Millennials, a group of people who were born in the year 1984 and after. There are millions of them and they are our future. According to Simon Sinek, millennials “are accused of being entitled and narcissistic, self interested, unfocused and lazy.” Even though Millennials lack in some aspects, he believes that parenting, technology, impatience and environment is to blame. As a millennial, I totally agree with Sinek’s point because I am affected by all the variables that he listed ever since birth. Millennials did not do anything wrong but, the way they were raised affected their attitudes. Sinek says that there are four reasons why Millennials have such a selfish attitude. The first point he gives out is parenting. Parents made millennials feel really important and special. He says that millennials can obtain everything they want because their parents spoil them too much. Simon Sinek states, “You take this group of people and they graduate and they get a job and they’re thrust into the real world and in an instant they find out they are not special, their mom’s can’t get them a promotion, that you get nothing for coming in last and by the way you can’t just have it because you want it. In an instant their entire self image is shattered.” (Sinek, 2016) Sineks point is that parents make their children feel empowered but then then they start work and realise that they can not always get what they want. The next point he makes is technology. Millennials these days are caught up on their phone with a lot of different social media accounts. Sinek observes that millennials use social media to hide the fact that they are actually empty inside. He agrees that technology is very addicting and it makes them feel good. Sinek says, “An entire generation now has access to an addictive, numbing chemical called dopamine, through cellphones and social media, while they are going through the high stress of adolescence. “ (Sinek 2016) He makes it clear that millennials aren't able to handle their feelings because instead of getting help from people, they turn to their technology. Millennials depend too much on their devices and always rely on them for almost every single task. The third thing that affects this
Millennials are considered anyone who was born between the years of 1980-2000. Most other generations such as the Baby Boomers and Generation X look down upon millennials because of how the world reacts to millennials qualities. Baby Boomers was anyone born between the years 1946-1964, after World War II. They grew up in a time of radical changes within the world that destroyed the people’s trust in
In the article “The Beat Up Generation,” Abby Ellin claims that the negative way other generations view the millennials may all be wrong; instead, the millennials are preparing for the world most generations are opposing. Ellin declares in her article that the millennials are shown to be the most disliked generation; their ideas collide with those in the Baby Boomers and the Gen-Xers causing confusion. Constantly, Articles are being thrown out about the millennials “incompetence” and their “self-absorbed” behavior which only causes more hatred according to Ellin. However, she continues to state that millennials are no more selfish than the previous generations; in fact, millennials are only trying to discover new ways for “communication and
In “Generation Nice” published in the August 17, 2014, edition of the New York Times, Sam Tanenhaus debunks the older generations’ belief that millennials are self-absorbed. The author provides a different idea of millennials. Tanenhaus believes that the millennials generation will change the world. The author states that the millennials to center on the world. Pew research center found this generation is not narcissistic, but they’re complicated, thoughtful and understanding.
Published in Time magazine on May 20, 2013, “The New Greatest Generation – Why Millennials Will Save Us All,” by Joel Stein, proposes that millennials are a generation of entitled, self-involved narcissists, but have the potential of bettering society. He begins the article by condemning them, then shifts his point and gives reasons why they are changing the way that the world is working. Although Joel Stein’s article includes factual information, it becomes ineffective due to its bias, generalizations, and euphemisms used to further his argument.
Millennials are categorized in many differ ways. Some people believe Millennials are lazy and narcissistic while other people believe they are more open-minded confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and receptive to new ideas and ways of living. This starts different disputes between individuals. For example, Hasan Piker argues Simon Sinek statements made in the video, “On Millennials in the Workplace.” Sinek uses his motivational speaking skills to persuade the audience that Millennials, people reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century, are catered to and entitled. He uses four examples that back up his reasoning: parenting, technology, impatience, and environment. In contrast, Piker responds differently, believing that Millennials work for their status. Piker argues Sinek’s views about Millennials in the video “Young Turks on Millennials.” Both Sinek and Piker use different rhetorical strategies to entertain and persuade their audience about Millennials.
The Millennials: This generation grew up in an era with many technological advances, along with the creation of new social networking sites; therefore,
The day all high school seniors have been longing for: graduation. After dealing with all the trials and tribulations of high school, these graduates proceed with their lives. Many paths will open up for these young people as they begin taking the steps to integrate themselves into society. Many will start working straight out of high school. Some may go to a trade school and pick up work after.
Many studies have been done focusing on the millennial generation. Most of them prove that we are self-absorbed and entitled, but there are also many studies showing how positive and accepting we are. The term ’millennial’ is broadly defined as individuals born between 1980 and 2000, but it all depends on who you ask. Some people will tell you that millennials are self-centered narcissist. For many people, millennials are the future, and the future looks very bright.
Millennials may be criticized, but they are a generation like no other. In the article “Why Millennials Will Save Us All,” Joel Stein asserts that millennials are a positive force of change. Stein’s intent is to convince his target audience, older generations who perceive millennials as “lazy, entitled, selfish and shallow” (28), that they misunderstand millennials. He boldly claims that “[millennials are] not a new species; they've just mutated to adapt to their environment” (31). Stein persuades his audience that millennials are most certainly a treasure trove of remarkable qualities.
Now a days our generation spends about almost every hour of the day on their smart phones or tablets. You can see them texting at a restaurant while their having lunch with a friend or even driving as they look through their social media like Twitter and Instagram. Many people have always wondered why we're like this, but its actually very simple. Like Josh Sanburn states in paragraph nine, “ they're deeply anxious about missing out on something better”. I can agree with this because by doing this millennials gain confidence and they're also able to compare their lives with others like for example the Kardashian family or even people like Miley Cyrus.
Joel Stein, the author of “The ME ME ME Generation”, argues Millennials are a generation of narcissistic brats who are addicted to technology. However, Stein fails to account that Millennials are cautious of their actions due to the widespread use of information on the internet that could affect personal and professional relationships.
Learning is something that defines the millennial generation. While some some may call us lazy, I’d say we care more about ourselves. We will question the social norms of working a job we don't like and job hop to find one that makes us happy because we know that the happier we are, the better we perform. That idea also shapes how we affect the world. We try to make entice change by having rallies, such as the Women’s Marches, and bringing awareness to issues, such as bullying and suicide, through our use of the internet because we know that happier people equal a better place for
The millennial generation is defined as the generation of children born between 1980 and 2000. This is the generation of young men and women fully committing themselves to personal aspirations. Time Magazine published an article titled “Millennials: the Me Me Me Generation,” which claimed millennials are lazy, self-entitled, self-obsessed narcissists. Yet, millennials are also known for being realistic.
Secondly, Sinek explains that millennials have suffered disadvantages resulting from the older generations advancements in technology. He does this by analyzation of the impact which technology has on Millennials. According to Sinek, “An entire generation now has access to an addictive, numbing chemical called dopamine, through cell phones and social media, while they are going through the high stress of adolescence (Sinek, 2016.)” In making this comment, Sinek puts into perspective just how highly addictive technology and social media really is. He explains that just like highly addictive drugs, the use of these devices releases dopamine. In other words, acceptance on social media makes you feel good. By putting this into perspective, Sinek urges his
Across the nation, people are talking about the Millennial generation and how different they are compared to others, but are they really that different? Millennials are lazy, entitled, and selfish, or as you may have heard may be essential to the modern workplace, either way, they are being talked about whether it is good or bad. To put it in other words, past generations are concerned for what the future will look like with this technology-dependent generation, but is that a bad thing if the technology is only going to advance from here on out? The older generation is being too harsh or are they just genuinely concerned about the future? Joel Stein (2013) has written an article about the Millennials, it is titled Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation he argues for them being a selfish generation but by saying that it is not a bad thing. The second article is by Liz Zarka (2017) Generation Me: The Millennial Generation’s obsession with being unique, she argues that they are the generation that needs to be concerned for. After reading both of these articles I agree with some of the points that both of these authors make, however, there are also some sections that I disagree with. My perception of the situation is that millennials may have all these negative characteristics but use them to an advantage that no other generation can has; along with the advancement of technology and the use of social media may have increased the narcissistic trait in them, but they use these traits to get what they want, however, being narcissistic isn’t always good there can certainly be some disadvantages.
