Argumentative (Persuasive) Essay Guidelines

The goal of persuasive essays are to utilize certain rhetorical strategies and techniques in order to make the audience adopt their specific viewpoint over different ones. Some examples of these strategies include anecdotes, statistics, analogies, metaphors, similes, allusion, and repetition. The proper use of these techniques will make an essay easier to follow for the audience, thus making the argument more effective. Writers should also include the Aristotelian triangle of appeals, which are logos, pathos, and ethos, and use them effectively in order to persuade the audience to agree with the argument being made. Two persuasive essays that can be compared are “Terror’s Purse Strings”, by Dana Thomas, and “Sweatshop Oppression”, by Rajeev Ravisankar. These essays both address similar topics, but there are differences in how the authors approach their arguments.

Previously I would have defined an argument as a heated debate between two parties about who was "right," and who was, "wrong," about a specific subject. Now however, I understand that arguments (at least effective ones) are meant to be rhetorical. Effective arguments take advantage of logical appeals that we've learned about in our reading called, "Ethos, Logos, and Pathos." As a “Advanced Placement” student during high school much of my time was spent writing essays on various topics and challenging prompts. Many of my essays centered around structuring supportive arguments to push or pull the audience in my direction of belief. Three controversial topics that I chose to discuss were animal testing, lowering the drinking age, and gun control. Even though expository essays and persuasive essays both have research and a thesis statement, they are different in the way that expository explains while persuasive argues.
