Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando is one of the top hospitals in the country for children. They have received numerous awards over the years and consistently rank in the top 50 pediatric hospitals in the United States. Arnold Palmer Hospital was recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report and received the following rankings:
• #31 in Urology
• #39 in Orthopedics
• #45 in Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery
• #45 in Diabetes and Endocrinology
• #48 in Cardiology and Heart Surgery
In addition to their focus on providing the best medical services possible to their patients Arnold Palmer Hospital has also reviewed their internal inventory processes and implemented Just in Time and Lean inventory strategies. This has allowed them to operate at a much more efficient and cost effective level.
Being able to apply these methods to the hospital and surgery environment is a great example of how JIT can be used in non-manufacturing industries. When I think of everything that is needed from start to finish for a surgery and how important each of those items are, JIT is not something that immediately pops into my head. However, the more I think about it the more I see how JIT can be utilized as a valuable tool. Improving delivery times, reducing waste and defects, less inventory to store and track and less time spent on inspecting inventory received are perfect examples of why JIT should be used in this type of environment.
Most non-emergency surgeries are scheduled
The JIT approach to manufacturing involves timing the delivery of resources so that they arrive just when needed. Inventory optimization models help the firm determine how many of which items in which sizes should be delivered to each specific store during twice-weekly shipments, ensuring that each store is stocked with just what it needs. Trucks serve destinations that can be reached
In mid-April 2000, Sherri Worth was faced with some very unsettling news about Pate Memorial Clinic’s future with a competitor potentially moving into the area. Worth was the assistant administrator at Pate Memorial Hospital (PMH) and was also responsible for the Pate Health Clinic (PHC). A study by the competitor was being done to see whether sufficient demand existed to establish a clinic 5 blocks north of PHC. The two biggest concerns in regards to the new competition were:
In order to improve the shipping and handling process for the custom surgical packs, I feel that the first step should be evaluating the exact amount of inventory needed for one day operations. Once the exact amount has been accounted for, APH’s management department can use this data to help reduce the quantity of packs in the buffer from one day supply to smaller a number of packs, thus decreasing the expense. This action helps circle back to the main functionary goal of the JIT method, which is the elimination of waste within the company/organization
b. What will its future value be if the CD pays 5 percent interest? If it pays 15 percent interest?
Lastly, the just-in-time (JIT) approach is an operating philosophy that requires that all resources, including materials, personnel, and facilities, be acquired and used only as needed (Mazumder, 2007). The JIT approach works great for manufacturing companies because of their common classes of material that they use which are raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods (Mazumber, 2007). According to JIT concept raw materials are received just in time to go into production, manufactured parts are completed just in time to be assembled into products, and products are completed just in time to be shipped to customers (Mazumber, 2007). The ASC (Ambulatory Surgical Center) provides a variety of career opportunities. Basically, a ASC is a health care facility where surgical procedures not requiring an overnight hospital stay are performed. I have been able to shadow several jobs within the ASC. Out of all the careers, a PACU nurse sparked an interest. PACU Nurses are specialized to work in the post anesthesia care unit. They provide intensive care and treatment for patients who have gone under anesthesia. PACU RNs can also be referred to as a recovery room nurse.
Ambulatory Surgical Center provides same-day surgical care that includes diagnostic and preventive procedures. Ambulatory Surgical Center treats only patients who have already seen a health care provider and selected surgery as the appropriate treatment for their condition. Ambulatory Surgical Center must be certified and approved to enter into a written agreement with CMS. Ambulatory Surgical Center has a unique set of regulation and standards under the Medicare and Medicaid program or other third party payers. The outpatient payment provides a set payment for each surgical procedure. They must be licensed and inspected by the State and Federal government to see if they meet standards Certified facility standers.
The passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, created a paradigm shift in the way health care is delivered to its patients creating a greater emphasis on lowering costs while improving outcomes (Cascardo, 2014). One strategy to contain costs while improving the quality of patient care, thus outcomes, is transitioning outpatient surgeries from acute care hospitals to ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). ASCs provide same day surgical care, as well as diagnostic and preventive procedures (ASCA, n.d.).
The Seton Joint Ventures update was posted to BoardEffect for preview prior one week prior to the committee meeting.
Ambulatory Surgical Center is a distinct entity which render surgical procedures to patients who are not required to be hospitalized as the expected duration of hospital stay is less than 24 hours from the patient admission. ASCs provide services and procedures in a convenient and safe manner outside the hospital setting with greatest benefit being the providing services on an outpatient basis, thus reducing the challenges encountered in inpatient facilities such as scheduling delays, limited operating room availability, slow operating room turnover, etc. and with significant cost-savings for procedures when compared to procedures provided in a hospital setting. Development of Ambulatory Surgical
A third disadvantage of applying JIC manufacturing operations is having lower quality assurance methods and even further, lower customer satisfaction (“Just-in-case and just-in-time…”). While the just-in-case system is beneficial in
“The Process Improvement in Stanford Hospital’s Operating Room” case has many issues when it comes to regards to its existing instrument provisioning process taking place within the Operating Room (OR) of Stanford’s Hospital. This process entails getting instruments ready for a surgery in the OR and the cleansing of these instruments afterwards; however, there are many problems that arise in this process.
As argued by Lubben (1988), JIT allows businesses to have better management since this ensures that there is no loss as there is sufficient number of clients requiring the equipment. This reduces her to deal with huge deliveries when the clients’ numbers are not increasing. (Lubben, 1988, p.4) also suggested the idea of JIT that “... major elements of manufacturing – capital, equipment and labour are made available only in the amount required and at the time required to do the job.” So it is a good practice by utilising JIT approach as it reduces wastes and ensure the correct amount of equipment is available (Lubben,
Background - The Arnold Palmer Hospital is 1 158-bed paediatric hospital located in Orlando, Florida; part of the Arnold Palmer Medical Foundation and rated as one of the nation's Top paediatric hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. It is the only hospital in all of central Florida with an emergency/trauma center dedicated specifically to pediatric patients. It opened in 1989, and in 2006 became a children's hospital focused solely on
According to [5], Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory management enables an organization to gain competitive advantage by not having a large or excessive amount of inventory in warehouse. The organization only needs to order the parts when they are actually needed and new materials are produced only when old materials have finished. One advantage of adopting this strategy is that there will be no excess of inventory that needs to be stored and hence the inventory levels will be reduced as well as the cost of carrying and storing goods. One major disadvantage of this is that the organization will expose it in the risk of ordering problems for example a supplier is not able to provide parts on time. The result of this is that the organization cannot fulfill the order and contributes to customer dissatisfaction.
