Everyone watches movies, whether it be in a theater or just at home on your TV. The reason that most people think of is just simply for entertainment. The fact that there are so many different genres of movies makes it easy for us to bring out different emotions while watching them. Those rush of emotions are what keeps us entertained and coming back for more. Scary movies, in particular, is an example of this. Why is it that we watch scary movies so much to the point where we have nightmares or are even paranoid to do anything? In an article, Why do we watch scary movies?, JoAnn Cantor, outreach director for the Center for Communication Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and professor of 26 years, says “... there are adults who are fearful while walking through the woods after watching ‘Blair Witch Project’ or who cannot swim, even in swimming pools or lakes, after watching ‘Jaws’ ”. If there is such a big impact on us after watching scary movies, then there must be a good reason why it's so addicting. Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein, a professor of social and organizational psychology at the University of Utrecht stated, “People go to horror films because they want to be frightened or they wouldn’t do it twice. You choose your entertainment because you want it to affect you”.You might think that people who like watching scary movies aren't afraid of the things they see, but that's not the case. It is mostly because people are able to pay attention to the movies as
One in four college students in a recent study said they experience lingering effects of a frightful movie or TV experience from childhood. (Bernie DeGroat) Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief the someone or something is dangerous causing pain, or threats. It is not appropriate for middle schoolers to read classic horror stories like “The Tell-Tale Heart”, because they can cause them anxiety and it can make them aggressive after watching scary movies.
Why does anyone watch a movie? Is it for entertainment, to provide an escape from the normality of ones own life, or even to appreciate the value of a good film?
One time we had went to the movie to watch a scary movie that just came out and after that movie we was so spooked and scared and after that we never watch another scary movie after that , later on that day we went and none of us could sleep because we always thought someone was coming in the house all because we heard noises coming from downstairs of the house. These are the types of fears brought up in Stephen King’s article “Why We Crave Horror.” Stephen King’s claims are true because we read horror stories or watch horror movies to get over the fact of being scared; his claims help people get back to be normal and help them release anger and emotions.
Stephen King’s essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” explains how horror movies are important to keep one’s sanity. King starts by saying that everyone is a little mentally ill, even in a subtle way. By seeing horror movies younger people test themselves and prove that they aren’t afraid, as well as to confirm that they are much more normal than the people shown in these movies. We also go to have fun. In a slightly morbid way we find these movies entertaining. King says that perhaps horror movies allow us to let go of certain morals and maturity and give our emotions free reign for a few hours. He also illustrates that sanity is possibly only a matter of degree: one is not simply insane or not insane.
According to Stephen King, America’s best-known writer of horror fiction, horror movies can serve a valuable purpose. In King’s Playboy-published essay, “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” he examines the popular trend of attending horror films, and he provides several explanations for this craving behavior. King claims that attending these gory films is not just a trend; he believes that it is a necessity. In the essay, King claims that we need/crave horror movies for two basic reasons. First, we need to view such films to fulfill our basic need for entertainment and excitement. Also, we need to view these horror films to fulfill a certain psychological need. King states that we need to subject ourselves to such irrationality periodically in order to exercise our dark side and release certain evil fantasies, so we do not act on them.
A fair claim can be made on human nature that humans tend to crave the unknown, even if they are afraid of it. People still watch to the end of horror movies even though they know they will regret it shortly after. Often times these films or even TV shows leave a lasting impact on a person emotionally, an impact that can stay with someone way after the two hour movie is complete. Us as humans like to believe that we are stronger than the film and it is simply just acting but often times that is not the case. In films similar to Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play, Cabin in the Wood, and The Exorcist, the audience is suppose to receive a reaction that is almost suppose to haunt them. It is no surprise that horror movies are not meant to watch alone because it can and will patronize a person. Viewer’s discretion is often advised and should be taken into consideration before pressing play on any frightful motion picture. A person can be truly be effected by a movie to the point of insanity and great fear.
Movies can be divided in to so many categories nowadays and there are different reasons why there is an emergence of these. One reason being that movies evolve with society and this is evident in the way movies are presented from black and white to colored and now 3D movies. But we must also look at how the different plots have evolved from the usual light home movies to mafia influenced movies and now more socially relevant movies. As society evolves, so does our opinions and views on different ideologies or concepts about life and our surroundings.
I have no doubt at all that I will inevitably watch Crimson Peak. The only question I have is where and when. I love watching freaky horror movies and I think that going to a theater is completely worth the price. Theaters immerse you with their surrounding speakers and there are no young children running around the theater asking you to play Barbies with them.
Watching a movie you don’t have to pay attention to, means you have two socially acceptable hours to stare at one fixed object, let your mind wander, and relax.
Have you ever been sleepless and anxious after watching a horror movie? Horror movies can be scary and can also create mental traumatic experiences to the audiences as there are lots and lots of violence and horrifying scenes in the films and audiences are basically watching the actors being tortured. People who like horror films are able to separate Hollywood from reality, but due to the realness of horror film plots and settings, some people may feel so scared by the films that they become suspicious of their surroundings, which can sometimes lead to mental problems. However, horror films can also be beneficial to the audiences. Audiences’ mental problems like anxiety can get treated as their brains will release some chemicals like Dopamine
October is one of my favorite months all the horror galore! I can sit and watch horror movies for hours. I also get to feel like a kid again decorating and taking my child trick or treating enjoying Halloween movies with her. Please feel free to like comment and follow any suggestions are appreciated.
First and foremost, movies have always been a big part of life. I will run to see a particular movie, or sit back and watch classics before I run to sit in front of a TV. It’s something about movies that seem to always touch on
A lot of people, like scary movies because of the adrenaline the movies make in them. A personal experience of an allure to fear that happened to me, is that I was watching a Netflix show which it is called, “Stranger Things”, this show is about how in a city some people are disappearing because of something they don´t even know, when I saw the monster that took the children I was a little bit scared, because the monster only shows up in forests.
We all agree movies allow us to escape and take us to places we’ve never been and inside the skin of people quite different from ourselves. They not only offer people a window onto the wider world, but opens eyes to feelings and emotion. Audiences feel what the director wants the audience to feel. The definition of feeling is an emotional state or reaction (feeling). This is, the motivation and empowerment for anyone attempting to create a movie. Movies inspire all types of feelings like happy when watching a comedy, scared while viewing a horror, or awe while enduring a romance. The audience of a movie will feel multiple emotions at different times throughout any
In today’s society, we choose our form of entertainment because we want it to affect us. Dr. Goldstein from the University of Utrecht states that “people have the ability to pay attention as much or as little as they care to in order to control what effect it has on them, emotionally and otherwise." (Griffiths). Entertainment horror has become a form of “catharsis” (Singh). Horror
