First of all, history is survival of the fittest. Basically history of mankind is of stronger people subduing weaker people.  We must annex territory otherwise it is in jeopardy of Spanish colonial rule. If we do not annex foreign land someone else will. Cuba is our neighbor.  It is a stone’s throw away from the State of Florida.  Is it right to ignore the plight of the people of Cuba?  They have been fighting for their freedom and independence almost continuously since 1878.  The Spanish Empire has committed many unspeakable acts on this island since the fighting began.  The Spanish Empire is mistreating our neighbors in Cuba.  It is well within our Monroe Doctrine tradition to ask that Spain give up the control of Cuba

The conflict was between the imperialists and the anti- imperialists, who were both in America and the Philippines. Imperialism is when one supports the annexation of another. In this case, America annexing the Philippines. Document A was written by the Platform of the American Anti- Imperialist League. This group of individuals thought poorly of imperialism and that it was wrong to take over others. According to this document, it states in the first paragraph, “... extinguish the spirit of 1776 in those islands. This is saying that by annexing the Philippines, we are forgetting all that happened when we broke free from Britain as rebels. If we did this, it would be extremely hypocritical. The period 1875-1920 has been described by some historians as a period of “selflessness” during which the United States helped weaker nations from dominant European powers and spread the “blessings of democracy and civilization.” Others have described the “New Manifest Destiny” as a time of “ruthless American expansion” at the cost of weaker nations and in violation of our own principles of consent of the governed and popular sovereignty.

During the 19th century the United States witnessed major changes. America went through its own industrial revolution and the technological advancements in manufacturing created a surplus in manufactured goods. The country was producing more than it could consume. The Industrial Revolution evolved the country from a consumer of manufactured goods to a producer, causing a raising need for raw materials.

The exploits of imperialism is averse to our American values, including personal and collective rights. One of these values, which is freedom, is a core component in our country. It embraces the fundamental beliefs put forth by our Constitution. One way nationalism was a unifying force was that it brought people together who were not loyal to the king and did not want him to rule. Many of these people we known as liberals and radicals. Since they were not loyal to their kings they were instead loyal to their people or to those that they shared a common bond with. Nationalism was also able to unify masses of people. Specifically nationalism was able to unify the country of Italy when nationalist in Italy had looked for leadership form from the largest and most powerful kingdom in the Italian states, Piedmont-Sardinia. Many times throughout history imperialism has been practiced by various major super powers of the world. For example, Western Europe decided they would extend their power after the Industrial Revolution since they became so wealthy from it. They expanded their empires into Africa, India and China. This is known as the New Imperialism. The desire for expansion was motivated by the hope of economic growth and more power. There are five types of Imperialism and many positive and negative views about them.

The age of imperialism was a time when various European countries and Japan sought to conquer the world with justification of civilizing the locals that were considered by them to be inferior. For the United States, it had been in a state of isolationism as Americans launched their own campaign of imperialism, also known as Manifest Destiny, against the Native Americans. However, by the turn of the 19th century, Americans became increasingly interested in world affairs and wanted some of the territories in the Pacific for resources. Thus, this sparked an intense argument among the Americans of whether a democratic republic should be able to acquire colonies like other superpowers. Josiah Strong once said, “The time is coming when the pressure of population on the means of subsistence will be felt here as it is now felt in Europe and Asia.

During the time between the late 19th century and early 20th century, America was going through significant changes. Following a revolution in Cuba against the Spanish, and the Americans intervening to start the Spanish-American War, the Americans received several territorial concessions from their defeated opponent. Thus, America started on the path to imperialism. McKinley and Roosevelt gained several territories in a short amount of time, and would look to continue America’s success since they had a strong navy and intelligent leaders. To a large extent, United States expansion continued in a social and cultural aspect through Manifest Destiny, yet it differed in how the new land was acquired and for what purpose.

Would you like if someone came into your house and start changing everything you do? Well, that is what the British did to India but on a bigger scale. The British thought that Indian had a lot of resources, which it did it was called “Jewel in the crown.” So, they came in and started changing their political, economic, and social ways of life. There were some positives and some negative to what happens when the British control India. This was a negative effect of India because they had no responsibility in their government, forced to grow cash crops, and learning the English language. Although I believe it was negative, some people believe it was a positive effect on India.

As the United States was gaining nationalism, they began to consider expanding their boundaries once they began demanding for it. As the ideas of Manifest Destiny quickly spread during the early 19th century, the patriots of obtaining the nation’s “destined” lands were more aggressive than passive through their expansionist policies, disregard towards minorities, and the effects that these policies would later reveal.

The Platform of the American Anti-Imperialist League spoke out about their opinion on America annexing the Philippines in October of 1899, a year after the annexation was placed. A Platform is a group or a political party who fights for a series of positions or beliefs. The American Anti-Imperialist League mentioned “We protested against the extension of the American sovereignty by Spanish methods” (Document A). The Filipinos were fighting against the United States and felt betrayed since they heard America was going to annex them. The Filipinos were demanding for their independence that they deserved, but America was too selfish to give it to them and denied their rights to have freedom. America was using military forces to pressurize these civilians to learn the United States ways of life and to learn christianity. Some argued that imperialism will bring together the integration of races, benefit the Filipinos from becoming an anarchy, and help spread democracy throughout the world. However others argued against it because it would lead America to where Spain is, bring brutal violence and chaos to America, and bring forth another Era of Slavery and the division of the Nation.

Across the Pacific, European powers were steadily extending their control over Asia and establishing their military strength. As a result, despite a previous bad experience under imperialistic policies, America opted to follow imperialism in the early 1900s. After the Spanish-American war, America had freed Cuba and was given Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands, and Guam.
