Education
Education in the United States is provided by public, private and home schools. State governments set overall educational standards, often mandate standardized tests for K–12, public school systems and supervise, usually through a board of regents, state colleges and universities.
With the current global economic climate, it seems apparent that the now established education system is unable to meet the needs of our hyper-connected society, a society that is in a constant state of evolution. Let’s examine some problems that prevent de US education system from regaining its former preeminence.
One of the problems would be: unnecessary textbooks; textbooks that are not necessary for the schools are all those that do not present any teaching or those that have inappropriate subjects for example: all those that present knowledge in a dogmatic way. Those that impose knowledge do not invite or help build them when more that divulging knowledge, they vulgarize and trivialize or twenty villages are passed with the happy level. Those that substitute any other source of information where “the book” is necessary the other books by the same concept all those textbooks that present a rigid structure that does not facilitate adaptation from learning situations to context all those books that do not encourage the prescriptive value initiative they mark the programming and its follow-up all those that are elaborated and distributed with market criteria, not pedagogical or social in
There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. Conversely, a few of the prominent reasons why the education system is failing are overcrowded schools, the rise of technology, and following the same old school hours.
America used to thrive on its education system and that is why it became one of the greatest nations in the world. Education is the backbone of our country, and we must give high priority to improve its current condition. Unfortunately, in the past couple of decades, the education system has been regressing. It has been on the decline and not as effective. The quality of education in a country has an influence on GDP growth, social cohesion and social well being in general. In order to improve the quality of education in the U.S., the following must be taken into consideration: the structure of our education system must be reanalyzed, we must compare and contrast our education system to systems of other countries with higher rankings, and finally, there must be a solution.
The year is 2012. In the movie Back to the Future II, two years from now, in 2016, Marty McFly travels from the past to save his family’s future. The future is almost upon us, and yet it would seem that our education system has changed little since Back to the Future hit theaters in 1985. “We still have same teachers, in the same parts, in the same schools, with the same level of knowledge, with the same equipment’s, and much the same standard of parental support” (David). Ironically, we have been steadily implementing policy after policy, increasing standards and accountability, promoting oversight and rule… the list goes on, and yet our progress seems minimal, our educators complain of underfunded classrooms, and our legislators complain of underperforming schools. The question of “how to improve our education system” is not getting satisfactorily answered because our system is not broken, merely underdeveloped. The truth is that America has made paces in improving its education technique or system; the problem that remains is for us to entrust our educators with the greater pliability and autonomy that they need to excel.
The education system in America has a long history of struggle and change, as we have grown as a nation we have experienced an ever-increasing rise in diversity. This diversity has caused rigidities between groups and all stratus of society and has been a major impact in debates concerning the educational opportunities in America.
The American Education System is not meeting the needs of current students. If anything, the system is not building a sturdy foundation for the future working class. Schools have existed for many years and every period they have worked differently. However, every school’s main purpose was to educate students to be efficacious later in life. Modern day schools are corrupting students with added pressure, standardized tests, making less accommodations for special education students, not following laws, and take away individualism from the students’. The students of modern times are the people of our future and the future does not look too bright with the current American Education System.
As a result from the taught curriculum children receive from Mathematics and English, they are forced to take a yearly test also referred to as the standardized test. The standardized test comes from the federal law and measures how much a student learned throughout the year and if they understood the material thoroughly. According to Ravitch “our policymakers today think that what matters most is getting high test scores in reading and mathematics” (Ravitch 106). The statement indicates that for the federal state it only matters if the school receives outstanding scores;
The Education system currently in use by the United States of America is a modified version of a methodical tool used to implement obedient control at young age and centralized power solidification. A problem with the system is the obsessive culture of
Since the end of the Cold War, there have been a number of changes that have occurred globally. The mobile communication and internet technology has exposed this world to the new avenues of possibilities. With the advent of globalization, a borderless world has started to emerge, and the significance and demand of the education in this new world education has grown even more. The United States and the entire Western region has been witnessing n erosion of advantages in technological, economic, and defense arenas. This is because the country is lagging the other countries of the world with respect to education. In the present times, the
The path to success has been remodeled over the years by different generations due to the developing mind. College does educate and challenges people to do more and think more. We can clearly see this example because the developers of this debate are both college graduates. Later on in life more and more questions will be asked and answered. College has an importance that is so popular but that importance has a value. The developing world and society will always view college as something necessary no matter what because is has proved to be a path and a escape to a better life. People that have specific circumstances and cannot pursue college have often been denied of a huge opportunity that can be life changing to almost everyone. No one can judge intelligence based on economical stability or tests, but what the educational system seems to be judging intelligence on is the bank account of the projected student. There is a saying that says "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." But as technology is constantly advancing and computers are running almost anything, is a college education really necessary? There are people whom have never set foot in a college and are doing better than people who have their master's degree. There are views from both sides that contain a valid argument.
“It is important to place education in its sociological context, to remind us that education is necessary, but not the sole reason for an individual or society’s success. Success is dependent on social class, the formal education of parents, and race, ethnicity and gender. It is also dependent on how important formal education is to a society, and how much it will be willing to invest financially, structurally, and emotionally in education” (Vissing, 2011, Sec. 4.7). The major factor that influences the quality of education in the United States is funding. When the funding is low, the quality of the teaching drops. “The data clearly indicates that the amount of financial support available influences the quality of education receives” (Vissing,
Education is inevitable. It is all around us because we can learn from virtually anything. When you are cooking, dancing, talking or any other activity you have actually had to learn several things to be able to do them. In the educational perspective, I am a pragmatist and I tend to follow after Dewey's footsteps. The concept of Pragmatism is one that developed in the 20th century. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning should involve real-life situations. Learning becomes more concrete to a student when they apply it to real-life situations, as where learning things that do not connect to them has more of an abstract sense. Personally, I would have to agree with Dewey when he said, "I
Many Americans show patriotism and deem American as the greatest country, but are the facts in America’s favor? American has always been known worldwide as a superpower, however is American that glorious in every category? We are known for our many achievements throughout history, but through the 241 years we have been a country not once were we praised for our education system. America has struggled in the past because many students dropped out to work and help provide for their family, and the lack of urgency to learn. However, our education is still a major problem, and today we have no excuse. American students struggle and are average or below average in many tests compared to other countries. The education system in America is doing more harm than good and is putting America and our posterity at risk.
The United States of America has what is called a decentralized education system which means that there is no national school system. According to the Constitution, the ultimate power to create and administer education policy rests with the 50 states. There are no national laws in the United States addressing a prescribed curriculum for the establishment and recognition of institutions, the governance of institutions, or the recognition of degrees or professions. The US Department of Education, contributing about 7% of total education spending, has limited functions within the education system. The department influences public opinion and builds partnerships with states, educators, parents, communities, and even the private regions in order to improve education. This is done to ensure a mostly equal educational opportunity by enforcing civil rights laws and allowing more choice in a thoroughly planned learning environment. The United States even supports educational improvement and reform by providing grants to states, local governments, and individual school, with a focus on weaker communities lacking in necessary funds. By providing financial assistance to students to help pay for post-secondary education, it greatly increases enrollment, with a majority of all students financial aid in the US being funded by the federal government.
There has been well over 27 million college degrees and credentials awarded since the president took office in 2009. Most of these students are making up their student debt successfully. Education is one of the most important tools needed in order to be successful in life. Some people are not even aware of how our education is doing presently. The education next pole showed that 57 percent of the people who took the pole did not know about the common core. There has been a recent protest about our education system. For example, the Betsy DeVos protest that has recently been taking place after Donald Trump has selected her as the new secretary of education. They protested about her insufficient education experience and her lack of respect to public schools. DeVos supported shutting down schools that are labeled as failing schools in Detroit. Instead of improving failing schools, she donated funds to new and private schools. She also has never attended a public or college school, which explains her bias towards private education. This is an example of what people think of our education today is. The education system in America today is at its very most best, resulting in more graduates going to college and paying off their student debt successfully.
Education reform is a topic that every student, parent and teacher should be interested in because it effects everyone in the community. Many different approaches to education reform have been tried, and even though they seem to work for the time being, there are always more improvements that need to be made. One of the best ideas that has been discussed in the most recent years is getting the parents and students more involved in the actual reform process. Many school administrators see a problem with involving students, even though they are the ones most affected by the changes within schools. Student’s opinions should be taken into consideration because they are the ones who see what happens inside the school and within the classroom, and are the most affected by it. Involving parents and students in the reform of their schools will improve the quality of education, improve parent and teacher relationships and reduce parent and student complaints.
