The past few years I have had many unique opportunities and made many different decisions on the direction my life is taking. I have had multiple goals and challenges and where I am today has been formed with factors I did not always anticipate. For the last few years, I have worked in management, but before that I worked a variety of jobs. The different jobs I have worked have provided insight as to where I am now and how I would like to spend the remainder of my life.
I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.
Staring down at the baby; my baby in his little plastic box, I was overcome by a fear I had never felt before. I would later find out that his box was called and isolate, a special bed for premature babies. His eyes were covered with gauze, he had a tube in his nose that was assisting his breathing, and he was so small. Awestruck, I watched his slight movements. His mouth moved as if he was searching for something. His tiny hands grasped for something to hold on to. I slowly reached my finger to his hand and he clutched it with all of his little might. His grasp sent shock waves of love through my body that I had never experienced in my life. I was a mother.
am at a pivotal moment and desire to start the next chapter of my life. There are three main reasons for me to
My long term goal is to obtain a position at a hospital as Nurse Practitioner.
I have danced around with the many options in the medical field since high school, from paramedic to forensic pathologist and everything in between. I decided on medical assisting because I see it as a step towards other possibilities, a foot in the door to see what I enjoy and will want to do in the future. Medical Assistance have a wide working spectrum and are in many medical areas such as a family clinic, pediatrics, and plastic surgery. Because my goal is a forensic pathologist or autopsy assistant I want to be a medical assistant in plastic or general surgery because I believe it will be a wonderful step towards my goal. As a medical assistant you are held to a high standard of professionalism because the situations you will be working
Considering a career in nursing? It is a career that lets you see a different side of people. Doing the best you can to turn the worst day of people's lives into the best. It is a career that not only benefits you as a nurse but it benefits your family as well. You learn as a nurse to treat everyone the same, look at everyone the same, and to love everyone physically and emotionally the same. You learn to understand what people are trying to express to you, whether that's verbal, physically, or mentally. Nursing is a career that is ever-changing and enlarging it is the field of knowledge.
“We need to transfer her to the ICU”, said the attending while holding a nebulizer mask up to the infant’s face. It was organized chaos at its finest-- EKGs, X-rays, and labs were being drawn almost instantaneously. My 5-month-old patient 's respirations had become labored and needed care more advanced than we could perform on the inpatient cardiology unit. As the bedside nurse, I was responsible for communicating my assessment findings and concerns about the patient to the team.
Entering the healthcare profession comes with great responsibilities and many new experiences and challenges that most have never faced before. With any new job, whether it be a Doctor or a grocery store clerk, some type of change is required in us. With a new job, we are faced with new people, new rules, and new expectations. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to adjust to all the “new” and it can become overwhelming. As humans, it’s easy for us to fall into certain patterns or habits in which we find it truly hard to break from. For example, hitting the snooze button every morning, even though I specifically make notes to myself to NOT HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON. I personally feel that the job I chose to pursue is a very important one and I need to make some lifestyle changes in order to be the best I can be. Among other things, I’m mainly working to improve my promptness as well as my collaborating skills, my overall attitude, dependability, and how I can better prepare myself.
Finally, the day that I have been waiting for along time is here; I will start my career. I need to evaluate carefully each opportunity to make the right decision.
Firstly, I would like to thank you for sharing with us your career path and your thoughts.
Healthcare has many different areas one can go into if interested in this field. I have chosen two that have always been an interest to me; Nursing (particularly registered nursing) and an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). Both jobs are very demanding and extremely important. Both are respected jobs and require a tremendous amount of caring for others.
Failure is not an option, but giving up is. Coming from a family of five, my three brothers and I were raised by a single mother, I saw the struggles she went through growing up. However, she did not give up and for this reason, she is my biggest role model, inspiration, and motivation. My parents did not get an education higher than middle school. My mother being single and without a high school education was difficult, because a great deal of jobs required them. Consequently, when she did get a job, she usually didn’t get full benefits. At times one of my siblings or I would need to see a doctor, but without insurance it was expensive and difficult to find a provider. This opened my eyes to examine how we were not the only ones struggling to get decent
The timeline below illustrates what I have planned my future and hope it would turn out in such a
One of the crucial moments in my life was the decision I had to take; as to what I was going to do next in life. Having completed my Advanced Level in 2013, I realized that it was not the end of my career as a student. I needed strong academic foundation along with other soft skills to meet the challenges and survive in this commercial world as a successful individual. In view of these thoughts, I was unable to make a firm decision as to what my career direction would be. After a month or so of various discussions with my parents, friends and other learned people I was able to reason out the best choice for me.
