In light of recent events, you'd think that people in the United States would be scrambling to put a gun control law in place. But of course not! Conservatives are still stuck on the fact that it's a violation of their rights. I don't know about them, but I think being killed is a worse violation of my rights than not being able to own a gun. This is what I found most interesting this week. From the most recent, in Charleston, to Sandy Hook, to the Aurora theater shooting, mass murders happen unfortunately often in the US. What are we doing about it? Absolutely nothing. Even with the copious amounts of shooting I keep seeming to hear about on the news, our gun control laws remain the same. Funny thing about these shooters is that most of
A CQ Researcher Online article discusses that as more shootings have occurred, “public support for gun control has risen” (Lytle). While a large amount of Americans believe that there need to be stricter laws regarding guns, they are not easily passed. Journalist Sabrina Siddiqui of The Guardian discusses that after the San Bernardino, California shooting, Democrats and Republicans both tried to pass laws “to both strengthen background checks and prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms”, but none of the bills passed (Siddiqui). This is because the majority of Congress is made of Republicans, who typically support the right to bear arms. Many Republicans are coerced into voting against gun control because they receive large amounts of donations from the National Rifle Association, who “planned to increase its spending from $40 million in the 2008 election cycles to as much as $75 million this year” (Lytle). Republicans seem to care more about the votes they get than the lives of many Americans that are at risk of being killed by a
Gun control in the United States has been a hot debate for years. In the year 2015 there were 372 mass shootings in the United States ( (Rienzi, 2016), sparking even more debate. 22% of Americans own firearms (Rienzi, 2016) and firmly believe in the second amendment of the constitution. Surely, an agreement on gun law reform can be met while also protecting the second amendment. Right?
Republicans are eager to shut down this Colorado gun bill. Here’s why their dream could backfire big time.
According to The Second Amendment of the Constitution, the citizens of the United States have the right to own and bear arms, in order to form a well-regulated militia for the security of the states. This right has been discussed for decades as an important issue for the American society, and it has been one of the most controversial issues in the second half of the twentieth century until nowadays. This right germinated with the threat to freedom that the standing army of professional soldiers brought to the Americans. Some argued that the right to bear arms is mainly concerned with self-defense while others argued that this right was implemented to avoid militia disarmament and protect the Free State. This right was
Many of you think that gun control is a good thing, but how good can such an idea really be? The people who know me are well aware that I am a right wing conservative republican and have been for quite some time. I didn’t always have this political stance. Before I began recreational studies in policy, I was a democrat, and at the time I did not know what being a democrat stood for. All I knew was that I should support the democratic party and not the republican party. This opinion changed when I began to actually study politics. My stance on gun control became in line with the beliefs of many conservative figures which is less government control and resultingly more individual freedoms. To achieve this goal of less government and more freedom, we must look at facts. The facts I would like to go over with you prove that gun control is ineffective because of examples of bad gun legislation, the intentions of the second amendment, and the true interpretation of the second amendment. (Intro paragraph=Ethos)
Despite the opposition, gun control laws are in fact, very necessary. Having such laws would reduce death rates. Also, common sense background checks and bans on certain types of guns could save lives.
After Grisez threatened that stranger, he immediately left. Soon after, her neighbors went to a local gun shop and bought each family a pistol. They promise when one family is not at home, others will help watch over their house. If anyone faces an emergency, others will give hands. Grisez 's two sons, Jack and Michael, have now developed a new hobby to watch over their neighbors' houses (Wright).
In Middleton, Idaho a toddler accidentally shot an infant in the face with a loaded handgun Monday afternoon. Investigators say the 10-month-old and 3-year-old were in a vehicle and were temporarily left unattended. Police say the toddler found a loaded handgun in the vehicle and unintentionally fired the weapon on the 10-month-old child’s cheek. While this story is shocking, gun deaths are pretty common. In 2010 unintentional firearm injuries caused the deaths of around 606 people (not including intentional), (kboi2.com). Statistics say that 32,000 deaths are gun-related per year in the United States. Gun control has become an aspect of the political world that is constantly changing based on how gun rights activists and gun control supporters argue and provide for sufficient reasoning for their cause. Two recent ads, one which shows a picture of a gun, and another that uses a picture of two children, one holding a book and the other, holding a gun. Both convey a powerful message, but ultimately the second is more effective, due to its comparison between the importance of safety.
The debate of gun control in America has been argued over dating back to even before the American Revolution. It is such a dominant political topic that it is a key component to presidential races. Gun Control is the debate on whether of not there should be guns, no guns, or guns with types of regulations. Although the right to bear arms is granted in the people of the United States of America’s Constitution, there is still much debate about the issue.
Through the year of 2016, a total of 18 propositions were introduced in 2016. This included the legalization of marijuana, prohibition on single-use plastic bags, and gun control.
In addition to security, the Second Amendment also protects our nation from foreign countries. Most of the US population owns guns, especially to those countries who are not at good terms with us. The aftermath of war is awful Take the French Revolution for example. The absolute monarchy that had ruled for centuries collapsed in a matter of years, only to be replaced by the Reign of Terror, in which even more people were killed! Worst of all, the defenseless peasants and innocent citizens are caught in the center of all this conflict. When militarist countries, such as Germany, expand into other nations, mass execution occurs because the individuals don’t have a means of protecting themselves. If the people were only armed and ready for battle,
As deciding to what topic I would choose to write a research paper on, the choice was quite simple. The major topic of many discussions today are about guns, gun control and how deadly they can be. The question at hand in my book is simple, are guns bad or are people bad? I believe that legal citizens, who can pass a background check with no prior felonies, should be entitled to the right to purchase and obtain a firearm. With that being said, there are quite a few loopholes in the current system. I tend to use the reference of drugs as an example. Drugs are illegal for anyone to purchase, but when an addict wants a fix they always have an ample supply from a local drug dealer. If guns do eventually get banned in the United
In the USA, Americans have right to own guns, and this is for self- protection. However, many people are trying to take over advantage of the law by using guns to apply physical attack on someone. This makes the issues of regulating the access, ownership, and use of guns are paramount importance. The question of whether guns should be controlled touches the core of the country’s national security. Many Americans think that gun control is wrong because guns do not kill people, people do. If a person wants to kill someone, there are millions ways for him to do his dreadful action without guns. Also, guns do provide protections. On the other hand, many others agree that gun control should be enforced. With the widespread all of the incidences of unpurposed mass shootings on the media, several proponents have had to question the existing legal on gun control in the USA. Civilians should be kept away from guns to
People may hear about this and say why doesn’t the United States do that? Well just because a country does something like that doesn’t make it help. Looking at the United Kingdom and Ireland who tried placing gun bans in the country to make things better, but it didn’t. In the United Kingdom, from 1990 until 1996 the homicide rate fluctuated between 10.9 and 13 homicides per million. But once the ban was enacted, homicide numbers rapidly went up to the point there was 18.0 homicides per million people. The British government then flooded the country with 20,000 more cops (14). Another case with something like that happening happened in Ireland. Ireland banned firearms in 1972. The homicide rate was between 0.1 and 0.6 per 100,000 people. Right
A law that interest me is gun laws. I believe as with the constitutional party on the 2nd amendment the right to keep and bear arms, to be able to protect ones self and family. Quote, “We repeat that when guns are illegal, only makes illegal will have them. In such facts or conditions that surround someone, the peaceful citizen’s protection against the criminal would be seriously endanged.” Also with the Libertarians, that want “the right of self defense, as studies show where gun ownership is illegal, residential crimes are higher.” Quote, “a man with a gun in his home is no threat to you if you aren’t breaking into it.”
