THE TRIAL OF SOPHOCLES' ANTIGONE For the trial of Antigone, the prosecution had the City of Thebes charge Antigone with treason and contempt. Since finding Theban statutes would take more time and effort than needed, we will use the United States Code. The statute for treason stipulates: Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $ 10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States. Federal case law holds that there are two elements to the crime of treason: adherence to the enemy and intent to betray. Absent one there is no treason. To sustain the charge of treason the government must prove the following
Antigone is an honorable character in this story of love and rebellion. The only thing that she does is disobey an order that is unjust and bury the remains of her
Both Antigone and Juror 8, from Antigone and Twelve Angry Men, use the power of one to get their points across, Antigone believes that she must bury her brother, while Juror 8 believes the suspect is innocent, both characters believe their actions are justified; Haemon stands up for Antigone with courage against the intimidation and force of his father, and juror 8 has the courage to stand up to the intimidation and force of juror 3.
As the tragedy concludes, the chorus issues its final words: "Pray for no more at all. For what is destined for us, men mortal, there is no escape," demonstrating how justice remains impartial to the prejudice of men; those who make imprudent judgments will ultimately suffer from the consequences of their actions. In Sophocles' Antigone, these prejudices notably surface in the form of paternalism as demonstrated through Creon's government, highlighting the importance of gender roles throughout the play. Therefore, analyzing the motif of gender roles and its effect on the definition of justice through the perspectives of Ismene, Antigone, and Creon enables the audience to understand how Sophocles' macroscopic analogy to humanity's
Sophocles, a great tragedian, was the one who gave Greek tragedies their traditional form. An important part of traditional Greek tragedies is the presence of a tragic hero. All tragic heroes should have the characteristics of rank, a tragic flaw, a downfall, and a recognition of mistakes. The seemingly tragic hero is Antigone. She wants to bury her brother Polyneices even though this would be going against Creon, who is her uncle and the king. When Antigone buries Polyneices Creon sentences her to death because of it. In Antigone by Sophocles the tragic hero is not Antigone because she only meets the characteristic of a tragic flaw, hers being pride, but doesn 't meet the other three characteristics of a
Our president of the United States Ronald Reagan should have been impeached, he committed treason when he sold fire arms to terrorist for the return of hostages. Even though it was for a good cause, it is still against the law and only because his president doesn’t mean he has the right to break a law without being punished. The law says that to whoever, as in everybody, who gives aid and comfort to enemies should be punished. “Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not
After the Espionage Act, came the Sedition Act in 1918. The Sedition Act did not allow language “tending to incite, provoke, and encourage resistance to the United States in said war”. This Act infringed further on people’s First Amendment rights. Individuals’ abilities to express themselves were curtailed. One of the people that went against this Act was Joseph Abrams. Abrams was a Russian immigrant who did not agree with the Americans invading Russia. Because of this,
The act stated that in time of war, the President of the United States has the right to take action against any person who was a citizen of the country the United States was at war with. The President was given the power to act against the citizens of that country who were at war with the United States, as long as the person was a male, not a citizen of the United States, and at least fourteen years old.
The opening events of the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, quickly establish the central conflict between Antigone and Creon. Creon has decreed that the traitor Polynices, who tried to burn down the temple of gods in Thebes, must not be given proper burial. Antigone is the only one who will speak against this decree and insists on the sacredness of family and a symbolic burial for her brother. Whereas Antigone sees no validity in a law that disregards the duty family members owe one another, Creon's point of view is exactly opposite. He has no use for anyone who places private ties above the common good, as he proclaims firmly to the Chorus and the audience as he revels in his victory over Polynices. He sees Polynices as an enemy to
Everyone has been guilty of some type of wrong in their lifetime, whether it was cheating on a test, lying, or not listening to someone when they are told to do something. Even those considered heroes are guilty of doing wrong and in this essay, the play Antigone by Sophocles will be analyzed. The play takes place in Thebes in 441 B.C. In the play, Antigone buries her brother, Polyneices, who Creon decreed to not bury. Creon then finds out about what Antigone did and punishes her “even though she claimed” to have done the will of the gods. I will explain how each character was guilty of doing something wrong. Transition, Antigone was put on trial for burying Polyneices, however, Antigone, Creon, and the gods are all guilty of doing some type
The criminal trial process is an interesting process that takes place in Courtrooms all across the United States and throughout the globe. This study intends to set out the various steps in the criminal trial process in the American justice system. A trial is described as a "legal forum for resolving individual disputes, and in the case of a criminal charge, it is a means for establishing whether an accused person is legally guilty of an offense. The trial process varies with respect to whether the matter at issue is civil in nature or criminal. In either case, a jury acts as a fact-finding body for the court in assessing information and evidence that is presented by the respective parties in a case. A judge presides over the court and addresses all the legal issues that arise during the trial. A judge also instructs the jury how to apply the facts to the laws that will govern in a given case." In Sophocles’s piece Antigone, this passage “Of course I did. It wasn't Zeus.... I've been accused of folly by a fool." (499-524) brings about several themes which include death, laws and justice. Antigone’s belief in law is different from that of Creon’s and therefore goes against him by accepting any punishment that should come.
The argument between the law of the state and the law of the gods, or religious, is mentioned many times throughout the story. Creon refers to Antigone's brother as one who betrayed his city and he upholds an order for Thebes, forbidding Antigone's brother to be buried. Antigone refers to burying her brother as a moral responsibility. Creon is astonished when he finds that she has disobeyed his
The term “Covert Action” brings with it a connotation of shadowy figures wrapped in secrecy and intrigue. It also brings with it a substantial amount of moral questions as to “what is right.” The use of covert action has been widely publicized since the early seventies, but trying to find out the truth to these events has been difficult to say the least. What is even more difficult, is historically recording these events into categories of successes or failures. These operations are difficult to dissect because of their secrecy and although events have been recorded, some facts simply aren’t apparent. This paper will seek to identify the complex issues associated with covert operations.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, thank you for taking part in today’s case. The decision made today will be extremely crucial, and I trust that you will all make a decision for the best of everyone. My client Antigone has been charged with treason against the city of Thebes. The prosecution states Antigone knowingly defied the king’s order, and put Thebes in great danger of civil unrest for her own gain. However, Antigone did not bury her brother to defy the law, but to show affection to her brother, as he was her only brother and had a significant role in her life. Furthermore, the townspeople themselves believe my client is innocent! Last but not least, Antigone chose to please the gods, who have more power than the king, meaning her actions were reasonable at the least. People of the jury, I can assure you Antigone did not commit treason, sought no personal gain in her actions, and must be acquitted from this unreasonable criminal charge.
