Living in today’s society can be very stressful. There always seems to be someone to impress, a deadline to meet, or even everyday social situations that can cause major stress in a person’s life. If not dealt with properly this stress can evolve into a monstrous anxiety problem. Anxiety has a way of bringing down even the strongest of people. Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the United States. Anxiety Disorders Association of America or the AADA has done tests that show 18.1% of people eight-teen or older have anxiety issues. This is roughly forty million people living with this mind crippling illness. Anxiety, if not treated properly, can affect a person’s social life, professional career, and may even lead to depression.
What separates everyday anxious feelings from anxiety disorders is the interference the disorder can cause in your day-to-day life. For instance, everyone may feel somewhat anxious in certain social situations because of the fear of being embarrassed. When one has difficulty coping with those anxious feelings, though, is when one may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety is defined as the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when you feel threatened, under pressure, or are facing a stressful situation. A little bit of anxiety can actually help a person stay attentive and on track. If we did not feel a certain level of pressure at a job or school, then perhaps we wouldn’t care about it as much. We might slack or leave a few loose ends that may cause us to fall behind. A little bit is actually beneficial, but unfortunately there are people who have to deal with anxiety as part of a mental illness or disorder. What is an anxiety disorder?- Anxiety is “a mental health disorder characterized by feelings of worry or fear that are strong enough to interfere with one's daily activities...” Anxiety disorders involve more than temporary fear or worry. There are numerous disorders involving anxiety, which includes: social phobia, panic disorder, separation anxiety disorder, etc.
Some people may say that anxiety isn't the main cause of people not wanting to accomplish things or why they have bad health issues. They say it could also be depression or how they are living their life outside of the public.
