The different types of formatting I had to learn in college is getting out of hand. The all of the different formats are loosely connected. The MLA format and endnotes are very similar in that they are found at end of a paper, but you do not give put the author last name and page number after it. I choose to use footnotes, because my laptop cannot decide what it wants to do. Another difference is the lack of putting your last name before the page number in the header, but is similar is APA Format. With the self-assessment in this week’s reading I had to really become brutally honest with myself. In order to know where you are in life, it is helpful to self-assess yourself (Bethel University, 2014). At first, I found myself quickly answering them and when I finished I went back through to make sure that I did not miss anything. While going back through them I found that I was not being completely honest with myself. I had to redo some questions but I was happy with the results. This assessment made me open my eyes to little things that I have not noticed before, which was very helpful.

I intend to pursue a degree in the medical field. Upon undertaking a job in the medical field, numerous college professors will require you to grasp how to write APA style. APA stands for the American Physiological Association and is generally used in social sciences. All through during high school MLA has been stressed as the major style of writing, assuming APA will be difficult to write is outside of my jurisdiction. MLA and APA have several similarities. Both text styles are double spaced, must include either a “references” or “work cited” page, and anything that is not original must be cited. The audience, who is reading this paper or listening from the writer, allows them to focus on your thoughts and ideas. Plus this format shows that you are aware of the audience and will establish your credibility. With style guidelines, this type of format helps you get your point of view across and able to conveyed your research in a concise writing style. The writer can control on how the readers receive the information and at all times to avoid bias (Gorman, 2014.) Just remember to use plain language and do not use any kind of schemes or devices in your paper.

The following paper will increase ones knowledge on academic style writing and why APA format is used. Academic style is used everywhere however, why do we use this form of writing, and why do we use APA format in writing these papers. Style is a reflection of one’s inner self. It allows our feelings, thoughts and perceptions to speak for each of us. But, when it comes to conveying information a standardized style is needed. There are different standardized styles that are in use but during this essay we will look at the style known as APA created in 1929 and published by the American Psychological Association (Bethel, 2014).

The APA format is the official style of the American Psychological Association; in other word it is the most common cited source used in psychology, education and social science based on the article: APA format: 12 basic rules. Even if this format seems to be a littler complicate because of all the process that need to be done, it is absolutely beneficiary for the writer as well as for the reader to present and subtract the idea from the paper.

Most universities in the world use a style manual to establish the rules that should be applied for writing documents or publishing research studies on different disciplines. The purpose of these style manuals is to ensure consistency standardizing the writing style, and additionally, to make easier the task of locating references, citations, and bibliographies, for the reader. Some of the most used style manuals for academic papers are MLA, Chicago, Harvard, Turabian and APA. APA style is a widely used standard, developed by social and behavioral scientist from American Psychologist Association to standardize scientific writing.

It is important to give credit where credit is due. I mentioned this because it is crucial that when you research you should always give credit to the authors work and not use it as your own. To do this, you must use APA style when citing any direct quotes or paraphrasing. This is why APA style was created in 1929 by phycologists and business managers. (Bethel University, 2014, p. 10)

MLA formatting is a concept I learned in English where you type papers in a very formal way that makes the paper more organized and professional. In fact, a paper that looks very organized is going to interest a person to read it because they will not have to look around for scattered information. An essay typed out in MLA format is going to receive a better grade or comment over an essay that is not in the format. MLA format helped me improve by writing nice looking, and well organized papers. Therefore, MLA format is very helpful and it has helped me throughout my semester in English 125.

APA style writing recommends using 12 point, Times New Roman font for the paper. If another type of font is used it should be able to be easily read by the reader. The essay should always be typed on standard 8 ½” by 11” paper with 1 inch margins on each side. A title page should have the title of the paper, the author’s name, and the university the writer is attending. Pages number should also be in the top right corner of the essay for easy handling. Also the use of a running head can be placed in the header of the paper.

When most students sit down to write a research papers they commonly use two styles of writing, APA and MLA. Modern Language Associations or commonly known as, MLA, is used when writing liberal arts papers. When the paper is subjected around social sciences, the American Psychological Association or APA is style of writing used. There is specific format and many guidelines a student must follow when writing their paper in an APA format.

Although some research papers would take on different layouts depending on the nature of the research or class and/or advisors’ requirements; an APA style would be genuinely the most preferred and common format for scientific papers.
