It was November 2013. “I don’t want to go to High School in Bridgeport.” I remember telling my mom. My mom then said, “Wherever you go, you’re determined to succeed.”I didn’t want to be any average Bridgeport girl, I wanted to be more than that. I didn’t want to be a product of my environment or the system that was designed to fail me, so I knew the only way out for me was quality education. Bridgeport is one of the biggest cities in Connecticut yet we have one of the highest crime, poverty, and unemployment rates As a city we are already doing poorly and the education system is a whole other story. In a Bridgeport high school the students are at a very high disadvantage compared to surrounding high schools. The city’s budget cuts have been increasing steadily over the years from all the schools in the city. From art programs to music to even sports programs.Years leading up to my graduation I saw programs I enjoyed participating in slowly disappearing. It was the same thing over and over …show more content…
I knew taking the train would also be a sacrifice that I'd have to make that other high school students wouldn't have to. I'd have to wake up at the crack of dawn (5:30 AM) to get ready to take the train to Norwalk. Norwalk and Bridgeport are 2 totally different worlds. On the train you see and interact with different people, there might even be times where you have to sit next to a total stranger. This sacrifice would also come with benefits. Some of these benefits could be a power nap on the train, extra time to study and or do homework, and just enjoy the scenery. The train ride would represent the bridge that connects me to my goals. Each stop is a new obstacle that I face living in Bridgeport whether that's a shooting, or robbing or even a kid napping. When I get to South Norwalk I reach my goal. I knew going to and from to school would be a journey, but like Odysseus I'm on a
Lincoln High School, which is located in a low-income neighborhood in San Diego, was a rebuilt after 50 years of failing to educate children. Rebuilding the high school was the answer the community had been looking for they were hopeful. Before the rebuild most students who attended Lincoln did not meet the standards for their grade-level, few graduated and even fewer went go on to college. After years of suffering and neglect there was little doubt That Lincoln High School deserved the $129 million it received from the city to rebuild. But was rebuilding the school the solution for Lincoln High School 's education problem? First we’ll examine, How the problem started, the decision making steps and if the plan was successful.
Washington DC is the capital of the United States of America and the home of the president´s country, it has the majority of the political scene but contrary to other opinions, there are others scenes that we can appreciate, for example, culture, architecture, entertaining, and restaurants.
Growing up in Chicago, I attended a neighborhood school from preschool through first grade. Although it was an exceptional school for elementary kids, the education for middle school and high school students was not as adequate. Seeking a better place to raise their children, my parents were faced with a tough choice. When I was in 2nd grade, our family made the decision to move to the suburbs. On July 3rd, we all packed into our Honda minivan and drove 45 minutes to a new home in the town of Winnetka. Within my first year at Crow Island, my new school, I learned so many new things. I started playing the violin and speaking Spanish, neither of which were offered at my old school. I met my best friends that I'm still close with now. Over the
In the writing Fremont High School by Jonathan Kozol he discusses the reality of urban schools and how they are unable to obtain the proper education. At Fremont High School children are not always able to eat during their lunch period, the proper education needed for college is not obtained, the school reflects institutional discrimination, and the building is overcrowded limiting course offerings for children.
America’s school system and student population remains segregated, by race and class. The inequalities that exist in schools today result from more than just poorly managed schools; they reflect the racial and socioeconomic inequities of society as a whole. Most of the problems of schools boil down to either racism in and outside the school or financial disparity between wealthy and poor school districts. Because schools receive funding through local property taxes, low-income communities start at an economic disadvantage. Less funding means fewer resources, lower quality instruction and curricula, and little to no community involvement. Even when low-income schools manage to find adequate funding, the money doesn’t solve all the school’s
At Hazelwood High School, they do things differently than at my school. At Hazelwood, most of the people worry about themselves and nobody else. Most of the school doesn’t get good grades and the school does not do anything about it. One day in English class Andy walked out when they were reading Macbeth because it was too emotional for Andy to handle. His friends were concerned and told the school counselor. They said, “But… but… it seems like… like… he needs help or somethin’.” Then the counselor said, “Well, I probably shouldn’t tell you boys this, but he is getting some outside counseling… So you boys can relax and be assured that he is getting whatever help he needs”(100). At Harrisburg High School, if someone had an issue like that, the counselors and teachers would be concerned, even if the person was getting outside help. Another thing about education that is different than mine is the school. In Ronda’s English homework, she wrote, “Our school building must have been built about a million years ago, because it was brown and tall and raggedy-looking, but it fit right in with the rest of the day”(16). At my high school, we are very fortunate to have a very new building to learn inside of. At Hazelwood High, they were not fortunate enough to have a new high school be built. Culture and education are very important pieces of people’s
For my entire life of schooling, both my parents and I would agree that I constantly complained about the educational systems in which I was enrolled. But when I actually take the time to think about everything I have been through, I realize that I have indeed had an excellent education. My schooling was full of opportunities and experiences, all of which contributed to the person I am today; adequate education has been an indispensable facet of my being. Sadly, not everyone has had this same privilege. And now as a college student, I am becoming even more aware of this sad fact. Looking around me in such a diverse city as Chicago, I find myself being more and more grateful. When I read Jonathan Kozol's Fremont High School, this these
I think what would make Botetourt County a better community is more affordable housing And lower property tax. Firstly It would be beneficial because more and more of Botetourt residents have had to move out because of increased property value and tax so if there was more affordable housing they would be able to stay, secondly more jobs would be created, lastly more people might move into botetourt because housing is cheaper.
Can you imagine ever performing on Broadway? Let me go a step further and ask if you could ever imagine performing in the Broadway show Chicago? To feel the excitement of performing for the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Broadway shows may not be for everyone, but it truly says something when a show is completely sold out and not one single person is left sitting down at the end of the play.
During the last couple of years, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have gone through many difficulties; ranging from teacher strikes to low funding, which has tremendously taken a toll on the students attending these schools. The Illinois Policy Institute, which writes to inform the public of issues affecting Illinois states, “Seventy-five percent of students at the lowest-performing elementary schools failed to meet standards on state exams. More than 20 percent of these students scored in the lowest category in reading, meaning they have a difficult time determining the main idea of a persuasive essay or the plot of a short story…Students at Chicago’s lowest-performing high schools drop out at nearly 12 times the rate of average Illinois
Every state should’ve been like Longtown in the America 200 years ago because Longtown was a free place for everyone no matter their color. Longtown needs to be taken care of the most because it’s the first town where race and color didn't matter. An article published by Washington Post titled “Ohio town holds rare history:Races mix freely for nearly 200 years” and a youtube video called “Vanishing Act” both explains how a town in Ohio was one of the first places to be free of discrimination. According to Washington Post, a descendant of James Clemens who brought the land for Longtown named Connor Keisser stated that in his childhood memories he used to play with cousins that had different skin colors. Longtown was the first place where there
I participate in a tutoring program for elementary students in Dorchester, an underserved community in Boston. Working with the children has helped me eliminate preconceived ideas that led me to believe schools were bad because the parents did not pay enough attention to their children's educations. I now realize that the problems in education have more to do with the amount of funding that goes into certain schools. Ignorance and distance from reality caused me to believe that struggling neighborhoods inherently produce bad students. I now understand that the problems within the school do not reflect the students’ abilities.
The city of New Haven, Connecticut has been a long-standing settlement. Established officially by Europeans in March of 1638 (Source 3), New Haven has a detailed history of population declines and growth. The territory that is now New Haven was once inhabited by the Native American group the Quinnipiack (Source 6). The accrual of land was easy for the English settlers in this territory due to the conflicts between the Native American groups. The Quinnipiack tribe occupied the area near the harbor and the Mohawks and Pequots occupied the surrounding area and constantly harassed the Quinnipiack. When the English arrived the Quinnipiack traded their land for protection, which the English agreed to immediately. Through the years the settlement of New Haven has grown and declined in population due to different factors including political, economic and many more.
Carolina Flores has had an extraordinary experience at Casco Bay High School. She had a passionate smile as she said, “I would redo my four years here again.” Her journey before a CBHS was different. Her 8th grade year everyone kept telling her only weird go to CBHS or it's a hard school. But her mother didn't wanted her to go to Deering High school because her older sister had a horrible experience at DHS. “My older sister didn't want me to same experience as she did in high school,” Carolina said. But right now she is so grateful and thankful for mother forcing her to go Casco. She learned how to come out of her comfort zone, for example, her biggest millstone was being a dj at her 10th grade year for the Halloween dance.
“One of the worst NFL team is the Seattle Seahawks,” he often said. He is an Arizona Cardinals fan, hated the Seattle Seahawks in his whole life, but lives in Seattle. The funny thing is that he has a Seahawks jersey, but cheering for the Broncos while wearing a Seahawks jersey in Super Bowl forty-eight. However, he was disappointed how Broncos performed in Super Bowl forty-eight. One year after, he watched the Super Bowl again, he was wearing a Cardinals jersey but cheering for the Patriots in Super Bowl forty-nine. In the fourth quarter, he was hopelessness, “are the ‘chickens’ going to win another Super Bowl?” Suddenly, the hopelessness goes away, that interception by Malcolm Butler made him a hero and it became the biggest fail in Super
