Arranged: Movie Analysis

With Film Analysis comes the analyzation of films and movies that depict narrative structure, cultural context, the evaluation of discourse, and many other approaches. The film, “Friday” (1995), is a comedy and drama that displays the relationship between two childhood friends growing up in an impoverished neighborhood. These two friends became affiliated with a neighborhoods drug dealer, and were startled and clueless as to how they were going to come up with the money they owed him by the end of the night! The characterization, setting, and conflicts are the three main elements, in which are portrayed can indicate the analyzation of contributing a larger meaning of this particular film.

Based off Charles Webb’s 1963 novel by the same name, The Graduate is an American romantic comedy/drama released in the United States on December 21, 1967 starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, and William Daniels. The film was directed by Mike Nichols, produced by Lawrence Turman and the screenplay written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham. The film was produced by Lawrence Turman/Mike Nichols productions starting in March of 1967. Mike Nichols has also directed other well known films such as Catch-22 (1970), Working Girl (1988), and more recently Closer (2004). The film was distributed by AVCO Embassy Pictures nationally and United Artists internationally. AVCO Embassy Pictures studio, founded by Joseph E. Levine, the films executive producer, also claims production/distribution for other hit films such as Godzilla, King of Monsters! (1956), The Fog (1980), and Prom Night (1980). The movie was well received due to its $104 million dollar box office opening tab. The score was produced by Dave Grusin and the songs written by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

Jean-Marc Vallee’s 2014 film Wild is based off of Cheryl Stryaed’s memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail”. The film changes the genre by having a woman as the main character in a man vs. nature situation a rare chage from the typical hero. Vallee had a budget of $15,000,00 for the film and it brought in $4,112,752 on opening weekend, January 30, 2015. Wild, was nominated for many prestigious awards and won few. (imbd). In a initial review of the film published in The New York Times, noted film critic A. O. Scott wrote, “The film adaptation of her book — itself already a classic of wilderness writing and modern feminism — provides another reason to be grateful that she did”. A League of Their Own (Marshall, 1992) explicitly characterizes an American era when a woman’s place was in the home. Even our modern perspective implicitly follows suit. Although women have gained rights and freedoms since the 1930’s, sexism remains prevalent in America. This film offers an illustration when men went to war and big business men utilized women as temporary replacements in factories, sports, and so on. Here, course concepts, such as gender socialization, gender expressions, role stereotypes, emotion expressions, and language, correspond to the film’s characters and themes.

The 2012 movie Argo is based off of a true event in 1979. During the Iranian Civil War, President Jimmy Carter gives the Iranian Shah refuge in the U.S. due to his illness. In retaliation, Iranian activists invade the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran and the staff are taken as hostages. This is famously known as the Iranian hostage crises. Although six of the staff members escape and are taken in by the Canadian Ambassador. Determined to rescue the six, Tony Mendez, who is our main character, from the CIA is brought in because of his expertise. After talking to his son one day while watching a science fiction program on TV, he comes up the idea to go into Iran, under the guise of Canadians

Throughout the film Do the Right Thing, we continuously observe racial conflict that builds up to such an extreme point that it leads to a fight for power. This movie portrays the struggles and realities of a neighborhood with white and black African American people. This can be seen in many instances for example when Buggin ' Out, Radio Raheem, and Smiley march into Sal 's and demand that Sal change the Wall of Fame. Another vital instance shows the height of power struggle. It is when the huge fight starts in the street and results in Raheem being killed by a white police officer.

During the end of the 3rd Century, the Playwright Plautus wrote many of the first Roman comedies. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical comedy film adaptation of Plautus's comedies.Set in ancient Rome, many aspects of Roman theatre, including stock characters, were included in the film’s production. While the film is based off of multiple comedies, Plautus's Pseudolus character Calidorus is nearly identical to the film’s Hero. During the time Pseudolus was written, the Crisis of the Third Century led to up to 25% of Roman population being comprised of slaves(Southern). The Frontline film Separate and Unequal discussed about creating a new school system; however, there are opposition by others who wants to maintain the current school system. If we look at the perspectives of the two groups, it is understandable in why there is support and opposition from the people of the city. The supporters of the new system wants a system that can provide better opportunities for their children without any violence. As the film claimed “the school was not teaching and were only babysitting the children”, which was likely a reason why there was a need for a new school system. With the chaotic and uncontrollable situation in the current system, many supporters have push forward the idea of a new system in a new city. From

Accommodations changes how a student learns the material.modification changes what a student is Taught or expected to learn. An example of an accommodation is if Dory has an issue with reading she would be given the option to listen to an audio recording of a text. Where as in a modification Dory would be a sign a shorter or much more easier reading passage.

The film “Arranged” touches on many aspects that the readings discussed, and offers new insight into conservative religions and the interactions between people of different faiths. One particularly interesting aspect of the movie was the tension that the two women – especially Rochel – experienced. First there’s the tension within a religion: Rochel is really dissatisfied (at least at first) with the matchmaking process and says she doesn’t want to do it anymore. However, her mother is aghast to hear that and asks her to think about her family, because if Rochel doesn’t get married it hurts her sister’s marriage prospects and hurts the family’s reputation. In some way, this makes it seem like there’s a lack of personal choice in this arranged marriage system. And even though Rochel ends up with someone she really likes, it’s not truly because of the arranged marriage system – it’s because she meets Gideon in real life and Nasira is kind enough to help her and go around the traditional matchmaking process.

Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” shows a multilayered social concern ranging from alienation to the modern age. It also reflects the psychological side of human being that undergoes exploitation for prolonged period. The movie underlines the deterioration of the human mind under the pressure of a monotonous mechanical industrial world. Psychologically, the Tramp, who is the central character of the movie, undergoes nervous breakdown due to the repressive working conditions. The movie exhibits dehumanization of human being if he is pushed to the limits. Part 1 - In American author's 2009 book, The Help, the primary thesis is the relationship between Black maids and white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story is really told from three perspectives, Aibileen and Minny are Black women, both maids, and Skeeter is the nickname of Eugenia Phelan, daughter of a prominent White family. Skeeter has just finished school and hopes to become a writer. In general, the relationship between the Black maids and the White employers is six sided: On one side we have the White employers who have three views: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that can range from extreme scorn and bias to kindness regarding race; 2) Their public persona that must have the "proper" attitude about Blacks and "the help," and 3) Their employer attitude, which is condescending and parental. The Black view also has three segments: 1) Their personal and private beliefs that usually range from understanding not all Whites are the same and an extreme love and empathy for the White children for whom they care; 2) The public persona that is deferential, polite, and stoic to their White bosses; and 3) Their attitude and view among the Black community, which usually separates the "poor and ignorant but rich" White souls from the Black view of family and common sense. All in all, the relationship is contentious, phony, and based on economic advantage.

There are many different types of film and film genres. A film can fit into more than one genre, but there are some genres that are more general than others. Some examples of film genre are animated, science fiction, documentary, comedy, and historical fiction. Within each genre, there are also specific characteristics that help support themes and story lines within that genre.

Like a bud of a flower, the characters of the prodigious movie “Up” started out sheltered and not knowing what the world around them held. However, as the film progressed, the buds began to blossom, and by the end of the movie they were fully grown flora. The two main character in the Film, Carl and Russell, start out as blindsighted adventurers, foolishly jumping into a quest that was more than they could handle. As the movie concluded, they became more enlightened. These endearing characters act as role models for the younger generation. The characters of this movie show major progression from the start to end, and they set a perfect example for anyone.

"Split" is a rated PG-13 horror movie released on January 20, 2017 that was not only written, but also directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan is renowned in the entertainment business for his movies filled with a great deal of twists and turns. An example of some of the movies that he has written and directed with such a style are "The Sixth Sense" as well as "The Village". Split is no different and bares M. Night Shyamalan's signature style of suspenseful movies accompanied by many twists and turns.
