Health, benefit, well-being, progress, care, profit, thriving, all words that are synonyms to welfare. Animal welfare has been an agricultural issue for several decades. Animal welfare refers to the physical, emotional, and mental state an animal is in. There are several organization in the United States along with other corporations around the world that have the same mission; to promote animal welfare. This issue has a deep-rooted history, various legislative acts being voted on and passed, as well as many effects from these organizations, and legislative bills. Through the decades of the 20th and 21st century, several bills have been passed, failed, and reworked. Some of the laws directly affecting agriculturists that were passed are Horse Transportation Safety Act, Prevent All Soring Tactics Act, and the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (Federal Bills). One of the most controversial and publicized acts in the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment. This act would “ ban non-therapeutic uses of medically important antibiotics in food animal production” (Rep. Slaughter Reintroduces Preservation of Antibiotics Legislation). Animal welfare is always well debated and heated issue in the house of representatives and senate. The nation stands divided on many animal welfare topics like the use of antibiotics. One party strongly believes that the antibiotics in the animal transfer to the products produced by the animal. Those that chose to fair with this side have concluded that if the antibiotics have transferred, that they can be extremely dangerous to one's self and can cause future medical complications. The people that take this position are aware that farmers are trying to keep their animals healthy and immune to certain bacterias but over using an antibiotic can create antibiotic resistant, mutant pathogens (Rep. When these laws are passed, producers are burdened with rules and regulations that they must follow. For example, it could be involving the slaughter, transportation, or shelter the livestock is housed in. The law could require a certain amount of square footage or acreage per a selected number of livestock. Next the middleman is affected. The middleman could be anyone from a grocery store owner to an owner of a store that sells things that use animal products. Usually the laws require farmers to use a more expensive route to caring for an animal thus the farmer has to raise his or her prices when selling the animal or product. The grocery store owner then would have to pay more for the animal products he is purchasing, but he would also be able to advertise depending on the product that his products were organic, antibiotic free, or free of animal testing. This could both benefit or drawback his business depending on the consumers in the area. The consumer is the final group to be affected by animal welfare acts. There are both positive and negatives to the consumer side. The positives to the consumer side is that they can take advantage of antibiotic free, organic, animal testing free and other specialized products. If consumers are conscious of what they are putting in and on their bodies they would appreciate the choices these laws allow them. The
