There are many views on whether or not servicemen and women should be able to keep the dogs that they trained after their time in the army is up. In my opinion, dogs should be kept after service is over. Even though these dogs really belong to the Marines, their handlers should have a say in what happens to the dog. If the handlers are hurt during war, the dogs could be sent to another serviceman or woman. This needs to change very soon.
The first reason that this should happen is that the dogs could get put down after service or killed doing their duty. The battlefields are dangerous to dogs as the enemies may be firing at humans or dogs, resulting in one or both of their deaths. After the dogs have worked for a while the military may find

Dogs may bring happiness to veterans and help them through the rough times in life. PTSD takes the life of copious amounts of veterans each year. If we want to treat PTSD we need to give veterans a friend to be by their side.
Some may argue that the dogs may bring back bad memories from the war. They may say that dogs do not help cure PTSD, but treat it only temporarily. In the article “Call of Duty”, Jose Armenta, a handler that lost parts of both of his legs after stepping on an IED, said that he beat himself up for a long time even after he was reunited with his dog. People against the idea of servicemen and women bringing dogs home think that there is only so much a dog can do. Some people believe that there is no cure or treatment for PTSD and that dogs would be of more use in the war zone.
People also argue that the dogs weren’t meant to be pets, only working dogs. Technically, the dogs still do belong to the Marines or military. Other soldiers need these dogs that the previous handlers had to leave. If every person who has served took their dogs with them, the military would soon be out of trained dogs. The article also states that it may cost up to $40,000 to train one of these dogs. This money was spent so these dogs could be properly trained and more money would be wasted if the dogs went with the
“If the fake service dog scam continues to escalate, real service dogs, and the privileges and respect they are entitled to, will be in jeopardy.” (Lichtenberg). Service dogs are needed for people with PTSD, Disabilities, Clinical Depression and GAD. A lot of people rely on these wonderful animals to help them get through the day. For example, people who use dogs to help with depression ,what if they get into a bad mood and attempt suicide, the dog will get someone's attention or can even call 911. Soldiers with PTSD suffer from flashbacks and the dog can calm soldiers down and help them know what is real and not. They are not meant to help people who just want to take their dog into the store or have “stressful” or “bad” days. We all get those. Service dogs are beneficial to the world and save lives, you should not be able to just order a kit off the Internet to “license” your dog to be a service dog. Lives are at risk and its wrong to mock the need of a service dog.
Veterans. All of those that have previously served our country in the United states military. Sadly much to often, these veterans come back from their tours physically and mentally damaged. Along with broken and or missing limbs, they are often diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD. I found the fascination for this illness and veterans while watching a new show on t.v. with my family. It’s called Dogs of War. This show is about a program called “Paws and Stripes” that connects veterans that are harshly affected on a daily basis to service dogs. I know that the concept of veterans and service dogs isnt a new concept, but what is different about this program is that they get the dogs from an animal shelter, then
TBI’s can be mild or severe and can affect a multitude of areas in a veteran’s life. When a veterans cognitive skills are affected the service dog is trained to respond to alert the veteran of hazards, alert them of nightmares/ terrors, and many more. Service dogs also help with the veterans balancing. When it is hard to get up out of a seat or walk the stairs, the service dog is always there to brace the veteran. Many veterans with TBI’s have headaches and forget many things. By having a service dog they can retrieve items, medication and snuggle with the veteran in the time of need. Service dogs also help with the emotional/behavioral aspect by being the companion the veteran needs and distracting them from situations that may make any occasion worse (Neurological Disorders,
The law of only dogs as service animals in public protects other people from getting sick or injured or having to clean up their messes.”service animal laws”.The law is supposed to help people but what about the other animals trained to become service animals?Does it become it pointless to train those other animals? If it is only in public places
This memo recommends that the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-MI) use its resources to support Michigan House Bill 4843. This bill attempts to address the need for the increasing number of Michigan Veterans affected by psychological diagnoses and the benefits that come from utilizing service dogs to decrease effects associated with these diagnoses for Veterans to function in society. It would allow a five-year pilot program to be established to record the significance service dogs have on decreasing psychological symptoms of Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. It would also record the number of Veterans who are able to return to normal functionality within society due to utilizing a service
“The VA’s reason for not covering service dogs for mental health disabilities is that the agency follows an evidence-based model and published studies or sound clinical evidence supporting the mental health benefits of service dogs is lacking,” Weinmeyer stated, (2). Weinmeyer said, “this lack of empirical evidence is not for the lack of effort” and “the VA actually has been working to obtain scientific evidence of service dogs for veterans suffering from mental health problems for several years”
The dog and owner may become depressed if they are split apart. Also the service men or women work very hard and they deserve some reward so by keeping their dogs would make them happy. If the dog and owner stay together, they may feel more safe if something bad happened to them in the past. Some people get PTSD after they are released from the service. By having the dog that was with him or her all the time, my relieve them from not having flash backs.
Service dog are very helpful to people in need that’s why they are so important. When the puppies are about 8-12 months they are away from their moms, so they can be trained to help people in need. According to “The wonders Veterans”,The dogs can help other people when they are not able to do things on their own, so they can help a lot. Also these dogs are very well trained and very smart.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, or depression, amongst many other disabilities deserve to be acknowledged because of the medical advancements in the past several years which support the effectiveness of service animals. These disabilities affect the everyday lives of thousands of people throughout the United States, which is why I believe that service animals can be a beneficial component that may boost a person’s endurance. In the article, Service Dog Training Program for Treatment of PTSD in Service Members, a study written with the United States Army, results concluded that service animals were deemed effective in their practices. The article reports that veterans and service members had an “increase in patience, impulse control, [and] emotional regulation” (Yount, et al.). As a helpful practice for disabled persons, it is a civil injustice to discriminate against a person with a service dog. To neglect a disabled person’s accessibility to basic public services in modern society is a violation of human rights. I think that the lack of accommodations for service animals and their handlers is an overlooked issue in society, which is why I believe that my research is a relevant issue in modern
Every year there are well over 7 million cases of PTSD that are announced (Kledzik). A small percentage of the people on Earth at some point in their life span will have some form of PTSD. A solution that will be able to help these people is commonly referred to as “man’s best friend.” For many years PTSD dogs have been useful to relieve the severe symptoms of this disorder. They have proven themselves to be more than just an animal. Post-traumatic stress disorder dogs are far beyond just man’s best friend; they protect the protectors far after the wars end.
In January 5th 2009, the Department of the Army released a memorandum announcing a new pet policy for families living on military base
Dogs are used since ancient times when the Corinthians defeated the Greeks, when Romas guard their legions and raised alarms, even they were used by Atila for protection. This is because of the loyalty dogs have to their owners, using this for motivation made the training easier for soldiers. Dogs really played a crucial role during World War I, in fact they proved to be just as dependable as
As Memorial Day rolls around, many websites are starting to write about this national holiday. American Thinker is one of these that has a plethora of stories on their website about this holiday. This article was published today in the section entitled recent articles. In the article it briefly talks about many issues and things to think about this memorial holiday. The first article that I read was about the dogs in the military and how we should remember the fallen dogs as we remember the fallen people in the military, especially Special Operation Forces multi-purpose canines (SOF MPC’s). Because the handlers of the military dogs get so attached to to their canine partners, it is hard when they get hurt in action and die. Many handlers pay Hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets to create
Each student is given a succession of shelter dogs to train. And here’s the inter-
Our Earth is filled with different type of species and one of the kinds of species there are is humans. As the humans get smarter and smarter there are many conflicts occur like WWI and WWII. But how has using a military working dog (MWD) on the battlefield have changed over time from WWII to present and how it going to change in future.
