The following is a case study of a male client, Dexter, suffering from antisocial personality disorder (psychopath), a chronic mental condition in which a person's ways of thinking, perceiving situations and relating to others are dysfunctional — and destructive ("Antisocial personality disorder", 2015). One result of antisocial personality disorder is the person has no regard for right and wrong and they usually disregard the rights and feelings of others. The client was diagnosed and given an assessment with the goal of managing his symptoms. Through a process of discovery, the client's history finally revealed that the disorder was actually a result of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by a past experience. People with PTSD often fear re-experiencing a traumatic event and sometimes are unable to remember certain aspects. However, through psychotherapy and medication, this client illustrates a successful management of his symptoms.

Dexter in the story started off as a very young boy who worked as a caddy at a golf course. There he met Miss Jones for the very first time. Judy Jones was a beautiful, young woman who came from a glittery family, but was also very cunning with her “preposterous smile” . Dexter was very
First it is necessary to understand the psychology of serial killer. Serial killers are either labeled as a psychopath or labeled as having anti-social personality disorder. A quality anti-personality disorder which Dexter has is “Being able to act witty and charming. (NIH.com)” Dexter is witty in the sense that he knows how to not get caught and he has found a way to fit into society without anyone suspecting him has a killer, Dexter is also charming and this is portrayed in the series since his boss at the Miami Police Department clearly has a crush on him. “Break the law repeatedly. (NIH.com)” is yet another characteristic, this is also shown in Dexter. When stalking his potential victims Dexter constantly breaks
Antisocial personality disorder is a disregard for others rights and violating theses rights. This disorder starts as a child to people who carry this disorder portray the characteristics of irritability, aggressiveness, lack of remorse, and irresponsibility. A psychopath falls under the umbrella of antisocial personality disorders. A psychopath is a person with a personality disorders which is inherited from their parents at birth. Flashes of these inherited factors show and happen in the child upbringing this includes torture animals at a young age, playing weird dark games as a kid, or ripping heads of toys. A perfect example of a Psychopath is Edmund Kemper. A man who showed his psychopath tendencies at a young age that grew into to him becoming a serial killer.
Jeffrey Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 to parents Lionel and Joyce Dahmer (Davis, 1998). While living in his birthplace of Wisconsin, Dahmer was described by his father to be “’[v]ery exuberant, he liked to wrestle, liked to run around, ham it up for the camera and he liked to play with kids and get together with them’” (Harris, 1996). As Dahmer entered adolescence, his father earned a Ph.D. in chemistry and the family began to move around Ohio (National Center for Crisis Management, n.d.). After the move, his parents fought often and eventually divorced. During this period, Dahmer became “withdrawn and uncommunicative” (Jeffrey Dahmer, 2017) and
Although Dexter begins the series showing us that he lives in a façade attempting to cover up his dark side there is a part of him that is loving and caring. We see this side of him throughout interactions between his children, wife, sister, and rare friends. Dexter gets into a romanticized relationship with his wife at first as a cover up to seem a little normal, but he starts to grow feelings for her and gets attached to their children. As Katy Waldman from Slate states, Dexter shows real affections to their children. It actually surprises him how much he has progressed as a person. For example as Mark Lasswell states in his “Such a Nice Boy Serial Killer” article, “To the consternation of the whimpering man, Morgan says cheerfully: ‘I’ve been going through some changes myself lately. I’m getting married and have a baby on the way. Me!’” Dexter as a brother cares for his sister and protects her at all costs, they have their sibling
Living in Miami, Dexter tell his story of how he must fake his emotions and interactions with others. Dexter has two different kinds of personality. The one he shows everyone, a helpful, smart, and hardworking man. These traits help him seem normal to everyone around him and doesn’t make people suspicious. The side of him he doesn’t show anyone is the very secretive, observant, meticulous. These traits help Dexter make sure he has the right person and understands his surrounding just in case he runs into any
In conclusion the desire for love and the desire for wealth is not always the key to happiness. In Dexter's case his desire or dream of love caused his nothing but misery and a broken heart.
The Dexter T.V. show is about a blood splatter pattern analyst for Miami Metro Police Department who also accompany of an undisclosed serial killer. Hunting down criminals who
The theme that is present in each story deals with the inner conflict each man is trying to come to terms with. For Dexter,
Lastly, the actual storyline is not cliché. Dexter is addicting and chilling, while keeping the viewer guessing. It is one of these shows that is very hard to solve. It keeps the audience interested and always leaves the ending with a significant event, creating a need to watch more. The plot is set up uniquely, keeping the viewer interested within each episode. The climax is usually at the end, in order to persuade into ‘sticking’ around for more. It is a difficult accomplishment to draw the audience into loving a serial killer. But Dexter is one of a few shows that does not thrust or force this love towards him upon the audience.
Antisocial personality disorder is one of the hardest mental disorders to treat. Treatment is long term and may better the situation but the disorder will not be cured. It is also very rare for an individual with ASPD to seek help for themselves due to their denial of symptoms. Oftentimes, help is only sought if the individual is in legal
“I remember it like it was yesterday, Dexter had come home from terrorizing children, he started talking about this girl he saw but she wasn't one of us…… SHE WAS A HUMAN!”
Meet Dexter! This 2 year old sweetheart was found roaming the town of Groveland in a starved state. Since he has been in a foster home his playful and energetic personality have come to light. This sweet-natured lad minds his manners in the house and likes riding shotgun in the car. Dexter is a smart, friendly and trusting boy who would excel in obedience training due to his eagerness to learn. Dexter never lost his faith in people and he is hoping for a home to call his own.
Dexter idolizes those wealthy men and does everything possible to resemble rich men. For example, he asks the best tailor in America to make a suit for him. In sum, he becomes addicted to social prestige since he believes that happiness lies in it.
He was an outsider, partially because of his traumatic childhood transforming him into an emotionless human, but also, by living by the Code of Harry to control his urges. Another of Harry’s lessons was stay neat, dress nicely, avoid attention (Lindsay, 97). Avoiding attention and being an outsider helped Dexter to hide his identity of being a superhero and not allowing other people to think something was up with him. He was able to kill and protect Miami without the police knowing he was actually a serial killer while showing no emotions and faking human interactions. Showing no emotions and faking human interactions in society “represents his “burden,” explicitly, but at the same time his gift, the thing that enables him to catch criminals (Muir, 8). In other words, Dexter is able to fake acting like an emotional human but still be able to use “his gift,” to kill. So without this characteristic of being an outsider, Dexter would not be able to perform his gift of being a secret serial killer. Being an outsider keeps the attention away from Dexter, thus allowing him to fight evil and be a superhero.
