Abortion or Something “The technician had grown quiet. She just kept printing picture after picture and pressing the wand deeper into the gel on my stomach,” (Cohen). Rebecca Cohen would soon find out her baby’s brain had been destroyed. At 21 weeks she chose to have an abortion and said it was the best of only horrible options (Cohen). Cohen and every other woman should have the option to terminate their pregnancies. Women should be able to abort their fetuses without restriction. Women should have the right to decide if they want to carry their pregnancy to term. They should decide what happens to their body. Forty-two years ago the Supreme Court guaranteed freedom of choice (States' Abortion Restrictions Erode Freedom of Choice). The Freedom of Choice Act allows women to terminate their pregnancies. Since that ruling, states have been enacting restrictive laws against abortion. From 2010 to September of 2015, 280 restrictive abortion laws have been passed (States' Abortion Restrictions Erode Freedom of Choice). Therapeutic abortion is defined as abortion induced when pregnancy constitutes a threat to the physical or mental health of the mother (Therapeutic Abortion). Why would a woman not be allowed to terminate her pregnancy if it was going to result in her death? Even if the mother were to survive carrying to term could cause substantial harm to some potential mothers. If a baby had a severe abnormality such as the aforementioned condition Rebecca Cohen’s baby had it may cause psychological damage to the mother (Cohen). Some parents may not be able to financially support a baby, and having the baby could send them into crippling debt. Overall women should be able to abort their babies if they are going to harm
