found several types of lies, a few being known to protect other Anne Frank survived as long as she did because those sheltoring her and her family lied to the Nazis.”(Gray, paragraph 2) This proves that if Miep and those helping Anne Frank didn’t lie, then no one would have survived for long. Another supportive statement is, “On
No one could leave the hiding place or raise their voices, in fear of discovery. Also, there were more than a few fights in the household that Anne was usually a part of because of her “big mouth” and her attitude. Although life in the Annexe was tough, they were blessed by Mr. Frank’s employees, Mr. Kraler, Koophuis, Miep, and Elli Vossen, who risked their lives to keep Anne and her family’s secret and bring them food and news. Living in the secluded Annexe made Anne feel lonely, but she became close friends with Peter Van Daan, whom she developed feelings for. They were there for each other, and they talked to each other about how they felt about certain things. Tuesday, 1 August, 1944, was the last time Anne wrote in her diary. She and her fellow hiders were discovered and taken away to be killed at concentration
Annmarie has to battle good and evil, the journey from a young girl to a grown woman, and her relationship with adults in the book number the stars. Annmarie has to do what is right for the jewish people in order to keep them safe.
Number the Stars, a novel, shows the strongness and respect Denmark contained when under Nazi occupation in WWII. Though the story is historical fiction, Lois Lowry used thought-provoking events to show the Danes resistance, honor, and hope for a better future. From the kingdom of Denmark’s beginnings, a powerful sense of patriotic unity is present that continues throughout its history and is still there today.
