Teachers assume that kids who play sports get bad grades and don't turn in their homework. According to the research of the producers of the news article: sports how much is too much, say it's hard to balance school with sports, however, a research was found out that most kids who play multiple sports have grades that improved and they use their free time wisely. This means our students will have more suitable grades and organize their free time, now that you know that playing sports will actually help grades does that mean that everyone who plays a sport will get a scholarship?
The Atlantic article, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics,” by Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt make a statement on the sports programs in schools. They oppose the thought that participating in sports programs results in a student’s academics suffering, but instead believe sports programs provide academic benefits. Their article targets the article, “The Case Against High-School Sports”, by Amanda Ripley who argues that participation in sports at school cost students’ academic success. The duo constructs their argument around Ripley’s claims and counter her points to strengthen their own. Their argument has a mix of supporting information and points that weakened Bowen and Hitt’s claim. This is due to the methods and evidence they provided which didn’t appear as convincing when trying to persuade readers.
Also sports help kids with their grades.” According to a 2013 evaluation conducted by the Crime Lab at the University of Chicago, Becoming a Man--Sports Edition creates lasting improvements in the boys’ study habits and grade point averages. “ (“ Bowen & Hitt”). Sports are the number one reason for a kid who is thinking about dropping out to stay in school. Think about it if you need a 2.0 to stay in sports and you struggle in school but, you love sports and want to do it in college you will stay in school to achieve your dream. Also with sports that helps me is you don’t get time to procrastinate because if I know I have a game tomorrow and I have a big essay do the day after that I will do it tonight because I know I can’t do it after the game. Which is why most people who aren’t in sports struggle with procrastine. “Neish (1993) that found positive correlations between high, medium, or low levels of involvement in extracurricular activities and students’ GPAs and involved students attained higher GPAs than did students who were not involved.”(“ Lumpkin & Favor”). This proves again that sports truly do help are kids in school.
College scholarships, the attraction of every devoted sports player out there. Earning scholarships brings players together not only to step up their game, but to be enthusiastic about exceeding their academic goals. Colleges put down an amount of money to attract top athletes from high schools all over their state. Athletic meaning all sports, like golf, fencing, and water polo. Tons of schools and families support the aid colleges grant in their athletic scholarship programs, while others are against it, saying that it has too few people who are accepted and that it takes away money that everyone else has to pay for their classes. They don’t realize that players will be encouraged to do great academically, so that they may do great
He found that in a single nationally televised football or basketball game universities make more money than it would cost to pay for every player on that team’s tuition for the year. So do you think giving athletes a scholarship really makes a difference?
The minimum wage debate has been a hot topic over the past year, especially with the Presidential Election. This is a divisive topic that people rarely agree upon. There are essentially two sides you can take when it comes to this argument. Either people are for minimum wage or are against raising, or even having, a minimum wage. Proponents of the minimum wage are typically politicians who are lobbying for the vote of the people who feel that a minimum wage is critical to their wellbeing, and those who sympathize with people who earn “minimum wage”. Minimum wage is destroying America’s free market economy and someone needs to take action and find a better solution to this problem. Without anyone acting on this problem now, it can potentially be worse in the long run. Raising the minimum wage in the United States will do more harm than good to society because of the long-term effects.
Is it true that if you do something outside your free will, you should be held responsible? To clarify, doing something outside your free will means doing something you could not have done otherwise. To answer the question, I believe that yes, you should be held responsible. Ted Sider claims that you should not be held responsible, and uses the following example to support his claim: Suppose that you are kidnapped and then forced to commit a series of murders by the hand of the kidnapper. Sider’s example clearly shows that you should not be responsible for actions committed that you could not of otherwise, but I can provide an example where you can.
Pennies should not be made anymore. The penny costs more to make then they are worth. It’s not worth carrying around, it’s to bulky. The penny could round prices down.
In the text it states that, “If it is true that sports undermine the academic mission… we would expect to see a negative relationship between… athletics and academic achievement… Daniel H. Bowen and Jay P.G. find the opposite” (Bowen and Hitt 2). They are insisting that their research shows no negative relationships between education and athletics in school districts. This piece of information proves my stance by understanding the connection between school sports and academics.
High school sports make student athletes strive for better success in their education. Sure some Schools have a minimum G.P.A requirement of 2.0, and to get that all your classes have to be “C” or better. Well that’s better than letting them have a 1.0 and letting them play. It makes them have something worth studying for, For example my friend Bryan Garcia does not like school or work but he is always looking for ways to make his grades better so that he may play with the John F. Kennedy soccer team. Also not all the states in the United States of America have a G.P.A requirement to play in a sport activity, twelve out of the fifty states in the USA require a G.P.A to play."A High School Athlete 's GPA Vs. Average High School Student 's GPA." Everyday Life. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Feb. 2016.”Sports participation is associated with higher GPAs, lower dropout rates and stronger commitments to school compared to the average,non-athlete high school student”. Also they made a study for Kansas in 2008-2009 between athletes and non-athletes,Academic Performance Of Athletes And Non‐Athletes, and Page 41. COMPARING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES AND NON-ATHLETES IN KANSAS IN 2008-2009 (n.d.): n. pag. Web.”high school athletes earned higher grades, graduated at a higher rate, dropped out of school less frequently, and scored higher on state assessments than did non-athletes”. Student athletes have a greater chance of graduating with a 3.0 or more. They are more
According to opposing views, the argument has come up that some student-athletes receive scholarships to play a sport which pays for everything. This, however, is not true. Scholarships do not entirely
As you can see, athletes are more worried about their sport than school, and they spend way more time on sports than school in a week. In the Time Cover Story: It’s time to pay College Athletes, Richard Samuel said he was an “athlete-student” not a “student-athlete”(Samuel3). This proves that athletes spend way more time on sports than they do on school. For college athletes sports are the main reason why they are going to school, and they are usually hoping to go pro. Which mean they will want to spend more time on their sport than school.
Since education is so important today and so expensive, the scholarships that the NCAA allows schools to award to student athletes acts as money and compensation. Without scholarships, attending such schools could be impossible. In a report by Stephen Ross, an economist and research professor at Georgetown University, he writes that by the year 2000 college graduates were earning eighty percent more than high school graduates who did not go to college (Ross). Not only does college help one pursue an education but it helps one find a job and make money to help support themselves throughout life. If colleges did not offer athletic scholarships then many individuals would have lost out on an opportunity to improve themselves by going to college and receiving a higher education. Scholarships help bridge the gap between dreams and reality by allowing students to significantly reduce the financial burden that attending a college/university can have on a person or family. The American Dream can become a reality, all the hard work and sacrifices become worth it because through education anything is possible. However this notion that scholarships are the solution to the problem of paying student athletes is not well thought out. Firstly, scholarships cost the NCAA nothing. Secondly, scholarships fail to address the fact that the NCAA makes millions off the student athletes. Also, most student
It is 2017, and the amount of the student debt in the United States is spiraling out of control. 1.4 trillion dollars, those mountains of money are currently owed by 44 million Americans in the federal student loan debt. Moreover, this type of debt looms large all over the auto debt, even more than all the credit card debt, according to the press release of Consumer Federation of America. That is a number that helps to imagine how huge it is. Consequently, many Americans are heavily in debt in their twenties because they strive to achieve a higher education, which leads to many downside effects on the whole country; however, an effective solution to solve this problem would be for the government to give free college to help people be debt-free.
In the article “ As he promotes it, some questions Obama’s free community college idea” by Joanne Jacobs explains Obama’s idea of community college being free. The article mentions teachers and students opinion of Obama’s idea and the say whether the agree with his plan or not. There is many issues with this plan because it means that schools are going to be more crowded because more people are going to attend. There’s also some positive things about this because it means more people would be encourage to go to school and get a degree so that they can get a better job. Community college should not be free because from my personal experience I have observed that community college offers students a chance to go to school for free, if more people attend community colleges the school will be packed which will make the school add a waiting list for others.
Is college worth it? Many people have their opinions on the subject, most people saying college isn't worth it anymore. Most people can’t handle the debt and think that a degree isn’t worth that hassle of it all. I disagree with those people, a college tuition and an degree is totally worth it in the long run and it outweighs the debt.
