Health, benefit, well-being, progress, care, profit, thriving, all words that are synonyms to welfare. Animal welfare has been an agricultural issue for several decades. Animal welfare refers to the physical, emotional, and mental state an animal is in. There are several organization in the United States along with other corporations around the world that have the same mission; to promote animal welfare. This issue has a deep-rooted history, various legislative acts being voted on and passed, as well as many effects from these organizations, and legislative bills. Animal farms find their first start in 7500 BC where goats and sheep were farmed for their resources such as wool, milk, and meat (Early Farming). Even 7,000 years before Jesus …show more content…
Through the decades of the 20th and 21st century, several bills have been passed, failed, and reworked. Some of the laws directly affecting agriculturists that were passed are Horse Transportation Safety Act, Prevent All Soring Tactics Act, and the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (Federal Bills). One of the most controversial and publicized acts in the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment. This act would “ ban non-therapeutic uses of medically important antibiotics in food animal production” (Rep. Slaughter Reintroduces Preservation of Antibiotics Legislation). Animal welfare is always well debated and heated issue in the house of representatives and senate. The nation stands divided on many animal welfare topics like the use of antibiotics. One party strongly believes that the antibiotics in the animal transfer to the products produced by the animal. Those that chose to fair with this side have concluded that if the antibiotics have transferred, that they can be extremely dangerous to one's self and can cause future medical complications. The people that take this position are aware that farmers are trying to keep their animals healthy and immune to certain bacterias but over using an antibiotic can create antibiotic resistant, mutant pathogens (Rep. Slaughter Reintroduces Preservation of Antibiotics Legislation). On the contrasting side, farmers and other agriculturists …show more content…
When these laws are passed, producers are burdened with rules and regulations that they must follow. For example, it could be involving the slaughter, transportation, or shelter the livestock is housed in. The law could require a certain amount of square footage or acreage per a selected number of livestock. Next the middleman is affected. The middleman could be anyone from a grocery store owner to an owner of a store that sells things that use animal products. Usually the laws require farmers to use a more expensive route to caring for an animal thus the farmer has to raise his or her prices when selling the animal or product. The grocery store owner then would have to pay more for the animal products he is purchasing, but he would also be able to advertise depending on the product that his products were organic, antibiotic free, or free of animal testing. This could both benefit or drawback his business depending on the consumers in the area. The consumer is the final group to be affected by animal welfare acts. There are both positive and negatives to the consumer side. The positives to the consumer side is that they can take advantage of antibiotic free, organic, animal testing free and other specialized products. If consumers are conscious of what they are putting in and on their bodies they would appreciate the choices these laws allow them. The
Ever since a young age, I have been a passionate animal enthusiast. I cannot image a life without a dog by my side. Animals are not just pets, or food, or part of the environment. They are intelligent creatures and deserve to be treated as such. Animals have evolved just as we have. The evolution theory even says humans evolved from primates. So why do animals not have rights? They have a brain and can learn and grow, just as we can. It can also be argued that animals have a soul. I believe animals not only have dignity, but they also have rights.
Her name was Snow White, beautiful eyes with a smile so bright, perked up ears that rose to the sky and beautiful black and white fur that made you feel safe when needed someone to talk to or even a hug. Since birth she was loyal, since birth she was faithful, but the reality of it all is that, not every owner knew how to take care of her. An animal is known to be more than a companion and our savior of the night, which is why we should understand the reality behind animal welfare, but in actuality, we don’t. But, they’re some habits to create a positive impact on animal welfare. From taking your pet to the veterinarian every six months to making sure your animal feels loved and appreciated by giving them attention, they are a lot more ways
Animal testing has been one of the issues that people are fighting overtime because of its moral. Even though some results of tests are successful on people, many people are still fighting for the animal’s rights. They believe that animals should have their own rights to live a free life where they belong, just like their species. In scientists point of view, animals have been one of the main subjects to test on, but a lot of them are currently looking forward to use and develop alternatives for the cruel act of animal testing.
Should animals in Captivity be allowed? Animals in Captivity should be allowed because they get the medicine they need, animals can live longer, and the animals can get smarter. The first reason animals in captivity should be allowed is that animals can get healthy. There are rehabilitation programs that nurse animals back to health.Veterinarians can prevent and control a disease. Second, animals can live longer in captivity. In the article, by Hannah J. O’regan and Andrew C. Kitchener states, “Gorillas live for more than 50 years in captivity compared to 35 years in the wild” (223). The animals diets also help them live longer. Lastly animals can get smarter. Animals in captivity do more activities making them smarter. For example, “Rats raised in enriched environments had larger brains”(O’regan and Kitchener 224). Animals in captivity should be allowed because they are able to get healthier, their lifespan increases, and they get more intelligent.
Author Anthony Douglas Williams once said, “We have more to learn from animals than animals have to learn from us,” (A-Z Quotes), but what most people fail to assimilate is that animals have given humans erudition on many subjects. Throughout history, animals have helped with advancements in science, contributing to new ideas to keep people safe and healthy. Moreover, they continue to help humankind every second of the day, and will continue to do so as science and technology evolve.
This is due in part by the previous statement to get higher yields out every animal raised. Cattle, chickens and pigs alike are all subject to certain fattening diets, modern breeding techniques and growth hormone treatments. These forced practices have very adverse, life altering and threatening affects that lead farmers to use antibiotics in order to keep diseases at bay. The Committee on Drug Use in Food Animals states, “doses are used when pathogens are known to be present in the environment or when animals encounter a high stress situation and are more susceptible to pathogens “, (1999, p. 28). It is important to point out that the use of growth hormones and antibiotics dramatically increases body mass, drastically shortens the lifespan of animals such as cattle and is being detected in food for human consumption.
For the food and farming industry animals are a business of more than 9.7 billion dollars a year. These animals are livestock raised. New laws are protecting this animal and when companies don’t follow the laws they get criminal charges. The use of animals has also helped in the medical field with human life. This type of animals has also been regulated by the FDA. Rats and mice are the most used animals for lab testing. If we believe that animals should not have rights because they don´t have rationality, we also have to remember that baby human don´t have rationality either. For this reason, animals have
Imagine one minute running freely on the vast green terrain surrounding you, then the next locked up in a cold, hard, cage. It sounds horrible, right? Who would want to be locked up with minimal area to stretch your legs, and have people staring at you constantly? I for one, would hate that. I imagine that most animals locked up would share the same feelings. I personally, am against animals being caged. They do not deserve that kind of lifestyle and should not have to live with it just because humans pay money to see it. Animals are suffering greatly from being locked away. When an animal is bought, traded or given to a zoo, the animals rights are stripped away from them.
Animal rights activists are rallying and petitioning for an animal bill of rights because they are stating that animals are only being considered “property” by law, being no different than a table and chair. The Animal Legal Defense Fund is really passionate about the document being published even having specific rights for animals with numbering and strong evidence to back up each right and claim, leaving little detail out. Also, in the article “A Change of Heart About Animals” written by Jeremy Rifkin states “What these researchers are finding is that many of our fellow creatures are more like us than we had ever imagined” (Rikin 2). I agree with his statement, because animals and humans have many similarities pointed out by many researchers over the many years we have existed on this planet. He provides specific evidence like Koko the gorilla, who passed an IQ test with a score of 70-95 or around that range and basically I think it's pretty amazing, sad, and ironic that Koko is smarter than a majority than humans. There was also a parrot named alex who could communicate with it's owner and tell her how many of each colored shape was on a plate which was presented to him, and literally asked for a glass of water and I think that is honestly incredible.
The opinion of animals in the eyes of the law still compares them to objects: having them seen only as property and not living beings. A law towards better treatment has been passed, however, it has not been enforced. The implemented law is also full of loopholes that scientists have taken advantage over. Ever since that law, the Animal Welfare Act, was passed, even the definition of an animal has come into question. Additionally, a bias has been created in that there is more of a moral concern towards animals like dogs, cats, and primates rather than fish, mice, and rats, however, there are people advocating for the protection of animals not as popularly loved. Animal testing in the United States should be limited to having
Economic incentives for better treatment can be very effective. A positive for improving animal welfare is that consumers want animals to be treated better. Corporations can be motivated to improve practices when consumers express a desire.
There is an extreme amount of waste created by raising so many animals in one place which then the surrounding land, air, and water becomes contaminated/ polluted by waste run-off. Even the residents of communities around factory farms reported many accounts of illnesses, and property values were lowered by their proximity to these farms. In an effort to try and counteract the health challenges brought up by the unsanitary, stressful, and overcrowded living conditions, antibiotics were used frequently, which can then create a drug-resistant bacteria and further puts human health at risk. Close to 75% of the antibiotics given to farm animals ends up undigested in their urine and manure. Through this waste, the antibiotics contaminate crops and waterways thus affecting human health.
The Animal Welfare Act is the only Federal law that manages animal treatment in the means of transport, research, and by dealers (USDA). Although this law conveys the impression that all animals will have a basic standard of treatment, this isn’t the

Argument for Animal Rights The argument for animal rights assumes that animals posses their own lives and deserve to be assigned rights in order to protect their wellbeing. This view insists that animals are not merely goods utilised only to benefit mankind and they should be allowed to choose how they want to live their lives, free from the constraints of man. But if animals are given absolute rights, then surely they shouldn’t be allowed to kill each other, as this would be a violation of these rights.
