However, Thomsen et al. (2012) has a different conclusion and argued that diversity is not without its challenges. Diversity can also result in lower levels of cohesiveness and team work. This can lead to inability to agree on mutual goals, increased conflict and reduced information sharing. The empirical evidence (Bohren & Odegard, 2006; Wang et al., 2010; Ahern & Dittmar, 2010) does not support the idea that there is a business case for board diversity. They concluded that if anything, the available and emerging literature finds negative performance effects of
Diversity is a great thing for a company to have. Having a diverse workforce creates a work environment with a lot of different opinions and beliefs. Varying opinions about how to handle a situation, makes a discussion necessary to choose the best one which means that the best idea should be picked. For an example, consider a marketing firm that is trying to make their client’s business appeal to a wider variety of customers. In this situation, diversity would be a great thing because each diverse employee should have an idea of how to market to their demographic. That is just one example of many where diversity would be a great thing to have within an organization.
The way in which an organization tackles diversity determines its negative or positive outcome. All the 5 companies agreed that diversity has contributed to their success. Some barriers were identified in managing diversity like the difficulties faced by women in managing the work and family, fear of discrimination, resistance to change, diversity is not seen as an organizational priority, resistance to change and unsupportive working environment for diverse employees. Diversity contributes to more productivity but if not properly managed could hinder success.

Cognitive outcomes of diversity link to competitive advantages in terms of team performance (Griffith, & Dunham, 2015). The difference of ethnicity and nationality improve the quality of ideas and level of communication on complex tasks. Positive outcomes personally occur when heterogeneous groups are able to consider a greater variety of perspectives leading to realistic and sophisticated analogies of issues and decision-making and problem-solving. Cultural differences gain a wider variety of perspectives.
The alternative is to ignore the important role that diversity can play in enhancing organizational performance and losing the opportunity of developing a valuable competitive advantage.--(P. 218)
Diversity can affect groups in many ways when it comes to performance. If a diverse group cannot overcome their differences than the performance of the group will take a hit. When we look at diversity, some things that people may have to get over include these differences: age, gender, race and ethnicity, disabilities, tenure, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, and intellectual and physical abilities. One of the effects of diversity on a group’s performance could be that of discrimination within the group leading to group members having conflicts or disengaging to the point of there being little to no productivity. An example would be that a lot of people think older employees are incapable of being as productive as their
With technology evolving consistently, the organizations have become diversified in terms of their presence, resource allocation and several other factors. Though, the diversity has resulted in several benefits in terms of the business, there have been situations where diversity is deemed responsible for the failure of projects and several other pitfalls in the business. This paper illustrates the role of diversity on the team dynamics based on the case study which is associated with Sun Microsystems were the diversity had led to the downfall in a critical project.
‘’The final property of groups we consider is diversity in the group’s membership, or the degree to which members of the group are similar to, or different from, one another’’. (Oxford dictionary, n.d.). There are two types of diversity: Surface-level diversity – in observable characteristics such as national origin, race and gender; and deep-level diversity ¬¬¬– underlying attitudes, values, and opinions. One researcher argued, ‘the mere presence of diversity you can see, such as a person’s race or gender, actually cues a team that there’s likely to be differences of opinion.’ (Rigoglioso, 2006). Although those differences can lead to a conflict, they could also provide an opportunity to solve problems in unique ways. A study that did research
Diversity in team work is the incorporation of each individual’s uniqueness they present to the group. With each individual bringing forth their own thought process, workforce, motivation, and leadership skills, there is a better chance of being innovative and creative. Diversity can have it’s positive and negative effects on a group. Positive effects that diversity has helped with our group are experiences, knowledge, and perspective. These experiences had led to knowledge, and for some extensive knowledge.
For example, a company can use board members with international experience to expose international obligations or foreign partner’s characteristics, which can contribute to competitive advantages of the company. However, there is no evidence that presence of male directors or non-diversity will result in the company’s failure. The company should balance between diversity and knowledge background in selections of board members.

There is extensive research on board composition and the importance it places on different aspects of organisation performance. (Kang H, et al 2007).
