The short story Where are you going, Where have you been? by Joyce Carol Oates is a chilling tale of teen abduction. Although horrifying, the story didn’t end like I thought it would on my first read through. Connie isn’t carried away by her abductor kicking and screaming, nor dragged away unconscious. While not exactly based on her own freewill, she chooses to go. Connie, who has desperately tried to be older than she was, is quickly transformed into real adulthood and is forced to make the first decision of her adult life, which regrettably, is likely her last. From the very beginning we know Connie to be very concerned with her appearance. We are told she has a “nervous giggling habit” of checking herself out in mirrors and that “she knew she was pretty and that was everything” (Lawn 369). Her number one concern seemed to be with boys. While I don’t think this is entirely unheard of for young teenage girls, it is a definite sign of immaturity. …show more content…

Instead of assessing a possible threat, she was more concerned with her hair and “how bad she looked” (Lawn 372). She may have had a chance here to call the police before even making any contact with Arnold. She chose instead to come to the door and entertain the uninvited guests. She only really began to realize the danger she was in when she noticed that Ellie, Arnold’s passenger, looked to be even older than Arnold, about forty (Lawn 377). Only then does she consider calling the police, but unfortunately it is already too late. When she does make the dash to the phone to call the police, she is unable to dial anything. The text is pretty unclear about what actually happened during this scene. I don’t think that Arnold Friend physically intervened here. I believe that she was simply overcome by fear and went into a state of shock, screaming and calling out for her mother (Lawn 382). I believe this to be the last moment of her
