In the argumentative article “Federal gun control laws could reduce deaths up to 90 percent, study says”, Jason Thomson, staff at Christian Science Monitor, argues that implementing gun control laws could cut gun-related deaths by nearly 90%. He develops the claim by first stating his claim and a vague description of the research he is referencing, Then, he goes into detail about the study supporting his claim and how they came to their conclusion. Then, towards the end of the article, he presents a counterclaim, stating that gun control could never cut America’s massacre rates by this much because of other factors which were not measured. The author’s purpose is to present evidence from a recent, credible study in order to reason that gun
Texas Governor Greg Abbott sought consensus on firearms in a second round of talks on preventing gun violence on campus on Wednesday and may look at “red flag laws” to keep guns out of the hands of people deemed by a judge to be danger to themselves or others.
Jill Silos-Rooney’s current professional associations include Bethel Woods Center for the Arts., MassBay Community College, and Oxford University Press. She begins her article, “The Top 3 Liberal Arguments for Gun Control”, with an anecdote about a nine-year-old girl who accidentally killed her gun instructor with an Uzi and proceeds to list off two counterarguments and rebuttals and three assertions for gun control in her Thought Co. article, covering what she believes the best arguments for said gun control are. Her strongest pieces of evidence that support her central claim that “America Needs More Gun Control” (page 1) are “Australia, which has a similar frontier history to that of the United
Every year thirty-thousand Americans die from guns while others have the “privilege” to end up with a disability rather than dying. The men and women who are diagnosed with a mental illness and obtain guns often commit suicide and crimes such as mass shootings, and murders. Because health care providers don't report, the mental illnesses of many people to the FBI, these people are able to pass a background check when they attempt to purchase a gun. Criminals now have more access than ever to gus because of the unlicensed gun sellers at the gun shows. Although the second amendment allows people the right to bear arms, it has become easy for the mentally ill and criminals to acquire guns and gun control should be strengthened for this very reason.
In the discussion of gun control, one of the main controversial issues is whether or not there should be more or less regulations put on firearms. In addition, another issue that comes up is whether or not those regulations will have a benefit on society. One one hand, gun regulation proponents believe that stricter regulations restricting the types of firearms and ammunition that can be purchased will reduce the amounts of crimes and make society safer. One the other hand, gun regulation opponents argue that stricter regulations infringe on the rights of citizens and only endanger society more. So what is the answer to the question? Should there be stricter
Throughout the history of the United States of America there has been debate on gun control. The debate has become even more relevant as more semi-automatic assault rifles are being sold and the amount of shootings we have been having, especially in this last month. There are a variety of views one can take on this argument. Many conservatives have been saying that more gun control is not necessary as it’s not the guns killing the people, it’s the people pulling the trigger that are killing innocent lives. On the other hand, people who are more liberal would like to see legislation passed that would put control on the sale of firearms as keeping weapons out of the hands of dangerous people who will willingly pull the
Gun control in the United States has been a hot debate for years. In the year 2015 there were 372 mass shootings in the United States ( (Rienzi, 2016), sparking even more debate. 22% of Americans own firearms (Rienzi, 2016) and firmly believe in the second amendment of the constitution. Surely, an agreement on gun law reform can be met while also protecting the second amendment. Right?
“Gun control advocates might think that the world would be a better place if those people and the ones you’re about to read about were dead and the people menacing them had gotten away with their crimes” (Hawkins). John Hawkins ridiculously states that gun control advocates have no sympathy and care for people innocently killed by murderers. This contradicts what many people believe when many truly think that the innocents and the victims should have remorse. John Hawkins strongly asserts his conviction on that gun saves lives in his article “10 stories that prove guns save lives,” which presents a background on political issues regarding the second amendment and provides ten anecdotal stories supporting his statement that gun saves lives.
The argument of gun control has become a debate of society. There is a lot of emotional rhetoric behind this debate. Gun control will not work as statistics, history (with other foreign countries), and common sense have shown. Gun laws will not significantly modify the already false accusations made against guns and gun violence.
Sandy Hook Elementary. Aurora, Colorado. San Bernardino, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Orlando, Florida. (Words with Negative Connotation) These are just some of the biggest mass shootings that have swept America in the past few years. Hundreds of lives are lost each year to gun related violence in the United States alone. Gun control has been a topic in our country since our founding fathers adopted the second amendment to the US constitution. Although recently controversy has sparked to an all-new extent in America due to the recent spike in mass shootings and gun related homicides. So many families and loves ones are affected each year in the United States because of gun related violence and other mass killing events, because of these events gun control laws need to be revamped and strengthened in American in order to protect the citizens.
Advocates of gun control state that control of firearms would prevent crime. This statement is flawed. Alexia Cooper a statistian for the Uniform Crime Reports of the Federal Bureau of Investigation states, “The cities with the highest crime rates are also the cities with the strictest gun control laws” [6]. In Washington D.C., it is almost impossible for a civilian to own firearms, yet it is universally seen as the murder capital of the United States. Vermont, a state where civilians do not need a license to carry firearms, as the best crime rate in the nation. Since Texas liberalized its concealed carry laws, crime rates have dropped 8.5 percent. All these statistics are not coincidences, they are cold hard truth that gun control does not
The gun control debate in the US is often contentious and politically divisive. And with upcoming elections always looming in the near future, we will continue hearing a great deal from the media as well as politicians about what should or should not be done about “too many guns” in our society. Unfortunately, too many Americans do not take time to truly understand the issues and the reasoning behind both sides of the controversy. To help get a clearer perspective of the problem, there are two very short, but well written pro/con pieces, regarding the debate, by Mitch Albom and Thomas Sowell. Each presents his own rationale for what should be done about gun control.
Different people have different opinions on the topic of bearing weapons. Some people believe that owning of weapons such as guns is good because it will help them against criminals while others feel that they should be banned. However, in June 2008, in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, the United States Supreme Court ruled that people were allowed to keep guns for self-defense (Neily III, 2010). This was one of the most important rulings on gun rights since the adoption of Second Amendment in 1791 on Bill of Rights. The second Amendment of United States Constitution states that in a Free State, peoples’ right to bear and keep arms shall not be infringed. There have been many cases when the court has been engaged in interpreting the
One of the most debated and talked about issues going on today concerns gun control. There are many different aspects being brought up with concern to gun control. One of the biggest this past year especially here in Texas is the issue of allow-ing conceal carry on college campuses. College campuses are usually gun free zones, but with so many shootings happening on campuses some want to be allowed to carry. A lot of people are for infringing upon a person’s constitutional right to life and
Gun control in the United States is a very controversial topic in today’s political society, leaving the nation divided into two sides with two strongly opinionated beliefs. This all started with the increase in the amount of mass shootings and an overall increase in gun violence. The two sides consist of the liberal point of view and the conservative point of view. The liberals believe that the availability of firearms to the people in the country is a major issue, and that the U.S. government is at fault for the mass shootings due to the lenient regulations on guns. In retaliation, the conservatives argue that having a gun is a God given right, that the Second Amendment of The Constitution. Although the availability of guns is seen to be
