Did you know that more people in the United States have a pet cat than a dog? According to 2015-2016 APPA survey, there is an estimated 85.8 million pet cats compared to the estimated amount of 77.8 million pet dogs in America. There are around 8 million more cat pets than dogs. I don’t think this is a coincidence. Even though both cats and dogs are well-known for their ability to make their owners happier through various methods, such as reducing stress and helping to develop healthier habits and lifestyles, America still favors cats. Cats make better pets than dogs and in this essay I’ll show you why cats are the better pets.

Cats do not need nearly as much maintenance as dogs do. Of course, both pets require affection and love, but let us look at the requirements of owning both of these common pets. Part of a cat owner’s responsibility is to refill the cat’s water and food dishes once every 24 hours. Most cats know when to stop eating, so their owners do not need to refill the bowl at meal-time. If a cat owner has an indoor cat then they would need to clean out the cat’s litter box every three or four days. However if you own an indoor/outdoor cat like I do, or just an outdoor cat, litter boxes become obsolete, further decreasing the cat’s upkeep requirements. A yearly visit to the veterinarian is also strongly recommended. In total, the basic maintenance for a cat is daily food and water, changing litter if an indoor cat, an annual visit to the veterinarian, and the basic love and affection given to any pet. Contrastingly, dogs require much more upkeep. In addition to basic pet care needs, like food, water, and veterinarian care, most dogs require thirty to sixty minutes of exercise each day. Some indoor cats may need some encouragement to exercise, but if provided with adequate space and toys they can exercise themselves unlike dogs who need to be taken out on walks, which can be tiring especially if you are sick or have had a long day. Cats can live anywhere from 16 to 20 years, while dogs on average will only live 10 to 12 years and some larger breeds will have even shorter life-spans. Cats also don’t get as many diseases as often as dogs do, meaning they will have healthier lives. Unfortunately diseases in both dogs and cats seem to be on the rise for both pets, but at a much faster pace for dogs, so on average cats tend to be healthier and longer living than dogs. Cat owners can expect to enjoy their cat’s company for up to twice as long as a dog’s owner could, again making cats the better
