“The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. It has led us up those last few steps to the mountain pass; and beyond there is a different country.” This is a quote said by J. Robert Oppenheimer. When Oppenheimer stated this quote, he meant it as a new beginning for America on the road to recovery. With the decision being made to drop the atomic bomb on Japan there came people who were for and against it, the after effect, and the political implications. It is believed that the decision of dropping the atomic bomb on Japan “was the most difficult decision” of Truman’s life. Truman felt that he was saving Japanese lives by dropping the bomb rather than doing a Normandy-type amphibious landing that would have killed millions. Truman did not want the war to go any longer than what it needed to be. Although Truman did agree to the dropping of the bomb, not even the scientists could predict the radiation sickness that would go on to kill 100,000 more people. It is stated that “the bombs did...bring an end to the most destructive war in history.” Nevertheless, there will always be people that are for and against the decisions that are made that affect many people. Tom Nichols from The National Interest states that “Truman and his advisors made the only decision they could have made; indeed, considered in the context of World War II, it wasn’t really much of a decision at all.” Back then, this was the best, most logical decision to make.
