Most people would agree that teachers are educated professionals much like attorneys and physicians. However, many of these same people think it is not necessary for teachers' wages to be quite as substantial as the wages of doctors and lawyers because teachers are not asked to attend quite as much school. Teachers may not need to be as highly educated as physicians or attorneys, but they do have to complete a fair amount of education in order to earn and maintain a teaching license. Most teaching programs in colleges and universities are difficult to complete in less than five years. Much like physicians and attorneys, public school teachers are required to take an exam in order to receive the necessary license to practice their profession. Teachers must also continue to attend classes in order to maintain their certifications. More important, there are several careers that require less formal education than teaching, and these careers tend to pay more substantial salaries than public school teachers earn. Most of the new performances pay laws and union contracts measure “effectiveness,” at least in part, by looking at the students’ test scores from one year to the next. One test score cannot paint a full picture of a student's accomplishment. Most teachers will report that a test will only show part of the picture. In Washington D.C. a group of teachers in the area tried to force the NEA (national education system) to put forward this idea by not accepting a tenure benefit but their plan to do so was quickly shut down by the NEA. The NEA mainly rejects the idea because they feel that people are putting the teachers before the teaching of the children and the education system. The NEA, being such a powerful program is a major obstacle for those looking to raise teachers salaries (annual adjustment).
Furthermore, additional compensation would not be received by the teachers. Statistics shown by the USA’s “Teacher Inquiry” showed that sixty-three percent of teachers state that they don’t gross sufficient money to meet their needs. Mrs. Glad Davis, receiver of the teacher of the year award stated on Channel 12 News, “If teaching was my only job, I wouldn’t be able to take care of my present needs.” Let’s face it, money makes the world go around. Everyone needs food, water, clothing, shelter and just a little more. In short, Teachers do a lot for students during the school year and it would be very unfair for them to not receive any additional compensation during the course of a year round school year.
I agree with your comment that teachers are not being paid enough for the demands that are now placed upon them. With prices all around us constantly increasing, it is sad that teachers sometimes have to take on a second job to make ends meet.
Most important of all is the wags teachers receive at the end of the month. It does not even cover the light bill much less food, water, telephone and taxes. Teachers would have to nibble at their money in order to survive and I certainly would not want to be like that, and with all the shouting and screeming I would have to hear during the day my blood pressure might just fly straight up and send me to my grave, so that is why I would not like to become a teacher.

If anything, teachers deserve to make much more than those “other professions”. Even though teacher salary varies throughout the country, it is overall too low bringing to life an issue that needs to be recognized as an important one and must be properly addressed in order to improve several aspects of schooling (Nir) (See Fig. 1).
