When you write an essay, you have to use a format. Formats help you have a better looking paper. Some of these formats are called, APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, and AMA. But the ones I will focus on is APA and MLA. APA and MLA are close and different in a few ways. APA, American Psychological Association, style is used when you write a psychology, education, and other social science paper. APA style is a format for academic documents such as journal articles and books. APA style is most commonly used to site sources within the social sciences. This style is a formal way of writing an official document. The essay should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5"x 11") with 1" margins on all sides. The essay should use a clear font that is readable. APA recommends using 12 PT and Times New Roman font. The essay also includes a page header at the top of every page. To create a page header, insert page numbers flush right, then type “title of your page" in the header flush left using all capital letters. The different types of formatting I had to learn in college is getting out of hand. The all of the different formats are loosely connected. The MLA format and endnotes are very similar in that they are found at end of a paper, but you do not give put the author last name and page number after it. I choose to use footnotes, because my laptop cannot decide what it wants to do. Another difference is the lack of putting your last name before the page number in the header, but is similar is APA Format. With the self-assessment in this week’s reading I had to really become brutally honest with myself. In order to know where you are in life, it is helpful to self-assess yourself (Bethel University, 2014). At first, I found myself quickly answering them and when I finished I went back through to make sure that I did not miss anything. While going back through them I found that I was not being completely honest with myself. I had to redo some questions but I was happy with the results. This assessment made me open my eyes to little things that I have not noticed before, which was very helpful.
I intend to pursue a degree in the medical field. Upon undertaking a job in the medical field, numerous college professors will require you to grasp how to write APA style. APA stands for the American Physiological Association and is generally used in social sciences. All through during high school MLA has been stressed as the major style of writing, assuming APA will be difficult to write is outside of my jurisdiction. MLA and APA have several similarities. Both text styles are double spaced, must include either a “references” or “work cited” page, and anything that is not original must be cited. With style guidelines, this type of format helps you get your point of view across and able to conveyed your research in a concise writing style. There are different standardized styles that are in use but during this essay we will look at the style known as APA created in 1929 and published by the American Psychological Association (Bethel, 2014).
The APA format is the official style of the American Psychological Association; in other word it is the most common cited source used in psychology, education and social science based on the article: APA format: 12 basic rules. It is important to give credit where credit is due. I mentioned this because it is crucial that when you research you should always give credit to the authors work and not use it as your own. MLA formatting is a concept I learned in English where you type papers in a very formal way that makes the paper more organized and professional. In fact, a paper that looks very organized is going to interest a person to read it because they will not have to look around for scattered information. An essay typed out in MLA format is going to receive a better grade or comment over an essay that is not in the format. MLA format helped me improve by writing nice looking, and well organized papers. Therefore, MLA format is very helpful and it has helped me throughout my semester in English 125.
APA style writing recommends using 12 point, Times New Roman font for the paper. If another type of font is used it should be able to be easily read by the reader.
