Abortion or Something “The technician had grown quiet. She just kept printing picture after picture and pressing the wand deeper into the gel on my stomach,” (Cohen). Rebecca Cohen would soon find out her baby’s brain had been destroyed. At 21 weeks she chose to have an abortion and said it was the best of only horrible options (Cohen). Cohen and every other woman should have the option to terminate their pregnancies. Women should be able to abort their fetuses without restriction. Women should have the right to decide if they want to carry their pregnancy to term. They should decide what happens to their body. Forty-two years ago the Supreme Court guaranteed freedom of choice (States' Abortion Restrictions Erode Freedom of Choice). The Freedom of Choice Act allows women to terminate their pregnancies. Since that ruling, states have been enacting restrictive laws against abortion. From 2010 to September of 2015, 280 restrictive abortion laws have been passed (States' Abortion Restrictions Erode Freedom of Choice). These restrictions dissolve the Freedom of Choice Act, and should not have been implemented. …show more content…
Therapeutic abortion is defined as abortion induced when pregnancy constitutes a threat to the physical or mental health of the mother (Therapeutic Abortion). Why would a woman not be allowed to terminate her pregnancy if it was going to result in her death? Even if the mother were to survive carrying to term could cause substantial harm to some potential mothers. If a baby had a severe abnormality such as the aforementioned condition Rebecca Cohen’s baby had it may cause psychological damage to the mother (Cohen). Some parents may not be able to financially support a baby, and having the baby could send them into crippling debt. Overall women should be able to abort their babies if they are going to harm
For centuries, a woman’s right to abortion has been argued. Individuals with pro-life and anti-abortion beliefs think abortion is murder. While others feel it to be a women’s moral right, a personal privacy right that has been implied in the United States Constitution. I strongly feel that a woman has the right to an abortion. However, the termination of a pregnancy is not something to be taken lightly, I believe the states should have some sort of regulations in place to ensure the woman’s safety and welfare of the potential child.
Abortion is one the most controversial topics in the United States. The issue at hand is should abortion be legal or not. It is highly debated with in both media and politics. According to History Channel, “Supreme Court legalizes abortion”, in 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court Case Roe V. Wade ruled that women have the constitutional right to privacy, thus legalizing abortion. This law gave women the right to terminate a pregnancy during the first two trimesters. This sparked huge controversy between pro-life and pro-choice believers. Both pro-life and pro-choice have numerous arguments to justify their opinions. In a report done by WebMD, “Abortion-Reasons Women Choose Abortion,” nine out of ten abortions are performed within the first twelve weeks. Abortion should be legal because it is a women’s constitutional right, mental and physical health, and other.
In cases where the baby cannot survive outside of the mother and the mother’s health is in danger, the state has the right to protect the health of the mother and may regulate the procedure. The Justices debated over what should be the timeframe of when aborting can happen. Some suggested up till the point of viability, abortions can occur. others said at the end of the first trimester. However, both are ambiguous and arbitrary, so they proposed abandoning frameworks based on the age of the fetus and instead allowing states to regulate the procedure based on its safety for the
There is a concern among many, that it is not the woman’s decision to terminate the life of their unborn child. Fetuses are advocated for because decision making is out of their control. One of the main arguments is that the unborn child will not have the opportunity to live the life it deserves and because of that, women that go through the process of abortion will regret their decision. This is understandable, because it is a difficult option to pursue, not health-wise, but emotionally a devastation for some. Along
The right of a women to control her reproductive decision is highly debated in the US because of the idea that abortions, to some people, are considered murder. A woman’s ability to make reproductive choices is a fundamental right protected by the
According to “Facts on Late-Term Abortion” by Meg Brannagan, more than 1 million abortions are performed in the United States per year. Roughly 12,000 abortions are third-term abortions, meaning they occur after 21 weeks of gestation. The most common procedure for third term abortions is called a dilation and evacuation surgery. During this procedure, an abortion specialist terminates the fetus with a shot through the mother's stomach and into the baby’s brain. Later, after three days have passed, physicians remove the fetus in pieces. According to these facts, the termination of a baby after 20 weeks is not only inhumane and cruel, but puts the mother at severe risk of infection, and therefore, should not be allowed in the United States of America.
For hundreds of years, women have been fighting for one basic thing; women want to be equals and have the rights to their lives and bodies. Women have been fighting for the right to own property, to vote, to have equal pay and to have reproductive rights. While each has been a struggle, reproductive rights are one of the most controversial, argued topics. It is more widely accepted for men to walk away from a pregnancy, but women do not have the same option without being hassled at every turn. Whether agreed on morally or not, a woman should have a choice in having an abortion or carrying to the point of viability, meaning when a fetus can sustain life outside the womb.
In our society, everyone has their own opinion about everything. This topic just so happens to be one of those. Abortion is a very touchy subject to some people. Some people are pro-choice, others are pro-life. Some are caught in the middle. Some people think depending on the situation, it should be okay. People base their opinions on their religion, race, culture, political views, and how they were raised. I was raised pro-life depending on the situation. Pro-choice means it is the mother’s choice to get an abortion. Pro-life means they are completely against abortion. Is it a living person? Should it be illegal? Is it okay depending on the situation? Everyone has a different opinion. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. Abortions
It could be argued that as the child could not possibly survive independently of the mother, at least before approximately four months into the pregnancy, it is not yet an independent human being, but an attachment of the mother, therefore she should be allowed to terminate it, if this is what she wants to do to herself, as opposed to when the child is physically independent of the mother, when any potentially life ending action against it would be inflicted upon the child directly, not its mother (Kellough 35).
Jeremiah 1:5 says, ”Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nation's.” Abortion is a very sensitive topic to talk about. Most people are uncomfortable talking about abortion. Some people are against abortion and some are with abortion. In my opinion, I do not agree with abortion. There are many questions asked from both opposing sides when you talk about abortion. Some people ask when human life begins and when life becomes valuable. In these next paragraphs there will be arguments from both the pro abortion and against abortion.
The right to life is the most basic and important right that we have. In the past two hundred years, over one million Americans have died for their country. Monuments have been built and speeches have been delivered, honoring these American heroes. America is now engaged in a war where there are no heroes, no monuments or tributes - only victims. Our society has declared war on its most helpless members - our unborn children. Since that war was declared on January 22, 1973, there have been over 35 million deaths.
Does a women’s right to choose to have an abortion outweigh a baby’s right to be born? The controversy at hand is whether the rights of a women outweigh the rights of a baby, and whether a mother should be given the rights to pursue a procedure like an abortion. To clarify an abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy in which a doctor uses a vacuum and suction to suck out a fetus from the uterus. The issue is whether the fetus who has the potential to be a rational, productive human being has the unequivocal rights of any other human being and whether he or she should be protected from, in every sense of the word, murder. The argument made by abortionfacts.com a nonprofit Christian pro-life education organization, is that
This report is written to study whether the act of selective abortion based on congenital defects can or cannot be justified. The justification of selective abortion based on congenital defects has become a globally debated topic.
This is incorrect because there is a small life within a woman's womb at this point, it is no longer simply her body, this becomes a shared residence, one where a different growing body now lives. Along these lines, it is also incredibly unnatural and harmful to a woman's body at this point to remove the growing fetus. Some very immediate potential complications of an abortion would include heavy bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion, sepsis, anesthesia, damage to the cervix, scarring of the uterine lining, uterine perforation, damage to internal organs, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, and even death. The list continues with the emotional complications such as eating disorders, relationship problems, guilt, depression, flashbacks of abortion, suicidal thoughts, sexual dysfunction, alcohol and drug abuse (studentforlife.org). The ugly truth is that a mother will form a both physical and emotional bond with her child, even before she is aware of the pregnancy, this bond is not easily erased. A woman may even experience complications, long after an abortion, including breast cancer, cervical, ovarian, and liver cancer, ectopic pregnancy and placenta previa. If this is what is meant by "your body, your choice" it doesn't add up that any woman would choose
To deny a woman the right to terminate her pregnancy is akin to robbing her of any ability to make decisions about her body, her self, and her future. The woman is effectively forced, against her will, to assume an identity and a future that she normally would have avoided. This type of coersion can permanently damage a persons emotional and psychological health. The one thing that makes each of us an individual is our decision making freedom and powers regarding our own future and actions. But when we are robbed of our ability to make our own decisions about our future, our self, and our identity, then we are robbed of our most essential and valuable treasure…our self. If a woman wishes to obtain an early term abortion…to terminate a pregnancy…then she must be allowed to choose this option. If she id denied an abortion, then both her and the future child will suffer tremendously. Please stop viewing abortion as something that you should have sole control over. A person’s body is their own, not yours. It is threatening and invasive when others attempt to direct the lives of their peers. Rather supporting the tyrannical idea of forced childbirth, perhaps you ought to consider the more moderate concept that all people should be able to choose the future of their bodies and reproductive functions. I advocate neither abortion nor
