#ImNoAngel Times Square. The first thought that pops into my mind is advertisements. Advertisements everywhere. Bathed in neon lights 24 hours a day, Times Square is the ultimate symbol for the ‘City that Never Sleeps’. It’s impossible to walk around Times Square without noticing the new movie and theatre productions, the products we absolutely need to have, and of course the stunning men and women presenting us these things. It’s beautiful and sad at the same time. Because even though it has symbolized our ever progressing modernization since the roaring twenties, we have never been so unsatisfied. Not with our wealth, not with our social interactions, and not with our physical appearance. Especially the last one is supposed to be a threat in our society nowadays. The malefactor? Advertisements showing gorgeous photoshopped models. But is it true? Is this unrealistic beauty standard, backed up by the media, truly the biggest threat in our society today? Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published in 2011 that 35 percent of the American women suffer from obesity. That’s more than one-third! Already our society is adapting. Instead of helping the victims into a healthier lifestyle, we have started to accept that women are getting fatter. A friend of mine has gained some serious weight in the past two years, and for eighteen months I saw her struggle with it. She no longer resembled the Western beauty standard, and she knew it. She tried reducing her weight gain, but one day she just gave up. Although she attained some peace of mind, it had one major side effect: her weight has now reached a point in which it has become unhealthy.
