Hackers have caused the government billions of dollars in damage over time and leaking tens of thousands of sensitive documents, most for sport. Although not all hackers are out there to cause damage; the Hacktavist group Anonymous is a group that strives to protect the users of the Internet. When many people think of hackers they automatically think they are doing it for nefarious reasons, they are unaware that most hackers actually help protect and improve the everyday life we have through the internet by not only strengthening the sites we use everyday, but also taking down known black hat sites and even protecting civil right by allowing us to see the vital information withheld from us by the government.

Anonymous is now, and has been for a while, taking down ISIS promoting and even recruiting social media accounts. These accounts are being used to recruit people around the world to ISIS and Anonymous is taking the first step to taking them down. In the article raincoaster states, “ISIS has done much of their recruiting work through social media channels: Facebook and Twitter, as well as more esoteric platforms. They use social media, particularly Twitter, as a propaganda tool and on this front they are considerably in advance of NATO and other Western forces, who tend to view such use as more of a risk than an advantage. And it is risky; meta data has revealed more than one fighter's location, and Russians will not soon forget the soldier who made headlines for the trail of selfies he left all over the Ukraine, proving that Moscow's claims of having retreated were untrue. By bringing the war to social media, ISIS stepped right into Anonymous' home turf. And they're not likely to forget that any time soon.”, This quote shows a lot but, above all shows how much can be done through social media and Anonymous rules it. They are able to limit and control social media due to their sheer size. It almost makes it seem like a war on two fronts one through the traditional style and they other through the internet. With ISIS being such a big threat to The United States and all of our allies, and though it may be illegal the US has allowed the take down of ISIS social media accounts with no repercussions. Due to this government statement it is open season on any terrorist accounts and Danny Yardon with the Wall Street Journal states, “the leaderless hacking group boasted on its Twitter accounts that it had disrupted the Twitter
