Appointed Place of Duty 1

I have held multiple positions within the United States Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol, including the position of First Sergeant of the Valkyrie Cadet Squadron. My job was to provide a dedicated focal point for all readiness, to watch the health of cadets, boost the morale, ensure that operations flowed smoothly, and make sure the orders of the commander were carried out by the support staff. After nine months of being a First Sergeant, I was promoted to be the Executive Officer, which is the third in command of the 52-cadet squadron. Scheduling the work day and being accountable for each one of your soldiers is one of the most important duties any leader in the Army has from a sergeant major all the way down to squad or team leader positions. With that being said, I cannot express enough that being at the right place at the right time is extremely essential to the defense of the entire United States of America and extremely essential to mission readiness and being able to complete the mission promptly. I have learned that the army is all about making the right choices and doing the right thing so if anything makes sure that you are always doing what is right. I for one have been late a few times and now I have to make sure that I take care of that so that I can keep my rank and not lose anything. The right thing for me to do is I will make sure that I have an alarm clock set for the time I need to be up and to better myself to get up as soon as it goes off. Then I will make sure that I am getting a good amount of sleep so that I can get up on time and not be late or dragging while I am at work. I have done so well I just need to be more attentive in what I am doing and make sure that I have my things in order and that I am prepared for everything that comes my way. It’s time to set aside the differences have against me and be a leader by example if people see me showing up whenever they will do the same thing. So now I have to make sure that I lead by example and not by sub standards because in the long wrong I will be in charge of soldiers and don’t want them to think that they can just show up whenever or talk to NCO’S any way they want. Which brings me to my last part respect in order for soldiers to want to respect anybody you have to show that you are contributing to the work that is going and not just sitting there

What this means to me reading up on this is that i need to stop worrying so much about performing physically and expecting it to carry me through my military career and start becoming proficient in all areas and applying myself in areas that might not mean so much to me, or that i don't understand. Also i think i've learned that i need to stop relying on my own knowledge and start becoming a sponge to those who have been in longer than i, and when i am told to do something take it or not to do something to take it to heart and not do it again because it not only comes with punishment but also loss of credibility of those who are in charge of me. Credibility and trust are essential when working with a team of men like we do everyday, so i am going to try my best to be the best and most professional soldier i can be even when no one is looking.

The key to all of teamwork, leading, and following is adhering to the instructions of those appointed over you which brings me to my next point. As soldiers we are drilled almost everyday to listen to commanders, NCO's and basically everyone higher in rank than us or in some cases people that have more time in service. We are taught discipline from day one in basic training when we hit the ground the first time doing pushups to the last right face in the last ceremony before we see our families. Discipline is crucial to following orders effectively, without it soldiers would not react fast enough to what is being said or would simply not care enough about the task at hand to perform it, weakening the team it

Also you want to use this duty in your personal life. It shows people that youre very dependable. This is not only a quality we use as soldiers, but as civilans as well. Being late is not only unacceptable in the army, but it is unacceptable anywhere. This should be the easiest task of being a soldier. The army has several ways to correct this issue if it is a continuous problem. For example you are told to be at work at 0900 work call, you are supposed to be there at 0850. But, you may ask, how does me not being at 0630 formation on Fort Hood for PT put other people’s lives in danger? Well, it doesn’t. But, making being on time, or even a bit early, a habit can help when you eventually do end up down range and you need to be on time for a mission. Civilians are also expected to be at their right place at the right time. The only difference is being on time is on time in the civilian world. If work is at 10:00 then as long as it’s not 10:01, then you are in the clear. Showing people you can be on time not only shows you have discipline, but you respect for your superior leaders. Punctuality shows that you are responsible, trustworthy and can follow directions. Punctuality isn't just an order that the Army requires, but also a good personal trait that is a reflection of a person’s character, it shows that you have personal integrity and self-discipline. While some of us are occasionally late due to circumstances beyond our control, habitual tardiness shows a lack of respect for other people and their time. If someone is late continually that shows that they more than likely do not care about what their NCO tells them. Nobody wants to depend on a person that can’t even simply show up for a formation that is held every day at the same time and place. In today's army, being on time can be a paramount activity. Consequences for not showing up on time can be disasterous. In a normal job, you get up, go to work, and come home, and that is the limit of the level of involvement. The army is not one of those jobs. In the army, we are constantly training our mind and bodies for a combat environment. In such an environment, the level of involvement must be much higher. It is understood that any mistake, however seemingly small can have extreme consequences. Among those consequences are situations which can lead to soldiers loosing their lives.

Accountability is very important in the Army. Accountability is taking responsibility for your actions and your items. By meaning what you say, saying what you mean, and doing what you say, when you say you will do it. By keeping track of all my items and equipment I can always be ready for anything that is needed of me by my country, my superiors, or other servicemen. Being accountable means being dependable. Where my country, my superiors and fellow servicemen can count on me in any situation. to know I will be there to do what is necessary. Taking responsibility for your own actions and equipment is what keeps things running smoothly. And keeps things from turning into utter chaos. Being in

Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that's why the team member should make sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all times. The Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the Army expects to know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible for equipment in the Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs will be met. If someone is accountable, you can trust that they will do what they claimed. Without accountability you would not be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job for you and other members of the team, or even show up on time to an important event ,or formation. It is important because it holds each and everyone accountability for his or her actions.Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for ones actions. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than“willingness” while you have to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are the ones that jeopardize the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from the bottom up. Top down and laterally everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even when no one else is looking. This is practiced at your home base where everyone is assigned

Through my military career I have been told the importance of mission readiness and how much of an impact it can have on the unit if one soldier is not up to standard. The other solders must not only continue working on the load they have but also pic up my slack. Not being fully mission capable waste time and energy of my peers, my NCOs and the officers in my unit. I must do better as a soldier I am A specialist looking to go to the promotion board in January but I made a private mistake. Mission readiness comes down to discipline and prioritizing which I will explain in this essay. Discipline and standards define what it means to be an Army professional.

When I went on mobilization to Fort Lewis, Washington and left my son in the care of my parents, I thought my parental duties would be set aside until I returned home. Unfortunately, the soldiers of 351st Ordnance Company would prove me wrong with their excessive alcohol consumption, commonly term “binge drinking,” and destructive behaviors. I would then spend the next year sharing the responsibility with four other junior noncommission officers in the task of taking care of soldiers. Despite the efforts of myself and the others we were not fully prepared to handle some of the outrageous events and lack of engagement from the leadership that would challenge us during the tour. My abilities as a junior noncommission officer and the understanding of leadership were redefined and I learned exactly what it meant to ensure soldiers have proper guidance, leadership, positive morale, and well-being.

The actions that i made also affect's my family in many ways also. Not only if i were to die and leave them with nothing but the bills for my funeral and death but also the pride that I have in my family and in my name. My family has been in the military as far back as anyone can remember. My Father is in the Navy along with his two brothers my Uncle Pat and my Uncle Todd, My Uncles Mitch is retired now from the Army along with my Moms father, my Grandfather and my Dad's Father was in the Marines. I also have a Great Uncle who served in World War II in the Army as a bottom hatch gunner in a B-17 bomber, so the standards that my family holds me to and the expectations they have are held high and I plan to uphold the honor and high expectations that my family deserves and entrust me with by being and setting the standards that a soldier in the United States Army should be held accountable to. In turn not to only lose the trust and responsibility that not only my Non Commissioned Officers and chain of command have with me but also to lose my families trust and expectations would be the most costly, demeaning and catastrophic punishment of them all. Along with losing the trust and expectations of my Non Commissioned Officers, chain of command and my family I would also put my First Sergeant in a bad spot that he does not deserve. The principal reason for this essay is since I did not follow out proper orders and was not at the right place of duty for PT/Accountability formation at the appropriate time. Though there was a miscommunication, granted on my half, there's nonetheless no excuse for me to miss a formation. I desire to be a great soldier and I desire to excel inside military. The first step I need to put into action is often making sure I am at the appropriate place of duty at the proper time or preferably with time to spare. This can be a simple task that's easy and painless to ensure, and it'll be accomplished.
