It was eleven days before Christmas of 2012 and the unthinkable happens. There was a mass shooting at an elementary school killing 27 people, which 20 of those individuals were children. All the major news outlets are reporting that a gunman forces his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and goes on a shooting rampage in Newton, Connecticut. The President of the United States wipes away tears as he realizes that this has happen again and this time to first graders. Unfortunately, mass shootings are becoming the norm from year to year in a country already plagued with gun violence. “Gun control is an umbrella term used to refer to regulations that impose restrictions on the sale, distribution, & possession of guns or ammunition (Kneeland, 2016).” The Second Amendment: states that “a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed (Kneeland, 2016).” The question is do America exercise gun control over gun rights or vice versa for the benefit of society? This research paper is on gun control. Specifically, the link between violence and gun control and the politics behind gun control. Should society lean towards gun rights at all cost because of the second amendment? Or should America have stricter gun laws based on the research?
