We can’t deny that eating is one of the most favorite things we ought to do. Eating is essential to us, obviously, so we can get the energy we need for our daily activities and, most importantly, for survival. We eat because we are hungry. However, many types of the food today give us the opposite effect. Instead of sustaining our body with essential nutrients, it compromises our health and wellbeing. Like any other things, excess eating is bad, especially when it contains a lot of fat, sugar, or salt, which are all found in junk food. Andrew F. Smith defined junk food as, "those commercial products, including candy, bakery goods, ice cream, salty snacks, and soft drinks, which have little or no nutritional value but do have plenty of calories, salt, and fats” (x). With these arguments, it is best to not choose junk food over healthy food, for it can increase the risk of getting various chronic diseases.
Examples of these chronic diseases caused by junk food are problems in memory and learning ability. Eating junk food regularly for five days straight can deteriorate memory. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011 conducted a study that showed healthy people who ate only junk food for five straight days had problems in memory that made them performed poorly on cognitive tests that measured attention, speed, and mood.
